I bought my radio on onsale for $270 which has to give it at leaset a four. if you paid more that $350 that you might want to consider bringing it back and looking on onsale. the only thing i would add to it is a subwoofer. I will soon be getting a 250 watt powered subwoofer which i hear will fix my problem.

I bought this system last August for 599.99. I hooked up up to my computer which I have a tv tuner and a DVD player on. The DVD movies came through
very well and having the 5.1 hook-up is what sold me on this unit. The
sound was very good for both the TV and the DVD. My one problem just arose,
and that was the display totally went out on me. I took it back to Best
Buy and they offered me the new Aiwa NSX-MTD9(499.99) which is 410 watts and a
little different design. I will have to write my review on that system soon.
For watching movies on my computer in my bedroom on my computer - this
unit performs very well. I got what I expected from the sound, I like the
5.1 and dolby offerings, MD option was good for me too, and 5-disc is a
nice option - for all of that I give it five stars. Because my display
broke and that was a pain - it loses a star.

I Picked Up The NSX-MT960 For $325 bucks At An Internet Store,Before I GotIt I had The Aiwa NSX-V21. the NSX-V21 was only 15 x 2 watts Per channel
but It had decent bass and Over All sound For its size Plus It was a Reliable
system. When I Got the NSX-MT960 I Was expecting tons More bass Plus better
sound but I was Let down by the poor Sound preformance of the System.
The System is Nice,I had no problems with it. The System Is the Only Thing
there is To like With Its Big 145 x 145 Amp. Im am going To upgrade The System
with a Pair Of infinity RS-4s And US-1 Rear Surround

Strength:

Good form factor for my application. Great power output for the size unit at the time I bought it. Bought it new and worked great for approximately two years.

Weakness:

Display was repalced and the unit worked fine, then display driver chip went out. Chip is molded into front board and basically was not worth repairing.

Unit was great at first but not designed or built to last more that a couple of years.

The Aiwa NSX-MT960…

Well, most of the reviews on this page are pretty thin and don’t tell you much of anything about the stereo. I hope this review will change that a bit. First a little info on me, so you can give what weight you wish to my review. I’m a college student at UW-Madison. I have been a guitar player for 5 years and involved in music for 8. I have spent a lot of time dealing with car stereos and the like. I have learned to have a distinguishing ear. I am NOT an audiophile, but I am far from a casual listener, and have a relatively strong technical background.
My hopes weren’t very high for this system after having read the reviews on this page. I purchased my system through Onsale as a refurb. I don’t recommend this route to too many people, you run the risk of a severely damaged system. So, what did I see coming out of the box. My system had a mild crack in the top CD view panel, no big deal. I can replace that on my own. The next thing I checked out was the size of the main speakers. After taking off the cover, I discovered that the system contains disappointingly small 6” drivers. I had little concern as to the center and rears, considering their main purpose is for filling in sound for movies and the like which they do exceptionally well, especially in recreating 3d environments in computer games. After I set up the system, the first thing I did was run through the tracks from the BASS Mekanik CD. This CD does an excellent job of giving you a good idea of the capabilities of the system. It runs through various sine wave sets and smooth transitions through all the frequencies. The speakers on this system did not respond fully until about 85hz. This greatly affects the type of sound that you get from the system when playing music, as I will touch on in a bit. The other thing I immediately noticed is that there is a great deal of air turbulence emanating from the ports. This can be eliminated to some degree by stuffing your hands in the ports. However, this is not a solution! Only a test! If you stuff the ports you change the frequency that the speakers create because of the fact that the ports are tuned and you run the risk of frying your voice coil eventually from the extra back pressure on the speakers. The system responds rather smoothly throughout the frequencies from then on. A significant drop in volume can be heard where the frequency falls off from the bass boost. So what do we know so far? Small drivers… not that impressive, frequency response ok, but limited to mid bass and up.
The next aspect I looked at on this system was the various features it included. The system is chock full of goodies, some worthless but interesting and others outstanding additions. The T-bass and BBE are definite plusses and work well if you want to manipulate your sound in that manner. The 8 band equalizer is also helpful for catering to your own individual listening preferences. There are even included “rhythm sets” in the stereo. They vary from Samba to Waltz. Kind of worthless as well as cheesy sounding, but some people may find them amusing or even useful. The Dolby on the system does indeed shine. I have this system hooked up to my computer for movies and games and the experience is phenomenal. The four point sound does an excellent job of simulating real ambiences. Very impressive. There are tons of features all over the system. More than I care to discuss, and what is there ranges in quality from fairly good to above average.
Now the big deal to all of the people who are buying this as a music system and not as a theatre system. How does it sound playing music? The overall sound is fairly decent. The lack of deep bass detracts from the quality of the experience. However, the highs and mids are quite crisp and no distortion is evident until around 38-42 on the volume. Then distortion begins to take hold, but if the bass is taken down the sound cleans up again. The system is moderately loud. Sound more like about 80 or 90 watts rather than 148, but keep in mind, you have to double your wattage to get a 1db increase. So this system isn’t going to be all that much louder than any of your 75 watt systems. Out of curiosity, I decided to hook the main unit up to a nice set of KLH floor speakers. These speakers contain a 12 inch woofer, 12 inch passive, 4 inch midrange and 2-1/4” titanium tweeter. The sound that came out was far from what I expected. The system sounded as good as the 400 dollar Sony receiver that had been hooked up to those speakers. The walls and the floors shook and the mouse pointer on the computer screen waltzed all over from the vibrations. The volumes that could be reached were also slightly better. The only limitation with this is the main unit is usually pushing into 6 ohm speakers so there is a slight power loss when you go to an 8 ohm speaker like this. So, what is the verdict on the system for music? Not a bad system. With its factory speakers it does fairly well, plenty good for a casual listener, acceptable for the enthusiast and probably less than desirable for the true audiophile. The lack of low bass detracts from the overall performance of the unit. However, it can be easily fixed by replacing the speakers. Considering I got my unit for 200 dollars, put it in this perspective. I have a main unit with built in receiver, Dolby pro logic, Dolby Digital ready, 5 disc changer, AM/FM receiver, EQ, and tons of other goodies. So it may be more than worthwhile to buy this system with the sole intention of using it as a receiver unit with different speakers. A decent subwoofer would also make this system really shine (it has two sub outputs to boot).
So what does this all mean? This system isn’t bad. 400 dollars would probably be the uppermost limit I would pay for this system. Sticking to 300 dollars is VERY reasonable and 200 is dirt cheap. It doesn’t sound all that bad, it sounds quite phenomenal for movies and such applications, as a loud music system you will be disappointed. It is plenty loud, I can’t shout over it if I turn it up, that should be satisfactory for most people! The only concern I have with the system is going to be reliability. I am concerned as to whether or not the display will hang in there. As is attested to in various reviews on this page, that may be a problem in the future. I would recommend this system to most people. It has its drawbacks, but if you can get for a decent price or have good speakers available to it, go for it! I hope this has been informative and answered any question you have.
4 stars for value... leaning toward 5 with getting it for 200.
4 stars overall, not a bad system, just needs better speakers or a sub.

