Strength:

It looks nice

Weakness:

It broke - just like my Sony phone and Sony Stereo Receiver

This unit looks nice and sounded great while it worked. However, after 9 months, the Mega Bass and volume stopped functioning. Now I can only listen to it at one volume with no bass. Against my better judgement I bought another Sony model to replace it (Model 200 something or other) and took it back the same day after hearing how crappy it sounded. Either all highs, all super lows with the Mega Bass turned on. I've only owned 4 Sony products in my life and 3 of them have broken (phone, stereo receiver, and Portable CD player)and I take care of my equipment! The only unit that still works is my 8mm video recorder, and that is probably because I rarely even use it. I will never buy another Sony product again. Granted, I think they have the best styling, but if it doesn't work - styling doesn't mean squat.

Strength:

Excellent design, logical button placement, convenient accessories included

Weakness:

AA Battery life not as advertised (12 hours)

While some people may have trouble with their Discman D-E301, I have not had that much. The one problem that really irked me was when my near scratchless CD skipped almost constantly on a flat surface of a table. At first I thought it was the CD, but after I turned on the ESP, the problem resolved itself. I use MegaBass sometimes, but do not miss it since I listen to classical music and do not leave MegaBass setting on constantly. The case design could have been better- less buly with the flared edges, and the pointy nose, but otherwise this is a great SONY product. I also purchased earbuds (not great sound I know) that included a volume control. With both the volume on the unit itself up and the volume on the earbuds up, the sound is deafening. I would recommend this product to those who are looking for a low-cost, high-value, reliable portable CD player. However, I am moving on to MD (Minidisc) formats and would recommend MD to those who would like the compact design, recordability, and reliability (standard 40 sec ESP) of the MiniDisc.
