    Strength:

Terrific user interface! Incredibly intuitive and easy to use.

    Weakness:

"Thumbs down" button on the remote is too close to the play button.

Like others have said, Tivo has completely changed the way I watch TV. My wife and I both swear by it. The interface is great, and very, very flexible. If you haven't tried one, you have no idea how much you're missing!

    Strength:

Easy to use and after using the TiVo for a while its hard to imagine TV without it.

    Weakness:

Bad customer service when dealing with ANY problem.
Expensive to fix when something goes wrong, even within the warranted time.

I bought a Sony 2000 TiVo in December 2000. Up until this week I loved my TiVo. I had only a few minor gliches with slow responces and one incorrect recording, but overall I felt the TiVo was well worth the money. That was until Monday when my TiVo desplayed a severe error message and refused to work. I did everything the technicians said but was forced to call Sony and report my problem. During that call I learned that my hard drive was broken and to get it fixed I would have to pay $160to ship it to Boston for some one to fix my TiVo. The service man also said that this had been happening to a lot of customers after receiving a software update. Before I was willing to give the money over I looked up everything I could on-line as to what I could do. What I learned is scary. Not only are the hard drives breaking down without warning, but 1 in 34 hard drives die within the first year of use and TiVo admitts this fact. They also have admitted that the problem with the hard drives is not due to the software update, but the software update exposes the defective hard drives. In other words, this is a manufacture's defect and TiVo refuses to pay to the replacement of these drives. TiVo merely states that defects will always happen and they can't do anything.

Only had a brief session with a replayTV. It seemed to be slower than TiVo, but I only used it for a weekend.

    Strength:

Ease of use. Good quality & support. Lots of cool features. 14 day program guide.

    Weakness:

30 hour mode looks like crap on a good TV. Only 4 storage settings. Must subscribe to Tivo for guide info.

Had this box for almost a year now & I don't know what I'd do without it. I recommend using this product with a S-VHS VCR to get the best results. I have a DirecTV reciever going into the Tivo, then through the VCR & into the TV. I'm using a Sony 36" XBR HDTV set, so good S-VHS cables are a must. Wish list for this product would include the ability to record HDTV signals, expandable storeage options (use the high quality setting only for sports, about 9 hours total storage, otherwise the pixilization gets hard to take). Very easy to move keeper programs from the Tivo to a VCR. Overall a very nice product.

    Strength:

TiVo will change your life. You need never waste time watching live TV again. There's always something better to watch in the recordings.

    Weakness:

The Philips remote is a little nicer (personal opinion) and, for multiple TiVos in the same room, the Philips is a better choice.

Previous reviewer commented about TiVo service. It should be understood that TiVo neither sells nor services the hardware. That is the responsibility of the box manufacturer (Sony, Philips, etc.). TiVo sells the box design to manufacturers and TiVo provides the software and programming schedules to the end user.
