Strength:
Good bass, very nice balance at both low and high volumes, large presence from direct reflecting speakers.
Weakness:
Only in black. Shopping for a pair of speakers under $400. I took a couple evenings to visit Circuit City, Best Buy, and a couple small shop's close to home. I checked for some advice in a couple audio groups and found many different opinions. Everyone I know meant well, but I just did not get far with the over flow of different opinions. The best advice I received was to let my ears do the deciding for me. However, a couple guidelines I needed to follow included,no tower speakers, under $400, and I may use them for Home Theater later. I checked out the Infinity, Boston Acoustics, Polk, Definitive and Acoustic Research. There were a couple I must say that were fairly close to Bose 301's, and there were some that did not come close. Now looking at some other reviews and opinions of some audio group participants, I did not check if the materials were paper, or what type of material is used to build the rest of these speakers. After checking many speakers out, I think that type of info is not as important as some imply. All of the speakers sounded different in their own ways, and I assume that is from design and materials used. The fact is that I and those who were along with me all thought that the Bose 301 speakers were the best buy. I thank the individual who suggested I let my ears make the decision, and not the opinions of others. |

Strength:
looks, that's pretty much it.
Weakness:
boomy, gariany, harsh, crap parts darn it..I have to disagree, it's mighty easy to find a "placement" for these speakers....they go in the trash. But I guess, after much work *Mike*, who copies his own posts also and lies, and reposts under a new name finally got it & I really can't ppreciate what I'm hearing now. Weakness:
build quality Boy, has Bose gone downhill. I still have my old Bose 601's that I bought in 1981 and they still crank. The build and sound quality of Bose products back then were great! I looked (but didn't hear) the new 301's at a nearby Fry's store the other day and the build quality is terrible. Too bad Bose has gone by the wayside. My rating is for build quality, not sound. Strength:
warmth, even & balance sound, sharp & crisp vocals & details (contrary to what others claim)
Weakness:
have to be placed "properly" (as with all other speakers) I've "auditioned" a lot of speakers to the point where those salesmen are probably wondering if I do it just to get on their nerves ....well, the point of doing the auditioning is just to validate or refute what I keep reading from those so-called "audiophiles". My observations in comparison to the above-mentioned brands. The Bose 301 IV's Similar Products Used: polk rt's, MS, Paradigm, B&W 3 & 6 series, Missions, energy, dynaudio audience series |

Strength:
High quality paper cones and tweeters ,not that cheap metal or kevlar other brands use. High quality spring clips. No cheap gold plated binding posts here. Beautiful press board.
Weakness:
None. When you're through with all the other pretenders, buy these. My friend has B&W's that he spent $8000 for a pair. I think that my Bose are a little bit better. Of course I lost most of my hearing shooting beer cans off the junked car in my front yard with a shot gun, so you should probably decide for your self. many amen on the previous review. I worked at best buy for about a year and everytime anyone walked away with a Bose speaker I felt really guilty. My job is not to discourage anyone from buying anything at the store, but I tried as hard as I could without being too obvious to talk people out of buying Bose. Some just don't want to listen. They hear Bose and think it's good because they heard the name. The fact is Bose spends more money on ads then all the high end speaker companies combined. They are the only speaker company with a tv commercial. It's obvious that they spend most of their money on ads and very little of it on research and development and even less on the speakers themselves. They are absolutely horrible speakers and a lot of speakers one third and less the price sound much much better. The bass is muddy, midrange is very lacking, and no quality high at all. The buid quality is the worst then any other speaker I've seen. |

Strength:
Excellent performace for the design. I am quite happy with these speakers. I had originally bought them as future rears until I could afford something *much* nicer (which I will determine when the time comes). I presently live in an apartment and could not take full advantage of anything much bigger than bookshelfs anyway (without getting evicted). For the 12'x14' room I have, they perform quite nicely. I have no complaints for what they are. They sound great for music as well as for movies. I did find their bass output to be somewhat limited, but in conjunction with the Bose center channel I got, everything sounds just fine. For more emphasis, well that's what you buy a sub for. To sum up, if you need bookshelfs go for these if the price suits you. If you are a true audiophile then why are you even reading this? -- go get some electrostats. In the end, listen to your ears, not the gratuitos Bose bashers. |
