Strength:

Incredible job of duplicating the source.

Weakness:

??

First let me say for those who do not know, each tape deck it calibrated to a specific tape, so where my brand deck may sound best with brand A, yours may sound better with brand B.

I am using a Nakamichi ZX-9 cassette deck, it is calibrated for all Maxell tapes, UD, XL-II and MX-S.

When using XL-II tapes the recordings were very nice but lacked a bit of dynamics from the source. When I used the MX-S all the dynamics are there, incredible detail! I am very impressed with these tapes. When using Dolby C the recordings are dead quiet as far as tape hiss. Whenever listening to a cassette recording, I would be thinking (slightly annoyed) how it was not as good as the source, I do not have those thoughts with the MX-S. Great tape!

Strength:

sound quality

Weakness:

too much high end treble

I FIND THAT THE MAXELL XL-2 HAS TOO MUCH TREBLE. IT HAS TOO MUCH HIGH END BIAS. THE METAL CASSETTE ON THE OTHER HAND IS VERY GOOD BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE THE WARMTH OF THE XL-2 WHICH IS VERY WARM AND PROVIDES RICH COLOR WITHOUT GIVING YOU HEAVY BASS. PEOPLE THINK THE MORE BASS THE BETTER BUT THAT'S WRONG! BECAUSE AUDIOPHILES KNOW THAT IT CAN MAKE A TAPE HAVE A MURKY OR CLOUDY SOUND. TOO MUCH BASS KILLS YOUR SOUND CLARITY. SO IN THE END THE MAXELL METAL MAY BE THE BEST TAPE FOR HOME RECORDING ON THE MARKET. MAXELLS ARE DEFINETLY BETTER OVERALL THAN TDK OR ANY OTHER COMPANY. NOW IF ONLY THEY MADE A 120MIN. METAL CASSETTE OR EVEN A 120MIN. XL-2 CASSETTE. THE ONLY 120MIN. CHROME CASSETTE THEY MAKE IS THE UD-2 BUT ITS NOT BETTER THAN A 110MIN. XL-2.
