Strength:

clean smooth sounds for the price of dirt. the BEST SOUND for the money around and it is not a refurb. Feels, looks, sounds highquality. my 'big' system doesn't sound this good at these lower sound volumes. Great rear inputs and terminals.

Weakness:

flimsy CD trays/ gears. need to ramp up the volume before you hear anything.Simularted wood looks cheesy.

Okay, I don't own a house to deserve a pricey system, but live in a dorm room size bedroom. I wanted a mini/micro system for its size and decent performance. The Teac MCD95 (similar model) fits the bill pretty close, but due to the price, it is a bargain and hits the target with a bullseye. First off, in terms of the best micro system, the Yamaha 150 sounds best to my ears. No, it may not have the flattest response, but sounds the best by a noticeable amount, having the best and biggest soundstage- I can hear where everyone is standing and where the instruments are located. Denon equivalent sounds flatter, but can't pump out lively music like the Yamaha and the soundstage is not as defined. But these all cost at least 2x as much as the Teac MCD95 (same as Teac REF130). Sure the CD mechanism is noisy and slow to respond and the radio reception is only average, but the sound is incredibly smooth and clean. THe soundstage is about 1/2 the size of the Yamaha and defnitely not as defined- giving me lots of room for getting a better system when my wallet grows. Vocals are clear and pleasing, but vocal detail is not as crispy as the Yamaha. Rapid transitions sound clean, but is slower than the Yamaha. The Yamaha is not as quick with Techno as other systems, but still sounds pleasant. In this way, the Teac system is similar to the Yamaha- easy to listen to for long periods. Whatever the wattage, the Teac needs to really ramp up the volume to high medium before the music comes alive-smooth and clean. The speakers cannot make your room thump. They are high quality and heavy for their size- good speaker baffle. The component part is also heavy, not like Sony systems. Try the Teac- I did whilest listening to the Yamaha MCR-E150 and couldn't resist the great value of the Teac. ALso, I don't mind that I will not worry as much leaving my room door open. Still great sound while minding my budget.
