Strength:
Great sound, live especially good.
Weakness:
Display lights burn out frequently. Would consider another tuner because of the difficulty obtaining the replacement lamps and the board they are soldered into. I leave the unit on all the time and the lamps in the display don`t seem to last more than a year. A drag to disassemble and repair. Lucky thing I`m patient. |

Weakness:
Nil really, you have to pay a lot more to better it I use a tuner fairly rarely but in my system of Naim components (including the seriously fabulous CDX/XPS) it does not disgrace itself. It occasionally reminds me just how good FM can be with a good aerial. The sound is weighty and crisp, a good clear soundstage that shines with orchestral music in particular. Perhaps the sound is a little 'shiny' for some and the bass lacks true depth and definition but these are quibbles. Although not in the market for a serious upgrade I have listened to more exotic and pricey tuners from Linn, Meridain and Naim and I would suggest you have to pay an awful lot me for a real step up. I have never had a moments trouble with faults as described above although I do not leave it switched on continously, in fact it feels physically solid and well-engineered. |

I bought this tuner, the AudioLab 8000T, via mail-order, sight-unseen. I have not been disappointed. It is very handsome, well-built and performs to complete satisfaction. I can listen to it all day and get very excited about the music I am listening to. I live in a difficult reception environment, and the Audiolab has no problem here. The sound is spacious, has bass and can drive a passive pre-amp very well. I sometimes can only tell it from CD source by its slight dryness to the sound, which I believe is an AudioLab trademark. It has no remote but its control layout is so exceptional that its a treat to use. I did compare it to a 70s Fisher studio tuner. Same selectivity but a very smooth and mellow sound. The Audiolab gets you involved in the rhythm and the performance. Basically, you will not be disappointed. |
