First thing first, these speakers ''killed'' all my other ipod docks (Harman/Kardon play and go II, JBL 400p, which ones sound very good).These speakers build extremely well,so solid, heavy and attractive.Very useful remote control features- you can adjust bass and tremble. Kanto Speakers i-Pair5 and Kanto Speakers SYD 5 iPod Speakers to my opinion are the best on the market, friend of mine has Bowers and Wilkins, well, I listened how it sounds-very good, but price is so high and believe me, I would stay anyway with i-Pair5 , for me it sounds better than B/W. i-Pair5 has AMAZING clear sound, full and rich bass, mids and hights,Strongly recommend this product.

First some background info.I am torn between being an Audiophile & a music enthusiast.I love the gear,I sometimes listen critically & also just rock out or relax without analyizing what I'm hearing.Musical taste runs from Classical & Jazz to Acoustic/Electric Blues,Classic/HARD Rock & Raggae.My main system consists of Yaqin MS-34D Tube Integrated amp with Electro Harmonix EL 34 power tubes & NOS Mullard M8100's in the PreAmp circuit,Marantz DV-7001 running through a Yaqin single JJ 6922 Tube Buffer,Dynaudio Audience 52SE speakers,MAC(My Audio Cables)Silver plated copper & Pure Silver cables.Having just moved into a new apartment & with the main system set up in the living room I found myself in need of a small system for my man cave.Instead of setting up a regular 2 channel rig I decided to go with a computer based system with the possibility of also using my iPod Nano as a source.With my entire cd collection downloaded to my Asus K52 Laptop as iTunes Lossless files & my iPod Nano sync'd via compressed files I started looking for active speakers.At first I was looking at some Quad 11's & 12's but wasn't sure I wanted to spend that much $$$ & they didn't have any iPod connectivity.A Google search for iPod speakers yielded a TON of choices so I just kept scrolling through until I came across an AV Guide review for the Kanto "iPair 5"speakers.I liked everything they offered as far as iPod control & input connectivity,I LOVE Kevlar & Silk for driver material, the review was VERY positive & the MSRP was REALLY encouraging at $350.00.With no dealers in my area a little digging on the Bay yielded a pair of the 5's in Black Lacquer, delivered via USPS Priority Mail so I pulled the trigger.3 days latter they arrived & were promptly removed & installed in the man cave.Since I didn't have a Dac to interface between the computer & speakers I pluged them into my backup DVD player,a Yamaha DVD-S1800 via Audioquest Topaz interconnects.Pop in a cd,press play & NO SOUND,WTF?Ok so I dig out the manual & start reading,the default input is the iPod Dock so you have to scroll through the input selector to get to the RCA Input.WOW! BASS & MORE BASS! DEEP & a little sloppy I plug the ports with the foam bungs from my 52SE's,much better.I don't know how they did it but these little suckers have SERIOUS bass!If you have these even within 2 feet of a back wall try pluging the port & you will get tuneful,deep,tight bass.Now that the bass is under control I settle in for some serious listening.I like to listen to new speakers right away so as they break in I can hear each progression.Initially they have a shouty midrange,bright tweeter & no imaging or soundstaging.They now have around 20 hours on them,the tweeter has mellowed,allowing flutes to soar without becoming brittle & each breath before a note clearly audible.Cymbals are crystal clear with the initial impact followed by a nice decreasing ring.Bass is still DEEP & really performs better with the ports pluged.It has excellent tone & definition.Kick drum has nice impact with a hint of skin stretch audible.The midrange?Norah Jones,Dianna Krall,Stevie Nicks,Pat Benetar,Chris Issak you name them,voices are natural with no sibilance whatsoever.Cello's have a wonderful,woody tone that just begs for long listening sessions.Reed vibration of woodwinds clearly audible.Rock drums have excellent definition & impact.Imaging & Soundstaging?Very good image placement(inside the cabs) even when spread WIDE apart but they haven't yet broken outside thier cabinets & I haven't palyed around with toe in,having them facing straight ahead.Image size is good but not great,however that may change with more breakin. NOW,all the above comments are predicated on NOT pushing the volume beyond it's comfort zone.Once the volume hits a fairly loud level the speaker simply falls apart,something to be expected of a 45 watt,5" speaker.I can't believe how much speaker you get here for so little money! I would LOVE to be able to do a blind listening test with these against Dynaudio's new Multi Media speakers. I'm willing to bet that these speakers come within a nats hair of knocking the Dyn's off thier stands,& at 1/4th.the $$$! Downsides?I HATE that every time you power down they default back to the iPod input.The bass can be overpowering.They play fairly loud but NOT concert level.PLEASE remember however they ONLY list for $350.00,which to me is simply amazing.These speakers are a hell of a bargin & could anchor a VERY musically satisfying system! Don't be afraid of providing them with very good to excellent sources,they will reward you! 5 Stars all the way based on value for $$$!PS:Please excuse any miss spelling,I am an old retired soldier,not a college grad!
