Strength:

Looks, sound quality, easy to use

Weakness:

remote control must be used too close to the player

The S-video connection doesn't work. I took my first unit back to Circuit City and the replacement unit also doesn't work. I first tried the JVC (hated it!)so I know the connection to my H/K 500 is good. Unfortunately, the H/K 500 does not have componant video plugs. I am currently using the regular (yellow) conection and the picture is Ok, but I guess I will return this unit to Circuit City also. Anyone have a similar problem?

Strength:

Outstanding audio and video quality. Fast disk skip function. Great looking unit.

Weakness:

Random play for all 5 disc.

I recently replaced my older Sony DVP-530D single player with this 5 Disc unit from Harman Kardon. I am very impressed. The Audio from music CDs seem to be more detailed than that of the Sony unit I had. My main reason for the upgrade was to get a player that will support DTS since I recently purchased a Denon AVR-3300. I know just about all players support DTS outputs now a days but I wanted something that would make the upgrade worth while. I chose this unit for it's handsome looks coupled with what I considered to be very clean audio and video outputs. The fact that I upgraded my subwoofer from a smaller Boston Acoustic CR-400 to the mammoth, in both size and sound, M&K MX-125 MKII might have made a big difference as well. If you want a great DVD player but do not want to spend a thousand dollars or more...this is the unit to get at less than half that.

Strength:

sound, picture, construction

Weakness:

lack of hdcd decoding and lack of 6 channel analog outputs

the unit replaced a toshiba 3109 which i had a year and died from the notorious "lack of disk" syndrome. i thought the toshiba had nice sound and picture output - boy was i wrong! the hk is heads and shoulders above the toshiba. the colors are vibrant and the sound is great. add in that the hk weighs about 8-9 pounds more then the toshiba and you can see this unit is hot. the store added in an additional 36 months of warranty for the same price - so negotiate.

the down side was that the toshiba could decode hdcd and also had 6 channel analog outs. granted this is being a little picky, but my reciever doesen't have 96/24 dacs, so the lack of 6 channel analog out puts does matter a little - but not enough for me to get rid of the hk.

anyone that wants a great, not just good, dvd player should check this one out. especially since the price has dropped.

The other parts of the system are:

Yamaha RX-V995 (main room)
Various AR High Output Speakers (main room)
Yamaha Subwoofer
Technics SL1800-MK2 Turntable (still running great 18 years later)

Yamaha RX-V495 (bedroom)
NHT Speakers (bedroom)

Monster Cables for all connections
