I recently purchased a new house and wanted to upgrade all my home theater equipment. I ended up buying this piece from Computability NEW for $340 delivered! Set it up and WOW what an improvement over my older JVC. Crystal clear picture and audio. Editing features are nice also. Well Done!!

REMOTE

I am in the process of putting together a new HT system, so I wanted a VCR with good picture quailty. This unit does that, it will satisfy me until I get my Denon DVD 2500. I got mine from OneCall for $337.00 delivered. The remote is horrible so I will be purchasing the Marantz.

Strength:

SVHS-ET, Feauture packed, looks

Weakness:

Clumsy programmed record

I got the machine for $343 shipped from BuyItNow.

I took it out of the box and recorded broadcast TV with an old beat-up TDK tape using the SVHS-ET mode. When I compared the tape vs. broadcast I couldn't tell the difference. The picture quality is superb.

The neg. is when I manually programmed to record by timer, it seems that you can't directly punch in the date, time and channel using the remote's numeric buttons. Rather, you have to tediously scroll using the + and - keys. I haven't read the owner manual carefully to confirm this. Maybe there's an easier way. You can always use VCR+ if you have that available.

Overall, this is a lot of machine for the money. I didn't feel the additional 2MB of memory, and ghost canceling justified the additional $100+ for the 9600 model. Although the champagne finish would be nice to have on the 7600.

Strength:

SVHS-ET, video enhancement/stabilization circuitry, hi-fi sound.

Weakness:

record function, side panels.

I bought this used for $210 Canadian. I was getting a big screen tv and wanted an S-Vhs vcr to show off the quality of the picture. I have not been disappointed. I think the image quality of an S-VHS recording is fantastic...my somewhat untrained eye can't really tell the difference between regular SVHS and SVHS-et. The video stabilization really works well, I'm very impressed by it. I did think the recording process is a little bit convoluted and could be a little more streamlined, but once you get used to it I guess it isn't all that bad. This is a very good quality vcr... so I'm not sure who decided to cheapen the look of it by gluing on a pair of plastic "rosewood" side panels... maybe they lost their job?. Recording from DVD to SVHS-et does not result in a big loss of clarity or sharpness, I was very impressed by this too. I got it at a great price used and it's still under warranty .... but to be fair, I found out the price on a new one here in order to give it a fair "value" rating... in my opinion the new Sharp machines offer better value. I agree with the people who have complained about a noisy rewind mechanism ... but to tell you the truth I am unimpressed by all rewind mechanisms now that I'm used to just hitting eject on a DVD player! Who would I recommend this to... anyone who wants a high quality SVHS-et machine and also has a lot of older videotapes in various degrees of decay... this machine does make them look better.

Strength:

All around..

Weakness:

SVHS-ET does not work in EP mode, at least in models sold in Hong Kong.

Does the 7600 (or 5600 for that matter) support recording in SVHS ET in EP or LP mode in other regions? The posts seems to indicate yes, but the manual for the models sold here in Hong Kong clearly indicate that only SP mode supports SVHS ET...

The Philips 999 I already own has the same problem, which lead me to find one that CAN record SVHS ET in EP mode (& allow me to record 3 dvds per tape instead of 1).

Any ideas? I can't find the Sharp model here.. if I bring one from the US or Canada, the voltage is different and they don't support Nicam, or various systems here like Pal etc..

Extremely irritating, pls comment if you can shed any light on this.. thanks,
