Here is a review of this player pulled directly from Circuit City's website. It seems to be from someone experiencing the same issues I was having.

Digital audio problems

Overall this seems to be a good player, but there is a troubling bug with digital audio output. No digital audio signal is output to the receiver until approx 30-60 seconds into the video playback. I am returning this player and buying a Panasonic RP56.

Video quality is standard, MP3 playback is good (no audio problems here), and the GUI setup menus are nice. But without rock solid digital audio performance on DVD's I can't keep this player. :(

Strength:

Many formats handled, smooth controls, good remote, prog.scan output, very attractive front panel for price range, smooth action on FF/RW/frame

Weakness:

Other units have dialog enhancer (not sure if that's needed or not), front panel display could tell you more.

Ok, first of all I haven't bought this yet but used it at the store and tried most of the features. Also, granted I have no DVD experience, but I am a audio snob and used to very nice equipment and I thought the way it played was perfect, and the Fwd/Back "jog" controls on the remote AND front panel ruled if you want to use that sort of thing (car wrecks, explosions, ??). Many DVD's leave off controls on panel for cost cutting but this one doesn't. Did not try MP3's but went through the menus and found them very easy to navigate and fast. After comparing on line and what not, I'm going to get one tomorrow, but for the first time in a LONG time going to get the extended warrenty, as if you've read enough of these reveiws, DVD players seem to crap out fast and the warrenty is only 3 mo P&L, 12mo Parts.

One thing that really got me intested I admit was that it looks more expensive, and amongst the cheaper players, that was great. I have terrible luck with Sony stuff, so I'm willing to take a shot with this unit. BTW, The rest of my audio system pretty solid, a 5 way power amp, a Sherwood Rec used as a Preamp, polk reference monitor speakers and center.

compare, and this new model seems to be very strong.

Can decode MP3s and HDCD
Progressive scan
Nice looking on-screen menu system

Weakness:

More on this in a later review....

I purchased this player last night, and hooked it up when I got home. I really liked the features and the on-screen menus, and thought I had done very well for what I paid. I popped in a brand new DVD movie I bought and pushed play. All looked well...until I skipped to the next chapter and *poof* the sound disappears! I looked to my trusty receiver first and all was well. I have the audio running from the DVD player directly to the receiver with an optical cable. I have had three different DVD players hooked to this receiver the same exact way without one problem so I focused my attention back to the DVD player. I played an audio CD and some MP3s without any problems with the audio. I went into the setup and made sure all digital out settings were correct and they were. I put in a DVD that I have had for a while and it did the same thing. If the power is turned off on the DVD player and then turned back on you can resume back to where the movie left off and the sound comes back. As soon as the FF, REW, Chapter or Pause are pressed the audio goes away again. I went ahead and watched the movie anyway (without skipping chapters.) While I was watching the movie it froze 6 or so times. I had to turned the power off and back on to resume where I left off. Circuit City was closed by the time I got done troubleshooting and Zenith tech support claims this is a "New model with no known problems."

I am not trying to scare anyone away from buying this player. This review is merely to document my experience with it. I will say that I like this DVD player enough to exchange it and try again, and I will submit a new review if all is well with the replacement unit.

Followup Review:

Yes, I purhased the player and have used it a few times. I have tried hooking it up at a friends house with the coaxial digital output and the optical output, both worked fine.

I have skipped around disks, stopped, started, paused, gone through the menus and table of contents, etc. Using the shuttle on the remote was cool, although if you push it too far it REALLY goes at 22x and you're far from where you started if you don't watch what you're doing.

I am not sure what problems Justin is having, the manual says that if you are FF or REW their is no sound on movies, only CD's. Mine plays in DTS, Dolby Digital, etc. I need to rent additional movies to check it out further, but nothing to gripe about yet. Just in case I have problems I did get the 12 mo warrenty on this unit, which I usually don't bother with. The number of DVD players having trouble on this site led me to question the technology involved, but so far so good. Solid performance.

Getting this today. At first I was not going to, but after seeing that Justin submitted 4 of the six reviews here, 3 of them with 1 star ratings, AND checking Circuit City's web site, I am going to get it. If it's defective, I'll take it back. But it looks like the people that got one that's not defective love it! I will post my results in a few weeks.

(Rating is to adjust for the *skew*)

POS. Picture freezes randomly for a few seconds the resumes. This thing seems to run a bit hot maybe this has to do with the problem of the picture freezing.

These two reviews are from Circuit City's website, but I feel they should also be here.

Decent but...
This is a decent player, but I also had problems with the digital audio not only on DVD's, but also on standard CD's. I have done alot of checking, and I am taking this back to the store tonight and trading up to the Sony DVP-NS700P. It is a little more expensive, but if you are looking for the best audio/video quality without spending really big $$$, this seems like the unit to get.

NO SOUND
This player is junk! I sent my sound system to get repaired only to find out that it was this dvd player! The sound going to my reciever would just shut off. I got the panasonic progressive scan for $229 and I am very happy. Don't buy this product!

Strength:

Outstanding player

Weakness:

None - every model has a few bad players in a batch - thats no reason it should get a low score here. The person with a bad mdoel just happened to review this drive 4 times.

This is just a bump score. I've had it for a week now, and no 'pause and no sound' bug.
