LET ME START WITH THIS: THE NOMAD JUKEBOX IS A GREAT PRODUCT!!!

After reading a lot of the reviews, I found it necessary to post one of my own. First of all, there's a lot of whiners that probably never upgraded their playcenter software or firmware. And those who have, when's the last time you checked for an update? Most of my gripes about the product have been taken care of. As for outstanding problems (such as no "shuffle all"), I'm sure creative will come through.

I was a little disappointed that I couldn't backup the preloaded songs. I didn't want to delete them, but I needed the space. Fortunately I found some info on how to remove the protection and upload the music for backup to make more room for tunes I wanted more immediately on it. There are many Nomad fans on the internet, and it won't take you long to find sites such as www.nomadness.net dedicated to helping you make more from your NJB.

I never thought the 6 GB drive would be limiting, but it is, especailly if you like higher bit rates for better quality in your music. Fortunately I found info to upgrade to a 30 GB.

I'm a little disappointed there's no remote yet, but I'm sure it should be out soon. I really want the RC codes so I can pump them into my Pronto.

Anyway, if you are interested in buying a nomad jukebox, you're smart by checking audio review first. However, I do have to mention that due to dates of the reviews, some are very misleading because of firmware and other software upgrades. I've had my jukebox since October 2000, and it has treated me REALLY WELL!!! I had many more complaints about it then, but what do you expect when you buy something brand new? Don't worry.... most of the fixes have come, and more are on the way. I hope this helped, Cheers!

    Strength:

Capacity. Ease of use. Looks. Sound. Line out.

    Weakness:

Battery life. Playcenter (PC software) instability.

Sound of this unit is great. Line out is superb. Headphone out is not loud but has good sound if the equalizer is used.
Size of this unit is ok.

Playcenter, the PC based software for loading the unit, is slightly buggy and made my system unstable by just running the thing. But it works.

To make a long winded review short, this is a great gadget, but has VERY POOR BATTERY LIFE. This makes portability a joke. Today, both sets of 1800mah batteries gave only 2 hours of playtime each!!! Ridiculous. This unit is NOT for portable use, if you consider battery powered use portability. If you use it at home, remove the batteries and plug it in the wall (batteries get hot).

I have returned it. I have also had the Archos 6000, which sounded terrible, and lasted less than a week. I think I will pass on MP3/WMA jukeboxes for a while, as the only decent ones cost $500. Give them a few months or years.

Try MP3/CD players instead, or Minidisc.

Me? The Nomad Jukebox was a waste.

    Strength:

It holds tons of files. The software is easy to use. Hook it up to Cambridge Audio speakers and the sound is good. I use it in my office at work.

    Weakness:

It's too heavy to use for carrying when excercising and I don't know how the internal drive would stand up. The software occasionally freezes when downloading.

All in all I love the product. If you want to take your CD collection along with you to the office, cottage or vacation, this si what you want. It also has car hook up and you can set the play mode and choices before you leave the house.

    Strength:

    Great capacity
Portability, can use at home, work or in the car
    Upgradable

    Weakness:

    Low headphone volume
    no shuffle

I bought this mainly for use in my car because I got tired of waiting for car mp3 players. Getting it to integrate with my car cd player with any quality has been a problem, but it's not the units fault. Downloading music is easy and upgrading the firmware and software is also easy. I just hope Creative adds track shuffling to the unit. Have heard some hiss in it but I will blame that on low quality cd rips.

    Strength:

    Storage Capacity, Portability

    Weakness:

    Battery Life, Storage Capacity

Let me first say to those that think this player is expensive, think again. Try calculating the cost of having enough flash cards to have the same capacity. If you do a £/$ per MB of storage you can quickly see the value of this unit.

However for someone like me who has a lot of music (700+ cds) there is enough storage space. Creative need to start offering models with larger hard-drives in them.

My main problem with the player is that I can only get about 4 to 5 hours out of its batterys. I seem to be one of the few who hasn't been plagued with short battery life spans. Its a shame that Creative didn't use something a little more powerfull.

During my usage of it, the player has managed to completly lock up. The only action being a press of the reset button underneath.

