Strength:

well, let's hope its video performance is good

Weakness:

poor CD playback

This is based on a demo at a dealer's shop.

I was looking for a DVD player with excellent CD playback and was drawn to this machine by its audiophile claims. In that respect it was a disappointment. It skipped on my CDRs and its CD sound was edgy and fatiguing. The DVD 50 was demoed with an HK receiver and good-quality floorstanders.

By contrast the Pioneer 343 was rock-solid on the same CDRs and had a much better, very musical, sound. And it's $400 cheaper.

I didn't check out the DV-50's video capacities, so my rating is based purely on CD playback.

Model year was current (2001) but Audiogon's form doesn't let me choose a year later than 2000.

Similar Products Used:

I also demoed Pioneer 343 and several other current mass-mkt Pioneer and Panasonic players
