Strength:

Clarity. Accuracy of Reproduction. Musical sound.

Weakness:

Slight audible hiss without dolby.

This is an excellent recording deck. I shopped around and compared several decks I no longer remember. I did compare the denon with comparably priced Sonys. The library at the university where I work was using Denons at the time, and that's why I sought this one out. I rarely listen to prerecorded tapes because they sound so bad, but the tapes I make from CDs with this deck are outstanding. I defy my visitors to discriminate between source and tape, and they usually can't. FM and vinyl recordings can also be pretty good. I tape without dolby because the sound seems to me fuller and richer. This means that at low volumes I can sometimes hear tape hiss. With the dolby, the hiss is rarely audible. Highly recommended. Trouble free for about three years or so now. For a cassette deck, this one has outstanding sound--the best I heard during my search.

I reported earlier that I had sent my deck in for repair. Turns out it was 3db down at 12kHz. They said the heads were in immaculate condition (after 3 years of heavy usage) yet out of alignment. They tuned it back to 20-25kHz +/- 2db, 20-18kHz +/- 1 db, and 3db down at 25kHz -- which is better than the brand-new specification.
It sounds now as good as it ever did -- great highs, clear detail in midrange. I'm glad I stuck with this deck; it is truly a great performer!

I've owned this deck for about 2.5 years. It's one of the best sounding mid-fi tape decks around. Its recordings don't sound muffled or boxy like most tape decks do, and it manages to produce a recording whose tonal balance resembles fairly closely the original. It's got more clarity and detail than most other tape decks, especially with the TDK SA-X and Maxell XLII-S tapes. Keep the recording level down to max out around +1 to +3 db and you'll get some good tapes from this deck.
Mine just crapped out on me last week and it's in being repaired. The right channel dropped out. This is the first problem I've had with it and I'll keep using it after its fixed because I like the sound quality and I'd have to spend a lot more money to get anything that sounds better.

Strength:

Durable, simple deck without a lot of fuss. Does an admirable job.

Weakness:

None really. I give my cassette decks a workout and have gotten my money's worth on this one. It has not been serviced yet after two years and I detect no change in speed, no flutter or major sound degradation.

It's been a pleasant surprise. I'm not that impressed with the sound, but it's a consistent, reliable performer miles beyond the horrible Sony and JVC consumer stuff I have used in the past. Now I just need another one for making dubs!
