Strength:

Ease of use. Great remote.

Weakness:

Low capacity.

Great product. Bought one as soon as they came out. Works better than I imagined. Had to change default compression level when I went from a 27" to 36" TV. Artifacts are very noticable on large screen TV's.
I love this device. My only grip is because I bought it last year I paid way to much for it. I'm trying to get TIVO to upgrade my 14 hour unit to 30 hours for little or know money. Hope they have it in them to do this. It would remove the cronic pain sensation I now have in my rear end.
DON'T BUY THE 14 HOUR UNIT IF YOUR TV IS 25" OR GREATER!!!

Locals integrated

Weakness:

doesn't support Dolby Digital set up

Hello,
I bought Philips 14 hr model, from a local store they were out of business.

I went there I never thought about the TIVO it was maket for $399 I was talking to the guy he said if you are interested I will let it go for $300.
I said I'll take for $220 if you like,I knew it the last day.
He said ok;

I hooked this TIVO up,I get synchronization problem because I was using my dolby digital Satellite receiver.
I just can watch any channels in DD.
For that I just can't stand the TIVO,the sound is more important than recording Friends of anything else.
I called the customer service,I explained my problem he said sorry TIVO doesn't support Dolby digital sound.
I sold it just the next day on Ebay got more than I paid for it.
don't give me wrong the interface is excellent ,easy to use I love the season pass ,you never miss SOPRANOS show.
It never deletes your programming unless you ask TIVO to do so.
I wish TIVO was built in Dolby Digital, but the guy I talked to he said they are coming out with new model that could be built in Optical output.
Sony is coming out with Dolby Tivo too.
For a lack of Sound I will give the TIVO 3 ****
for Easy to use ****

Strength:

once set up its easy to use

Weakness:

pixeled picture, mediocre sound, pain to set up, only 14 hours of record time

A local electonics store tht id been dealing with for years was nice enough to let me loan this unit for a week to try it out (after leaving a deposit, of course!) I personally think this product is another ploy to get people to buy things that they dont need. The only thing is that you can start watching a program before it ends, but so what? Like i couldnt wait? I got an occasional picture freeze and the sound was less than stellar. These days, you can get a decent hi-fi vcr for less than 100 bucks, and youre better off with that. paying 300 bucks to have the ability to tape only 14 hours is insane. And a monthly fee of 9.95? are you kidding? For 10 bucks, you can get a 10 or 12 pack of 6 hour vhs tapes for 60 hours, which can be re-used of course. I just dont see the point of owning this product, unless youre an absolute TV addict who cant wait to watch your shows with below average picture quality. stick with your VCR.

I recently bought a Tivo and was quite pleased with it but wasn't very happy about the lifetime fee of $249, so I returned it and got a Replay. It was $30 cheaper after the rebate and I figured if everything was the same then it would be worth it. It wasn't worth it. First of all I had to buy and RF modulator for an additional $32 which brought the price to be the same but I still had an additional 10 hours on the model I bought. Well, I have to say after comparing both models that Tivo is the winner here for the way I watch television. First of all I don't like having to look at my remote to make sure I'm pressing the right button because it's all complicated, secondly I watch a lot of different shows that are on all different times of the day. When I scheduled 2 replay channels to record the 2 shows, it never told me that they would conflict. Instead they took the show that was first asked to record as it's solution. Well, not really a solution with me!! I did not like that at all and when I tested it again I found out that if you gaurantee 2 shows that broadcast at the same time they will decide to record in alphabetical order. NOT HELPFUL. Also if 2 shows are not gauranteed and conflict it will take the show you first asked to record. Once again not very helpful in case I don't want to see that show. I also didn't like the way replay always took an additional half an hour or hour away from me whenever I gauranteed a show. That means you must check your disk space more often to make sure you don't run out which I don't want to do. You also have to pay attention how many shows you've gauranteed or non-gauranteed. I'm sorry, but the replay TV software was a lot more confusing and not very efficient. I found what really helped with my Tivo was that whenever 2 shows that I record all time (Season Passes) conflict with one another that they will ask me OK, we'll record these episodes for you, but we can't record that show here because it overlaps with this show that is a higher priority on your season pass manager (another great Tivo feature!!) and will give you the choice to go ahead, which is what I mostly do or decide to cancel that one episode to allow the other one I want to record to get recorded. A whale of a lot simplier and efficient than replay TV. So for the way I watch TV and after trying both units, I'm sticking with Tivo, I don't care about the costs, I'll pay it over Replay and I don't care about setup and the hours it may take compared to Replay. It's all been worth it and I just love it!!

Strength:

Extremely easy to use. 100 times more reliable than vcr. Pause, time shift, EVERYTHING

Weakness:

Price (it's worth it though), hard disk size
Tivo has turned me into a Law & Order Junkie

I'll post a lengthy review soon. Suffice it to say, TIVO is better than all the review you read. I can't compare to the replay TV (cause I've never used it) but TIVO does everything it claims to in a very VERY easy manner.

I never miss Drew Carey, Friends or Law & Order (or all the Law & Order repeats on A&E).

I was an early adopter and have no regrets. Sony is releasing their model in Feb '00, which has 30 hours storage for about $400 dollars. I've got a 14 hour model used at medium quality = 8.5 hours, and it's never been a real problem. More space would be nice, but this product is worth the price.

NEWS FLASH: MSRP was dropped. Tivo 14 hour is now $399 instead of $499. Expect the price to drop more this year (this will be a $199 product within 18 months - prediction).

I only wish I could give the Tivo 1 GaZillion Stars. It really is that good.

Strength:

watch what you want and when. pause and replay of live TV

Weakness:

ocasional lock up and slow remote response. TIVO's scheduling and time gets off from time to time.

It works great most of the time. watch what you want when you want to. Takes several hours to set up out of the box.
ocasional lock ups about once a month. if it acts up you um plug it and let it reboot it uasally fixes itself. 14 hour is good but not enough for two peoples interest. software needs to be worked on more.

I have the Sony SVR2000 model of TiVo. It is a fantastic product! It truly changes the way you watch TV. Now, when I come home, there is always something good to watch on TiVo. The first time you go through the Guided Setup, it will take a few hours for it to process all your channel information (especially if you have DBS) but after that, everything is a breeze. My wife was not looking forward to me bringing home another piece of equipment (and remote) for her to have to learn how to use….but she loves it. It is very easy to use. My 8 year old can easily setup a “Season Pass” to record her favorite shows whenever they come on.

If you have DBS and a coax antenna – no problem…TiVo let’s you route everything through ONE output to your TV!! No more switching inputs to watch local channels!! Every channel is combined in the guide too. Don’t have time to watch what you’ve recorded on TiVo, or want to save a great movie for a long time?? Simply Press “Copy to VCR” and you will have a VHS tape of whatever you’ve recorded.

Will you watch more TV?? Probably a little more.. The main thing is you WILL be watching better TV….the things YOU like, when you want. I love this thing! Of all the home theater gear I have bought, it is the most useful and makes the most difference in my home theater. Buy it now, TiVo is offering a $100.00 rebate. Sign up for Lifetime Subscription – and you will never have any monthly fees. It will be the best money you have spent to improve your TV viewing life.
