After having owned my DV62si (oak color) bookshelves for about 7-8 yrs., I am revisiting this forum .
I posted many years ago. That review was based on using these speakers with primarily tube amps.

Lately I have used these speakers with high power solid state amps.

The speaker's sound is more detailed and smoother with solid state amps, in my opinion.
It was not a matter of breaking them in. I re-tested with tube amps and got the results posted originally.

These are decent speakers.

Having met and auditioned Mr. Frias' speakers, I have no doubt that his work can enhance this product.

Strength:

Smooth tonality, great low end for bookshelf speakers (on foot high stands on my desktop), good sensitivity for low-power amps like the T-Amp, realistic imaging (I still look around when hearing whispers or recorded ambient sounds).

Weakness:

Relative to other speakers at the same price, none.

This is a story of two products, actually: the BIC America DV62sei speakers I purchased from Amazon.com and the crossover upgrade from Ed Frias.

I bought the speakers originally because I had learned only last year about the outstanding, low-cost Sonic Impact T-Amp, which I modified in the usual way (supply bypass and input caps, improved enclosure, etc..), upon which I needed a better set of speakers to better appreciate the great tonality of that little amplifier. The DV62si speakers had consistent praise, both unmodified and with the Ed Frias crossover modification. I purchased my pair for $109 from Amazon.com and got them in about a week with the free included shipping. I used these for several months, building my own appreciation for well-recorded music during that time and reading as much as I could about other speakers and the T-Amp technology in general.

This spring, I finally sent a note to Ed expressing my skepticism about whether I could really hear anything better than what I thought I was already getting out of the speakers. He made the point that the benefit may depend mostly on my own comfort with how the speakers delivered mid quality and known high brightness, and reminded me that with the smoothing of the mid-to-high corrections of his crossovers, the low end would relatively come out a bit more. I listed carefully to several test albums for a week, and then sent off the original crossovers for modification.

Exactly a week later, they arrived in a small box. I put them into the speakers and began re-listening to my test albums. Right away I heard the difference, best expressed in this following note that I sent to Ed shortly after I finished my listening:

"Hi, Ed. I received the BIC DV62si crossovers on Wednesday, true to the 1 week turnaround that others have mentioned. Listening carefully the next day to the before/after music pieces I had prepared, I could tell quite a bit of improvement in the overall balance, and indeed, even my unsophisticated ears could hear the improved smoothness of the midrange. But the biggest surprise is what I DIDN'T hear--the speakers! The BICs were very good before, but now, they are completely transparent--I hear music coming from their direction, but it plays across a wide and detailed sound stage, with much better imaging than before--a most pleasant surprise. Very good for a $32 upgrade on a $109 pair of speakers. I'm more than satisfied!"

I am still appreciating new nuances in my older music, and finding joy in new recordings. Currently listening to Robert Glasper Trio's album Mood from eMusic--a very nice, smooth-sounding jazz performance for this amp/speaker combination. The speakers are very good for vocals as well!

BTW, I recently sold my older Bose 301 bookshelf speakers after I heard what these could do. I had thought those speakers would do at the time, but the modified BICs truly out-imaged the Bose speakers across all types of music and let me hear music with much more of an "ahh" experience. By comparison, the Bose speakers now sounded hugely disappointing and flat.

As a related footnote, I can't say enough about the T-Amp, which is truly the poor man's entry into quality musical reproduction. Compared to my previous systems, now I know what a good listening experience is really like, and feel I can move up later with better understanding of what to listen for.

Strength:

Price, sound and built well. Nothing even close to this for $100

Weakness:

Stock tweeter is a bit weak allowing for a very small sweet spot.

I bought these over 3 years ago and was not quite happy at first. They sounded a bit bright. I, like many others on here, sent the crossovers to Ed Frias for modification. Made a big difference in extended listening periods by eliminating the brightness. Excellent speaker for the money. I am a tinkerer though and I had 4 brand new NHT superone tweeters laying around and they looked like they would fit, so I tried them out, they fit perfectly. What was even better was that the imaging and 'depth' was improved drastically!!!!!! I did that swap 3 years ago, I have never even thought about switching back or upgrading to a different speaker, these are perfect the way they are. These are an absolute steal at this price, my younger brother thought so too, he bought a pair after hearing mine.

Strength:

Just about everything. See above.

Weakness:

For the price, none.

I've had these for just over a week. After a few days of break-in and trialing some different placement options with my stands, the speakers have smoothed out and opened up a bit, and bass even seems better. My ears are getting used to them as well, which I'm sure is part (albeit a more subjective part) of the break-in process.

My take at this point: I am more than impressed - I can't believe they sound as good as they do. My wife is even impressed. She always downplayed the value of good speakers, until we got these; now she can hear things in her favorite music she never noticed before. Up and down the sound spectrum, instrumental, male/female vocal, etc., music is clean, well-spaced/placed, and reproduced impeccably. Granted they don't get down to 20hz, but they go plenty low enough with solid, clean bass. Throughout my "pseudo-audiophile" years I've listened to the old Bose, Klipsch, Epicure, Boston Acoustics (when they were good), Polk, Phase Linear, B&W, Paradigm, and others in the mid-price range ($400-$800/pr). Maybe I'm naive or forgetful, but I honestly can't remember hearing speakers that sound as good as these, ever, much less at this price.

