Wow, I feel like I stole this thing for $250. Really good sound quality: excellent high's, very good bass (not super power, but hey you need a sub for that anyway), pretty decent mid-range. If I had to nitpick I would say that the midrange is not quite as good as the high's and low's (but still quite listenable) and the sound could use a little more separation. And the unit is a little too big to be a true micro-system. These are all minor quibbles. I haven't heard anything within $200 of the price that even comes close. Very happy camper.
The cmt-cp11 replaces the cp1 with slightly higher wattage and treble and bass controls. You could probably get it for about $230 if you look around.

this one is a beauty. i found all the features i needed in a small desktop system. this is an excellent buy for the money and for desktop use.

sheilded speakers would be an improvement, because it can then replace your computer speakers.

This is a fantastic little machine. I've had my CP11 for just over a year now and have been entirely satisfied. There's been criticism on these pages of the lack of tonal control. I understand that the CP1 has nothing more than the DSG on/off option. That would be a MAJOR downside. However, the CP11s dead simple Bass & Treble controls offer enough contol to get the sound you want. On most recordings the DSG on and the Bass & Treble turned right down gives a lovely, balanced sound. The mid range is always going to lack a bit of detail at this price, but that's being pedantic.
Of all the stuff I listen to, it's only some of the techno/house that doesn't sound so great. Anything else, from Miles Davis and Ella through to Crazy Horse and Led Zep, this sounds great.
I play mine through some Kef Cresta 1s which are superb, but that's another story. The supplied speakers are decent enough though -and they look great with the covers off.

I bought this system because of very good reviews, the sales personel of more than one shop recommended it to me and it got some awards. I was very dissapointed with the sound: too much low frequencies (bass), too much high frequencies and nothing in between. I didn't like it and excange it. Good only if it the very strong bass is most important.

Great looking system, small and it fits my bookshelf. I can also watch vcds with it.

It has a unique LCD which displays the time and tuner.

Sound quality cannot be adjust. It sound too sharp on my certain cds and a little blur if DSP is not on.

Speaker cables are permanetly attach to the speakers.

Only for midnite pleasure.

I have been using my JVC UX5000 for almost a year now and intends to change for a new micro system. I was at the shopping mall and this system ( Sony ) cought my eyes. I wanted a micro hifi system that also plays VCDS.

The outlook of this system is very nice, gold console and the the speakers look good too. It has a unique LCD which displays the clock and tuner. I decided to buy this set.

First I let the system to run in- for the first 2 days. I tested it on the 3rd day. I listen to Robert Miles's cd. At times it cannot cope up with it's bass if the music is too loud. I have to switch off the DSP mode in order to listen to a louder volumn and this I would sacrifies the tone.

Overall this system sounds is more clearer when comparing with JVC UX500 but as for the bass, I would prefer my JVC UX5000.

DSG setting overblown

Normally I would not even have looked at a micro system, espescially for music. My sister's friend had bought one, and I was genuinely susprised by the sound.
The Sony was bought on the basis of 1. A simple/cheap home cinema set up. and 2.For back ground music/radio in the lounge ( I have a separate listening room and setup).
After hooking the unit up to the TV/VCR I was very surprised at the respectable quality of the sound.
Considering the price (£155) the presentation is very acceptable. 5 stars for sound at the price! The overall presentation is a bit flat, and lacking in dynamics (especially at lower volume levels. i suspect the loudspeakers here), but all of the fundamentals are there. ie: A reasonable impression of the musicality/ambience of the piece, decent timing and rhythmn etc (imaging I have no idea on, as I am deaf in the right ear). Shame the speaker wires are captive to the speaker, though I suspect I may change the speakers for some better models in the future. One thing I do not like is the DSG setting. Why put such an overblown 'tone' switch on a potential bargain at the price. It ruins any pretentions to hi-fi sound, and drags it back to ghettoblaster territory! It is too unsubtle
The only other thing which I believe to be a mistake is that to select vcr/md, you have to get up to the unit, it is not switchable from the remote!? This is a glaring omission on the usability front.
Recommended for the kids bedroom, or as I use it as a simple home cinema set up. I don't think the true audiophile would go anywhere near this, as it is a mini/micro system, which is a shame, or maybe not? It all depends on how much you value the perceived price/ performance ratio
Overall though the Sony has been a pleasant surprise at the cost, and good value for money.

The unit I got is CP11(not the older CP1)Wires are thin, attached to the speaker, cannot be changed. The system is of high quality construction. However, bass is pretty much lacking compared to my Cambridge FPS2000 PC system. The panasonic SCPM22 microsystem is a better choice if you want more bass, it costs less too!

again, though the bass is good, the overall sound is disbalanced, LCD display is awful, the recording quality to the tape is poor, the mechanic sound of engaging the tape mechanism is annoying

I was impressed with the deep bass of the system first, but it looks like with DSG (sort of a bass boost) on, the system cranks out bass and high tones, leaving every other tone behind. This leads to an imbalance, some tapes are hard to listen to with a DSG on. Well, you switch it off and the reason why you bought it disappears. Lack of control of bass gets disappointing after a while. I think now Sony offers only CMT-CP11 which has bass and high tones controls.

The LCD leaves much to be desired. Virtually indiscernible when the tape plays, it only helps when you switch on radio or listen to CDs. Here again, you will not be able to see anything unless you are standing close to it.

The second most disappointing thing for me after fixed bass and high tones was the giant clunking sound each time the tape operation is engaged. Sounds like a whole mechanism gets engaged, which can be heard all over the apartment. Gets very annoying after a while.

Another thing about the tape deck is unpleasant too. Each time you put in a new tape you are never sure from which side it is going to start playing it (since it remembers the setting from the previous tape). So if you finished listening to your last tape on side B and you insert another tape, you will get side B again.

Resume: a good system for a college student, audio neophyte, stylish, good sound for the price, but if you are looking for a more serios stereo upgrade - leave it behind!