The playcenter software that comes with the player, used for encoding music, is pretty good (though not quite winamp or media jukebox) and uses the franhaffour (sp) mp3 encoder.

Overall I really like the unit, I am glad I waited for the harddrive mp3 players rather than the flash card players.

Go out, stuff it full of music (remembering that the player comes with 2gb of music/books already on it) and enjoy.

    Strength:

This MP3 Player is the best portable unit on the market. The audio quality is unmatched, as is its design and abilities. The Nomad Jukebox can also be purchased now with 20GB capacity from http://www.nomadjukebox.net/ ! If you are a current owner of the Nomad Jukebox 6GB MP3 player, you can also upgrade your player with their detailed install instructions and 20GB hard drive which is preformatted and ready to go!

    Weakness:

The player could use better headphones, battery life and less "purse-like" case. However, most people would want to purchase their own headphones, the Jukebox comes with 2 sets of batteries and other cases are now available at nomadworld.com which are simply amazing!

The best player on the market. Buy a 20GB player at http://www.nomadjukebox.net/ or upgrade the 6GB Nomad Jukebox that you have to 20GB. They have great prices and service. The Nomad Jukebox MP3 audio player is the best portable player on the market in its design, quality and price. Nothing even comes close!

    capacity

    Weakness:

    speed, quality, crashes

I got my nomad jukebox two weeks after ordering it. I immediately loaded up a few gigs of mp3's. The device worked fine while connected to wall power, but would randomly crash when running on batteries. After two weeks, the jukebox wouldn't charge the batteries any more. I called Creative service, and sent it back to them. They originally told me it would be 10 days before they returned the device fixed (or replaced). After one month, i called them back, and they told me it would be a week as they were out of stock. It's now been two months since i sent them the jukebox. Their service number doesn't let you talk to a person, only leave a message. I've left three messages, and no one has yet to call me back.

I'd love this mp3 player if it worked, and if Creative stood behind it. Unfortunately, they seem to have rushed a sub-par product to market, and they're not standing behind it.

    Hello.
I DID NOT buy this product yet, because i had some
very very big doubts about it:
    1. It 'drinks' batteries (means less then 2 hours of use),
hence Creative support it with 8 rechargeable batteries
(it takes four of 'em at once).
    2. UNCOMFORTABLE for joggers ---
it's big and clumsy, and even Creative themselves
are quoted as saying it's unlikely for move.
it has an 8 mb memory to protect shocks, but i understood
    it doesn't help much.
    3. Also heard about the limitations they're
planing with the record companies, a thing that could
maybe bother us listening to our music.

Though these and other defects it has, the big pros
    stays:
-6 GB memory for MP3, WAV and others avaliable on this gadget
    -Real fine sound Quality
-nice price: $270 and even less for that 6 GB
capacity, when other MP3 players with 64 MB
cost about the same price (or a little less),
it seems that you receive a good deal.

I put it under five stars, just because i was
forced to give a mark (therfore it's useless).

All in all, you should decide calmly,
and remember that not all that shines is gold.
If you decide to purchase it, i'd recommend buying also
another set of good rechargeabble batteries, and much more
important: GOOD HEADPHONES (I heard that the GRADO SR60
are the best value for they're price range - $69.)

In case you've bought it, please info me via email
to shalev86@yahoo.com, and tell me what's your opinion,
and you might as well add your notice next to this one.

    Good luck (*.*)

    Strength:

Disk space, looks compaired to other jukebox options, online message board supported

    Weakness:

somewhat bulky, battery life, drive size not easily upgradable, no remote (yet), software buggy

Looks like I'm 1st to review post price drop. Also, there now is a car adapter here:
    http://shop.store.yahoo.com/nomadjukebox/nomjukcardca.html

If you have other audio devices, in my case a all-in-wonder, there are conflicts which require re-installing the sound drivers every time you load each device. For those looking for a large library of tracks to have driving into work or at work where you can plug the thing in, it's really convenient. If you need a unit for alot of on-the go use you'd probably want something smaller w/ longer battery life. Apparently later this year a more rugged unit with a longer battery life will be available which may be an option if you're patient.
