Strength:

great price, light, great sound quality

Weakness:

nothing

i've had this cd player for about a month now and i must say it's great. i bought it for about $150 canadian tax included and it was one of the smartest buys i've ever made. i walked in and out of future shop knowing that this was the cd player for me. the flashing lights at the top of the player do get annoying but since the player is so good it evens everything out. the sound is nice and clear making music so enjoyable and the fact that it's a 5-disc cd changer makes it even better allowing you to listen to hours of music without leaving your seat. i still think the remote could have been better (eg) allowing you to select the disc # with a number pad or something. Even though there's a dozen other cd players that can kill this one the problem is that they're 2-3 times more expensive. so if you need to save some dough and you want a great cd player go for the rca rp-8065.

Saw this player reviewed in the latest issue of THE Sensible Sound, and couldn't believe the high rating this $79.00 machine received. I was in the market for a "Fill in" C.D. player to wait out the new format wars, (Lets face it, C.D. is dead) and I could return it if I didn't like it. Well, I kept it. The reviewer was right, he discovered the budget hi-fi component of the year. Talk about the trickle down of technology. The sound is refined, base and midsection full and rich with a very slightly rolled off high end. This all makes for a very enjoyable listening experience. I know what you are thinking, brother and sister audiophiles, try to get your noses out of the air, this player delivers the goods, and if you will open your minds, you will be rewarded with one hell of a deal.

I got my RP-8065 from 800.com for $69.00 and shipping was free. I've only played it for about 6 hours so it probably isn't fully broken in yet. But, since I really don't have anything bad to say about how it sounds, I guess it's ok to write the review now. At first glance, the RP-8065 isn't much to look at. It's the first audio component I've seen where the chassis and the top cover are made completely out of plastic. This has to compromise shielding somewhat, but I didn't find the player at all noisy. Also, there's a row of buttons accross the top of the player (one for each disk) that light up. And the one that is being played FLASHES. I found this more annoying than life itself, so I took off the top cover (if you try this be careful, this one has two screws on the BOTTOM of the player that must be removed too.) , and unscrewed the small PC board that holds the buttons and LED's, heated up my soldering iron, and yanked those LED's right outta there. I think it's a MAJOR improvement!! (there's another display that tells you which disc is playing anyway, and the direct access buttons still work) Well, there goes my warranty I guess. For $69.00 I'll take the risk.
Other than that, I LOVE this thing!!! I took it to my brother's house and compared it to a new Kenwood 5-disc player that he just bought (for twice as much) and I actually preferred the sound of the RCA. It has a very nice tonal balance. The Kenwood was too bright. Not just more extended in range either, The whole balance was just too bright, not as 3-dimensional.
When compared to my Marantz CD-67SE, The general tone was just about the same (slightly warm). Although the Marantz was slightly more extended in the highs and lows, making it a bit smoother and even more 3-dimensional. I expect the gap will narrow as the RCA breaks in. I'm sure it will open up at least a little more.
I am also impressed by the RCA's changer mechanism (fast and smooth), and by the good sounding headphone output (with volume control). And the front panel looks pretty cool, once you get rid of that strobe light!!! (I can't belive nobody else complained about that!!!)
All and all, I think this thing's a KILLER DEAL for $69.00, or even twice that. Very possibly three times that!!! That said, how couldn't I give it 5-stars??!!

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

Speed of finding discs
Stupid flashing strobe (VFD) Very Faggy Display!
Can't shuffle songs
Slow
Crappy signal to noise ratio

I guess if your poor and only have like $5 at a garage sale. Then this CD player might be good. But even then it sucks. Don't make the same mistake I made, for $70 I could have bought a better used CD player unit, and still had money left over for something decent like a sandwich or a a good craftsmen hammer to break this this crappy RCA.
Don't buy it unless you plan on breaking it. It is a good one to break though.

Strength:

Extremely inexpensive (I have two, one was $60 and the second was $40), sounds as good as any other CD player I have ever listened to (I own Toshiba, Pioneer, and Mitsubishi component models).

Weakness:

Questionable reliability judging from the number available as factory refurbished. Will not play CDR/W's and PNY brand CDR's (the latter which play fine on everything else I've tried). A pity because PNY are the most inexpensive brand I've found of CDR's.

This model is obviously built to a price. The case is plastic and it just does not have a high quality feel. However, CD's play as well on it as they do on anything else and in the end that is the most important thing. For $200 I would not be impressed, for $40 to $60, it is a screaming bargain in terms of high quality CD playback.
