Bought it almost 20 years back. Still works. Remote works too. I love the sound so refuse to scrap it. It's become a bit dodgy lately but after two decades it's ok

Now I know a minidisc recorder isn't an audiophile piece of kit due to the compression it uses but as a musical tool it is exceptional. Ok, it gave up the ghost to the 'disc error' problem that most of them had... after 11 1/2 months... but since a fix it's been fine, absolutely zero hassle. And its been in CONSTANT use since 1996. Still one of the best sounding decks out there, better that the 520 or 530 (had both at some point) and only shaded by the MDS-JE20ES. Get one if you can, if it breaks, get another.

The JE 510 Has been a FAITFUL little Unut - Custom of Sony Reputation. In regular Use - excellent Quality And Has NEVER LET ME DOWN.... Being One of The UNLUCKIEST People with ANY Equipment - I expected THE WORST and took out a 5 Year WARANTY - Going By Other reports HERE - Maybe as well I did ... BUT - PERSONALLY I think its NICE KIT. And I AM FUSSY !

Purchased this minidisc player to record my live tape collection over to a digital medium, and am certainly very glad that i did. The minidisc is a wonderful transitional medium until cd recording becomes a reality. minidiscs can be had for $5.99 each and actually improve the sound of a tape recorded at a low record level. I wouldn't give mine up!

I would'nt say the present minidisc format makes perfect copies,but I will admit that this Sony unit is FUN to play with. I had one for about six months,but I got tired of it. I sold it to my friend and used the money to upgrade my CD Player (Marantz CD-63) which, I was becoming irratated with! If Minidisc sticks around long enough, I may purchase a portable recorder. Digital still has a long way to go in my books. The sound of this unit was much better than some of the "entry level" 3-Head cassette decks I've used. Less fussing around was another bonus. I did notice some detail missing from the highs and the bass softened up a little but all in all I can't complain.

With this level of quality sound at such low prices, there is no reason to ever buy a casette deck again.

Untill a couple of months ago, I was looking for a digital machine recorder to tape all my lovely LPs. I was thinking to buy a DAT recorder. But ir uses tapes as recording media, and as we know tapes are dead but were not burried yet! I have considered the Pioneer PDR-05 CD recorder but it uses a very expensive
blanl CD-R (for music only) and it is not rewritable. That means: any mistake
and you throw away your money because the CD-R can not be erased and recorded again. So, I decided to buy the Sony MDS-JE510. What a fantastic buying decision! After to wash my vynil records with a mild detergent solution, I tape them using a Monster Interlink-200 cable. Sonic result is simply astonishing! No more worries about tape calibration, Dolby System selection, tape selection (normal, chrome, metal, ferrichrome, etc.), tape/head azimuth adjustment, bias setup, and all the technical rituals I used to perform with my Nakamichi and Technics cassete recorders. I just insert the blank MD, watch the level (for analog recording, only) and press REC button. The result: a perfect clone of my vynil albums. I get the same sonic results when I dubb my CDs with an optical cable.

I've just purchased a kit which includes the MDS-je510, the MZ-E40 and somevirgin MDs... Well, the MDS-je510 is excellent for recording and editing
It's quality is superb. I cannot say the same for the portable MZ-E40
(I wish it had a line out)BUT THIS KIT IS THE BEST VALUE YOU CAN FIND OUT THERE

If you want a professional MiniDisc Recorder, get some from Denon or a better model from Sony

The MDS-JE510 a "tape" deck??? these MD recorders are posted in the wrong catagory. They need their own catagory!

I just purchase one of these players yesterday (3/14/98). It is quite a nice piece of technology and with direct digital recording the sound quality is superb. Once I get my (old non-functional) turntable working - I'll start transferring my '80s vitage albums over. Good Job Sony! I'm giving this player five stars for for the combination of price & peformance. I really wish that the machine had a keyboard input for titling but I suppose I'll survive!
