my personel mini reference system.located across from my easy chair in the corner of my moderate sized living room in a nearfield listening position and table top mounted the sound that the system produced was impressive! clear, natural and even somewhat detailed sounding with killer looks features like 3 grill cover choices,2 system lighting choices,2 remotes,an array of input/output including digital and subwoofer out.as well as loudness control I made use of the subwoofer output with another excellent product Yamaha YST SW-45 powered sub,(musical, detailed and tight) IF YOU KEEP IN MIND! what these products are designed for and your able to work within there limits you will not be disappointed! Can't be beat value for the dollar!

Strength:

excellent design, sound and features

Weakness:

none (for indended use)

This is the best looking and sounding system I've seen so far for the money. Thank you Nakamichi engineers and industrial designers! I don't hear any ticking sound as mentioned in previous post (mine was manufactured March 2000) and since this is not a 'boom' box, I did not expect to make my ears bleed when listing to music at high volume. And I've tried quite a few CD's with lots of bass and I did not hear any distortion with loudness on and the bass to the max.

Overall excellent product...

Terrible Sound, worse than some of $300 system

This system sound sucks, all from low to high range.
How could nakamichi build such terrible system.
Compared to mcr-e100 it's like honda accord compared to Mercedes S-Class.

Strength:

Great Looks, good price, and good sound apart from a clicking noise.

Weakness:

Under-powered and it had a stupid fault

I purchased the Sound Space 5, mainly because it was in my price range, it sounded great and I loved the look of it. I did look at the Sound Space 8 but decided that I could always add a Sub Woofer at a later date.

I got it home, set it up and listen to it. Athough the sound was very crisp and clean, the unit seemed to be under-powered. The room I wanted it to fill was not very big, but I needed to crank it well over half way just to get it to a half decent level. I put it on sleep mode and went to bed, listening to it at a low level. That’s when I noticed a clicking noise. It was very faint but it occurred every time the CD counter display advanced a further second. Also when you changed volume levels you could here it clicking when the numbers on the display changed. I can only guess that there was some electronic interference between the display and the pre-amp. At first I thought that it did not matter as it was so quiet, but after about 2 days it started to drive me mad, because that’s all I could hear. It really spoilt the enjoyment of the music.

I took it back to the store and they swapped it for another, without even listening to it. I got this unit home, set it up and it did exactly the same thing, so I took it back again. This time the store had to order one from suppliers. When I received a call from the store to tell me the third unit had arrived and he has set it up and could hear no clicking. I asked him to leave it set up and I will listen to it when I got to the store. Sure enough when I got to the store and listened to the third unit, you could hear the clicking. The guy at the store listened more closely than before and agreed he could hear it too, and decided it must be a design fault. I am not 100% sure it is a design fault because it maybe something to do with dirty electricity, but we did try 3 units a 2 different sites!?!?!?!?

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has heard the clicking noise.

So my advice is don’t bother with the SS5, it may look great but it is way under powered and has an amazingly stupid fault. The Sound Space 8 it so much better.

Strength:

Clean, precise sound, flexible design, visual impact

Weakness:

No track memory in random play???

I bought the SS5 after torturing myself for months over sound systems for my living/dining room area. It has exceeded my expectations in most areas!

The sound this unit produces is crisp, clean and precise, although there is distortion evident when the "loudness" function is engaged at low volume (solution - don't use the loudness function!!) It performs exactly as I'd hoped for for everything from background music, to "active" auditions of CD's at higher listening levels (loud enough to warrant complaints by the neighbours!). I've never really tried blowing the doors off with it, so I can't comment on its performance at ear-bleeding volumes.

The "gee whiz" factor of this unit is very high as well; EVERYONE who has seen it has commented on its pleasingly high-tech appearance.

By the way, it has sounded even better (clearer separation and more defined soundstage) since I took the unit off a table-top and wall-mounted the three components in a slightly higher location.

the only quibble - on "random play" of three CD's, the thing seemed to repeat tracks, rather than playing every cut just once until all had been played. I found this to be slightly annoying, and have actually stopped using the random function since I noticed this.

Strength:

sharp appearance, quality sound. an all-around winner.

This is a fantastic mini-system. Fantastic looks (everyone who sees it remarks on the impressive presentation of the system), great sound, and full of features.

What else do you want in a mini-system? Mini-systems aren't designed to wake the neighboors and send them running. This system fills the room with crisp, natural, quality sound, and looks great, both mounted on the wall or on a tabletop.

Strength:

great sounding

Weakness:

hear the same clicking as simon richards in earlier post

great sound from a small unit could use a little more power
thbut pretty good for the bedroom. to get a decent level of sound you almost have to turn it all the way up. mines in the shop right now to try to fix that annoying ticking sound that is synchronized with the cd timer. shall update later when it gets back been almost a month but to their credit they moved to a new location is why its taking so long.

Strength:

Looks great on the wall, three CD changer in small package nice feature, just enough power for what it's used for.

Weakness:

Hard to hide the cables for the main unit when wall mounting.

I was trying to convince myself that B&O was the only way to go in my living room until I saw the Nakamichi. I liked the way it looked, and the sound was excellent for what it was.

Now hung on the wall in my house, (a real task to hide those wires in the wall for a really clean look, but worth it) the system provides background music and has a look that should remain fresh for many years to come.

Not a system for critical listening, but it was never meant to be. It does exactly what it's supposed to do, and does it very well. FM reception even with the dinky included dipole is better than I expected. A sub will improve things, but where to put it? One of the only systems I have ever purchased that made me think about how it LOOKS as much as how it sounds. A great value when compared to B&O.

Strength:

Clear, crisp sound compared to others in category. great looks.

Weakness:

Slightly underpowered w/o subwoofer

Overall, i'm very pleased with the purchase. I have a small condo, and with the subwoofer I added (Phase Technology Power8), it fills the room nicely. I did notice some distortion when the loundess function was used, but I find that I don't need to use that function after I added the sub. The biggest problem was interference that I experienced with the tuner. I live in downtown Seattle near some radio towers, so this problem may be a result of my specific location. After some tweaking and creative antenna placement, I was able to get rid of the hum. If you want to fill a small space with clear, precise sound, I would highly recommend this unit.
