Strength:

Solid tuner, excellent playback and recording

Weakness:

small chassis, not SVHS

Unless you demand S-VHS or other super high quality VCR, there is no reason to buy more than this unit. For everyday use, it has all the conveniences and good enough quality to act as a bridge to DVHS or other digital recording format.

For those of you seeking a simple replacement VCR (as I was), this is it. I saved the money I could have spent to buy good quality cables and with the leftover, save for the next generation.

I purchased this VCR from Sears for about $150 and I must say it was worth every penny! I found no faults with this player and recommend it to everyone. If your looking for a low cost, great performing, great looking VCR look no further than the SLV-678HF!

Weakness:

small unit

Bought this unit one week ago from best buy for 150.00, when I played a tape, I noticed a bright line on top of the TV screen that I couldn't get rid of. The chassis is very small compared to other VCR, although it had a nice picture quality and a very good HI-FI sound, I had to replaced it with the panasonic PV-9451 that cost me only 139.00 and has more features and a nicer design.

Strength:

Easy to use, nice picture, and great stereo sound.

Weakness:

Remote needs some work. Isn't compatible with my TV and the channel changer doesn't allow you to flip between two favorite channels.

Overall, this was a great buy. I paid $150 for it at Best Buy and it is a huge improvement from my 4-Head, Mono machine that it is replacing.
It is hooked to my Stereo TV and Receiver and what a difference it has made in my movie watching as well as recording concerts, etc. A nice price for a good performing Hi-Fi VCR.

Strength:

Great picture quality, great price

Weakness:

The loudest VCR I've ever heard. We bought one, took it back that night after trying it home, and the second, and third, and fourth were just as noisy. The Sony tech-line verified this is just a characteristic of this model. Had to do with the motor inside.

Even with the noisy motor inside, this is still a great buy. If you have an audio or TV stand with a glass door, the stand muffles 99% of the noisy motor, and the volume overpowers the rest, otherwise, you need volume to drown out that darn buzzing noise, might be a problem for people with apartments at night.
I've always been a fan of Trilogic technology, and the picture and sound quality obtained with even cheap connectors is great. So good, that it rivals Sony's much more expensive models, which use the same hardware.
For your money...5
Overall...4 (because it's a little noisy)

Strength:

Clear picture recording on Digital Cable. Easy setup. Slef cleaning heads. Overall features are good.

Weakness:

No LP. Slow Rewind/fast forward. Little noisy. No front hookups.

I bought this at Circuit City for $100 (open box, so far it's working well. I am one of the few who like to operate equipment without reading the manual, so far I could set record timing etc, but not VCR+. Under $150 budget this is a good buy, the 779 model is better.
