Strength:

good looks, good quality.

Weakness:

speakers

Okay, after using this system and trying to tweak it for over a month, I have concluded that the system, although built with great quality, is not up to par with its $1799 MSRP price. No wonder the market is flooded with refurbished versions of this unit. I must say, although powerful sub and sound quality, the sound is weak (compared to my old Panasnic SCHT80, which costs HUNDREDS less). I normally test the system with the movie "HEAT", the part towards the end when Robert Deniro and the gang was running away in downtown LA after robbing a bank. In this movie, the recording was superb, with echoes perfectly suited to test out the home theater sound. Well, I was disppointed with the JVC, when Al Paccino fired his gun, the echo sound from the gun shot was weak (once again, compared to the Panasonic SCHT80). Although this JVC does have a powerful sub, but the sound simply does not match Panasonic's which, once again, costs WAY LESS. Therefore, I'm going back to my Panasonic, anyone interested in my unit please let me know.

Strength:

Looks, Bass, Sound, Image quality and Features.

Weakness:

Music play back isn't perfect. But then again, position the speakers right and it is...

Well all in all, congrats JVC.

First off I bought this system once for myself and secondly for my friends. The system is robust and very attractive. So far I've not seen any glitches or niggles with the image, its been better then my frineds top end Sony also. The features are there, if you look and all in all the system feels complete.

The sound, you would expect to suffer being as its an all in one affair. To my suprise the acoustics were fantastic and the bass rich and kicking. I set the sub behind the sofa and the 'pods' on stands and turned the volume up for the Matrix. OH MY GOD! Get the speakers in the right positions, about head height, and you've got a top notch cinema setup.

Quite a price, but overall I don't see much wrong with it. The only gripe is getting the speakers in the right place can make a big difference... but I suppose that can be said of everything cinema setup.

Strength:

small and convienient construction. It looks good. lit remote control. right price.

Weakness:

The blue lights are WAY TOO BRIGHT.

I shopped around for a month or so for this system. I bought it refurbished and I am very gratefull for doing so. I love the tuner/dvd/amp/cd all in one piece. I'm a student and move around a lot and my components were a pain-in-the-butt to move. this makes it easier. although I do miss the bose sound quality....slightly. the jvc satisfies my needs very nicely! and I would not trade it for anything else out there.

Strength:

sound, size, 2 remote controls & the sub.

Weakness:

the bright lights, cannot read cdr/cdrw's.

Purchased this system to replace a larger unit which only had Pro-Logic. The JVC's sound is fantastic for movies. DTS and DD really work well and I should have done this along time ago. The size of the unit is neat and tiny with the sub being a great whishy table. 2 remote controls are good but can cause a mess with other remotes. Still getting use to the controls. The bright lights on the unit are just too bright but I can live with this. Also, it has heaps of inputs which I've filled but more could have been better. The ability on my unit not to play cdr/cdrw's is a bit sad but I have another unit that can do this. General music is a bit lacking it style but for home theatre it 'kicks arse'! Overall, I'm very happy with the unit and would recommend it to anyone looking for a unit that does it all.

Strength:

Sound, size, easy hook up, good on screen programming, sufficient inputs and outputs.

Weakness:

DVD player could have better features. Front panel lights too bright. Instruction manual leaves a bit to be desired.

At the price, you have to start asking whether it's a better idea to forego home theater in a box and just spend the money you want on individual components. Ultimately, I opted for this system because of its compact size and the relatively powerful sound it delivers. The sound is very crisp and there is plenty of power. The center channel speaker is great and clear. The remote is easy to use and very friendly, albeit enormous. (This problem is solved by inclusion in the box of a second, smaller remote.)

This system is very streamlined (except for the sub, which is deceptively large) and very user friendly. There are plenty of inputs for all devices and hook up is very easy. The speakers are "dedicated," in the sense that you must use the speakers that come with the system and also the cable supplied. (There may be a way to gerry-rig it to do otherwise, but I don't know how.) The on-screen programming guides and menus are primately looking but exceptionally easy to use. There are plenty of speaker options for tweaking.