I bought a pair of the extensively modified Bic DV62si speakers from Ed Frias and Ive been listening happily since. I've had three sets of speakers, none of
them exactly audiophile grade (Boston Acoustics CR9, Sansui 2700,
Cambridge Soundworks M50) and I have to say that these are the best
speakers I've ever had in my house by a long shot. For sound, size,
and value I imagine it would be very hard to do better. I'm very
pleased. Thank you Ed, and I'm sure I'll be contacting you again for

Strength:

Clear highs, tiight bass, sound larger than their size, excellent soundtage and seperation of instruments, big bang for the buck here!

Weakness:

None for a speaker in this price range!

I bought BIC America Venturi V62s around 2000 I believe for around $200 for the pair. It may have been less. It's been so long I can't remember exactly. My brother recommended them and I couldn't be happier. I was looking for a little bookshelf to play music in college in a dorm room. I ran the speakers through an old two channel Onkyo reciever and they have remained true to there sound even to this day. I have always been impressed with their sound. They do not sound boxy at all and have an excellent soundstage with clear highs and tight bass. Sound much larger than their size and play loud without becoming distorted or muddy. I wonder how the newer Ventrui V62si would sound in comparison to the older classic V62s? Only other bookshelves I have owned are JBL Northridge Series E30s which sound less than satisfying in comparison to the V62s. These speakers were also surprisingly appealing to listen to decent jazz recordings. Seperation of instruments is excellent. Would recommend these speakers highly to any college student on a tight budget looking for a small bookshelf for rock or even jazz to jam out.

Hello 2 all.My name is Roger & this is a rather quicky review of this Impressive Little Big Sounding Speaker! To give you a brief background of my knowledge concerning HOW speakers should sound.Well that's simple. If I start 2 Smile & can "Say Hey WOW!" I could listen 2 this "Ear Candy" forever.Right then I know a speaker is starting to live up to "itself".I bought this pair at WWW.Acousticsounddesign.com after reading up awhile to hook-up 2 my Vintage Pioneer SX-1250 for a tryout.Using KnuKonceptz.com SilverPlated #12 with Rhodium Spades from HomeGrownAudio Co. & (custom made) Silver Pin Connectors to the Pioneer I tuned the FM dial to 106.7 "The Wiz" & soon was Awe Struck. These Speakers have continued to Impress me. The Imaging,Bass, working with the Midrange is Incredible at this Price!!Reading other reviews,I see that some are doing Mods on this Model.I myself see no need in my set-up.I'm hearing Instruments,Voices, etc. clearly, where they belong, with excellent separation,& unison when it should be.They seem to be improving each day as they "loosen" up.The wire also takes a break in period.
Well anyway,to add to my ever growing collection of speakers.I ordered another pair in Oak from WWW.Acoustisounddesign.com(tell Mike I sent You) ;-)& when they arrive I'll give this black pair to a friend. That should tell You exactly how I feel about this Gigantic Sounding Speaker! There has been reviews comparing this DV62si Bic America Venturi to those costing much more, with talk of a $700.00 figure.Let's just say from my experience..Hearing is Believing!Whether listening to the hardest Rock/soft Pop/Instrumentals/Jazz/Blues/Country & a variety of other sounds the DV62si more than lived up to it Reputation! You get what You pay for and then SOME!!It easly "Walks" & out "Talks" many speakers in it's price range & above. How far above. You Listen & decide. You'll smile at the MONEY You saved! And You Too,might Buy another pair!Take a close look at the Specs.I have a pair of the Newish Kilpsch RB61's.I can Honestly say I like the sound from the Bic's better. They go Deeper,"Attack" the strings with authority,& just plain sound Beautiful/Harmonious & Pleasurable to listen to for hours on end.No fatigue sets in.
I may ramble TOO MUCH I know.I hope You've gained some insight from my review to make your own decision to grab a pair of these Fine Speakers.A great 2 Way that accomplishes it's "JOB".Excuse me ;-)..Hendrick's is playing.
All the Best 2 All out there in CyberSpace.Look for my next review on the Polk LSi9's.Coming soon. Also from WWW.Acousticsounddesign.com....
Remember to always enjoy the World of Audio.Music 4 the Soul.Keep Smiling.

I purchased this set of bookshelves from www.acousticsounddesign.com for $134 including shipping as the front L/R mains for a small home theater setup. The room is small so I didn't need anything monstrous. Also, budget was a consideration. At this price, I was skeptical that these speakers would do the job, but the large amount of enthusiastic reviews for the Bic's with the Frias mods convinced me to take the plunge. I figured that if they were too bright or harsh, Ed would be able to tame them. Well, out of the box they were a disappointment. They seemed both thin and bright. I was ready to box up the xovers right there and send them to the chop shop. But I decided to let them break in for a week or so to see if they improved. I was encouraged by a review from someone named slottweak that I found here at AR and on his website who insisted that his DV62clrs (Bic center channel with the same drivers) improved dramatically after 60-100 hours of burn in. Well I can report that even after about 30 hours the sound is considerably better. The bass is starting to appear and the high end has smoothed considerably. Does this mean I will forego the mods? Who knows. I will wait until I have the whole system assembled and burnt in for a good 200 hours before I make a decision. But suffice it to say that these puppies are a steal for the price, even in their unadulterated form. I will say that they would probably be very unforgiving of bad electronics or any other weakness in the chain. The Denon gives me some sweetness that might be missing from a budget receiver. All in all, for the quality/budget minded out there, you can't go wrong. If you do think they are too bright, for an extra $80 bucks or so you can get all speakers in a 5 channel setup modified by Ed. That's a cheap insurance policy by any standard. One other thing, the black laminate finish is more like a deep charcoal gray, not unattractive, but not the jet-black that you might expect. An oak finish is also available.
