Philips MZ 33 Mini Systems

Philips MZ 33 Mini Systems

DESCRIPTION

- Incredible surround dramatically expands the soundfield to envelop you in your music with only a two-speaker system or with headphones. Incredible surround widens the soundstage and adds the depth of concert halls, clubs, and stadiums for a more exciting listening experience.

- Digital sound control provides preset sound settings to enhance various types of music based on personal preference. Settings include optimal, jazz, classic, and rock.

- Three-way speaker operation features a 3-way crossover network, circuitry that sends the low frequencies to the woofer, mid-frequencies to the midrange, and the high frequencies to the tweeter. This more accurately reproduces the full spectrum of sound, with individual drivers (woofers, midranges, and tweeters) dedicated to specific frequency reproduction.

Strength:

Excellent sound quality, great design, compact size, great value for the price

Weakness:

Mediocre quality speaker cable supplied with the unit, no subwoofer line-out

I bought this unit based on the review by a local audio magazine, which was very very positive. So I was really curious to prove whether it's true or not. The first thing that I observed was the design and material. The brown coloured speaker box was made by wood and used a 3-way design; a 5" woofer for low-frequency, 1" and 3/4" silk dome tweeter for mid and high frequency, respectively. It's unusual using a dome (not a cone driver) for midrange, but this could be one main reason for the high quality sound delivered by this unit. The silver coloured main unit looks attractive with its shape and an elegant green LCD. I installed the unit exactly like a high-end system arrangement and I also replaced the supplied speaker cables with Sonic Link AST200 speaker cables. On sound quality test, I found that the sound was really surprising, with balanced portions between high, mid, and low. The staging was centered exactly between two speakers. The bass was tight and accurate, although not too low. The only weakness of this unit is that it doesn't provide a subwoofer line-out to get lower bass reproduction using an external subwoofer. Bottom line, this unit is fantastic. You can't beat this one with anything (no matter the price) in the shelf systems range. I compared this unit with others (including the more expensive ones). Honestly, I think the quality of its sound is quite close to those 'hi-end' gears. I truly recommend this unit to anyone who desires a great sound with an affordable price.