I was a bit disappointed with the DVD player. Picture quality and everything is great, but I thought at the price it would come with a few more options. It also does not have component out for the DVD, just s-video and rca composite.

One gripe I have with the system is that the two blue lights on the front panel are extremely bright in a dark room. If you plan to put the unit close to your t.v., these lights will be distracting when watching movies at night. I have put some tape over them.

If you've decided that home theater in the box is the way to go, as I did for space, you really need to look hard at this system. The obvious question is whether this system is really worth nearly 3 times the price of Sony's entry-level system. I think the answer to that question is "yes, just barely," particularly if your room is decent size.

Strength:

Great picture and wonderful sound, cool design

Weakness:

Absense of component video output, reliability.

My first unit broke the day I brought it home (would not open the disk tray). However, after the next day I changed it in the store, I've had no problems with it. The picture is really good (though for that money they could put a progressive scan dvd player inside). For most dual layered DVD disks there is no noticeable pause during layer change. The sound is just great. I have no idea on how those tiny little speakers manage to produce such a big sound. DTS encoded multi channel music CDs sound wonderful. I am happy with this system.

Strength:

looks great, even on the inside

Weakness:

won't play longer than one day.

I've installed the system in the shop where i work, and when it was working the sound was good, the bass kicks en the highs are nice. The next day i wanted to view a dvd and.. the damn thing didn't go on... checked every cable and double checked everything.. so i unscrew the top en checked the inside.. the transformers from the dvd-player and the subwoofer were burned out, and that after one afternoon of playing dvd's! does have anyone had similar problems? if so.. I WILL NEVER.. I REPEAT.. NEVER BUY A JVC!

Strength:

This is a beautiful system. It was very easy to set up. It outproformed my old dolby system by leaps and bounds.

Weakness:

It broke after 15 minutes of use. Jvc told me there was a problem with my e-prom. However they are sending me a new system.

I very much enjoyed the first 15 minutes after I spent about an hour setting the system up. I was watching a DVD and decided to play around with the features, and I lost all audio. I still had viedo, but it was a little jumpy. I called JVC right away, they told me how to reset my e-prom, but to no avail. I have been told a new one is on the way. This unit will still play audio CD's, and it sounds great. I can't wait to sit and enjoy a DVD. If anyone is thinking about this system, I would still recomend it with the problem I have had. The first 15 minutes made me fall in love with this thing.

Strength:

Clear highs, great positioning, beautiful style

Weakness:

Only 1 DVD/CD at a time, TV screensaver could be better

I previously owned a monster sized system (A/V Reciever, CD Changer, Tape Deck, VCR...) Well when I began thinking of picking up a DVD player I took a hard look at my system and decided I need to completely overhaul it. It was then I saw an ad for the Sony DAV-S300, and I thought this is perfect, I can ditch the towering monster for style, compactness and DTS capability. Well for those who have heard the S300 know that it can be a little week when pumping out the wattage... that when I saw the TH-A10 sitting right next to it... I was a little skeptical of JVC but my fears were soon put to rest.

The sound from this system is great... I bought the Saving Private Ryan DVD with DTS and it just blew me away. The Picture and sound quality are fantastic, now I just wish I had a better TV with the composite RCA jacks. The TH-A10 has all the necessary controls for setting the system in an on screen dispay set-up. One thing I thought was a little hokey is the screen saver for when the player is inactive... it uses theses really crummy lookin colored bubbles and the JVC logo... I mean come on how bout doin a really kick ass aquarium or something. When playing CD's it has various DSP modes to fit your mood, most of them sound the way they should (Hall, Stadium etc...) but I tend to stick to straight up stereo for CD's.

Overall the system blows the S300 away and is great if you looking to condense your home theater system down into 1 very stylish component.
