Strength:
Sound quality, ease of use (except for the tuner & alarm), good looks, high-tech CD player
Weakness:
Alarm and Tuner are almost impossible to use. Bass is a little weak The GX-70 is perfect for those short on space. I bought mine nearly 3 years ago yet I am still happy with it. Why? Because it has aged gracefully, out-sounding most of the newer systems released by Aiwa/Sony/JVC/Onkyo/Denon. When I bought it, the system was brand new and price was high. I have to say that I've gotten my money's worth, though. The front channels are clearly in a class of their own. I've heard people say that yamaha systems are better for home theater than for music...if that indeed is the case, the GX-70 is a HUGE exception. Its ability to play music is unparalleled. The small surround and center speakers are average within this class. At least they look nice. ;-) Similar Products Used: Denon systems, Aiwa systems, Sony, Onkyo, etc. I really did try them all. |

I bought this system about a month ago after comparing it to theaiwa units. I purchased the system from the "Good Guys" for $335. |

I bought the GX-70 as a second home theater about 3 weeks ago from J & R Music World for 249. I like the natural sound for movies and the general feeling of quality but also noticed the lack of bass. I solved that problem by picking up an Infinity 100 watt 10 inch subwoofer from 6th Ave Electronics on special for 117.00 and now the sound is unbelievable considering the low cost. By the way, 6th Ave Electronics has great prices and some of the best home theater rooms I've seen. The combination of the GX-70 and a powered subwoofer is a great value in current Pro-Logic offerings and I have to give it 5 stars |

I don't know, maybe it's just me. I gave the GX-70 a try after talking the price done to $245 (I should have known something was up). I noticed the lack of bass in the local chain store, but thought it might just be the wide open acoustics. When I gave it a test drive at home with some Big Band Michel Camilo I thought I was listening to Ricky Riccardo on a late 50's b/w TV. If Yamaha claims this unit is 65 watts per channel (front l/r), then the logo should read "Yamaha, ha, ha, ha." I have an old Denton mini that sounds much better (better than the new Denons). Unless my unit was defective or your getting it for $125 I'd look elsewhere. |

Just purchased this product after searching it out at The Wiz (which matched J and R's price of $249)after reading the reviews here. I think the surround sound effects are a really fun and room-filling step up from my former Aiwa mini system. It doesn't have as much bass as the Aiwas do, but the sound is particularly crisp and it's graphic equalizer is fully adjustable. No complaints so far, and highly recommended as cheapie systems go. |

I've had my GX-70 for about two months and couldn't be happier with it. I use it in a small, tightly cramped computer room. Although it sounds pretty good, if you have a great ear or are used to listening to super high end audio equipment, you're not going to be impressed with the GX-70, much less any shelf system. But if you're looking for a $250 minisystem to put in a bedroom, the GX-70 quite simply sounds *much* better than comparably prices Aiwa and Sony offerings. There's also that intangible 'feeling of quality', which the Yamaha has. It doesn't feel like a hollow plastic shell, like Awai. It doesn't echo when you tap it with your fingernail. It's actually quite heavy. |
