I picked up the Sony HT-DW800 for $399 at Service Merchandise. The unit comes with the Sony STR-DE425 Receiver that has Dolby Pro Logic and is DD 5.1 channelready (Thus, using the Sony DVP-530D or DVP-550D will give you Dolby Digital).

I have had no problems with the receiver however the speaker package is not quite up to par. The system comes with the Sony SA-VE130 Speaker system which consists of 4 mag. shielded speakers, a center channel speaker, and a SA-W303 60 watt powered subwoofer. The front left and right speakers as well as the surround speakers are not full range speakers. They are only 90-20,000 Hz, with the subwoofer picking up the rest. Thus, I feel that when I hook up a DVD player with Dolby Digital processing on board, most of the bass from all of the speakers will have to be routed to the sub. Thus, the subwoofer will be quite busy during intense scenes.

The amp is rated 100 X 2 full bandwith. In the surround mode you get 100 X 3 at 1000 Hz, with 50 X 2 for the rear.

Sound Quality:

In stereo mode, the system sound very good with nice crisp highs and good bottom, once you get the subwoofer adjusted correctly. In Pro Logic mode, the front channels are quite loud, with the center channel sounding very boxy and dull. The rear channels could be louder but you can adjust them on the amp.

One MAJOR complaint is that when you select the DVD/5.1 on the receiver you loose control of the bass and treble controls...thus, lets hope that the DVP-530D or the DVP-550D have speaker controls that will allow you to set up your speakers properly. Also, Sony could have provided a better subwoofer since the woofer is only 6.5 inches and it struggles with some loud explosions.

Overall, this is a good system. I would not recommend this system to Audiophiles however. This is an affordable system for those who are just getting into surround sound and are a casual listener.