If you are an audio enthusiast this is not the best system in the world, but if you are a casual listener that is on a budget and needs a descent system this is most likely the " best bang for your buck. " I chose this mini system for two main reasons. High power with 145 watts of front speaker power, and for the 5.1 dvd input. I later bought a powered subwoofer with this system and I must admit it sounds damn nice. For the price I paid this is the best system I have ever had. I paid $280 at best buy for this, because it was a returned product. I got it home and the box was never even opened. So for the price this mini system is great. If the price is more than $400 you should consider putting together your own system. For what I paid this system was a good solid 5 stars.

I just purchased the AIWA NSX-MT960B from ONSALE FOR $289 (NEW). This stereo is a pretty good system for your bedroom or for small parties. DON'T intend to brink down the neighborhood because it doesn't have that much power. The DOLBY PRO LOGIC is awesome for DVD players. I would recommend this stereo for those who just want something to play around with. If you want serious stereo equipment then buy a reciever with some serious speakers. Also I recommend the Powered sub woofer (it really makes a difference). NO OFFENSE but this system is not worth $500 so don't be a sucker and go to SEARS or NOBODY BEATS THE WIZ. These units can be found BRAND NEW for half that price.FOR THE PRICE OF WHAT I PAID FOR I HAVE TO GIVE THIS UNIT A 5.

Overall I give this system a rating of 2. This is besacues the display went blank on the first unit I originally purchased after 6 months of use. The replacement unit that Best Buy swapped for me lasted 6 months before that display went blank. Since the 960 model was replaced by the NSX-DS11 Best Buy replaced my whole NSX-MT960 system for the newer NSX-DS11. The first thing that I noticed was that the NSX-DS11 display does not stay on all the time like the NSX-MT960. On the newer model the user must press a clock button to display the time (time will appear for 4 seconds before the display shuts down). In my opinion (and from reading other reviews) Awia has problems with display reliability. Instead of fixing the problem they band-aided it by extening the display life by not turning it on as long. After 2 weeks with the newer NSX-DS11 the right amplifier channel has distortion at normal listening levels. The reliability of this system is horrible and I would expect that something would go wrong with the system in the first 2 years if not the first year.
