Strength:

Good bass, very nice balance at both low and high volumes, large presence from direct reflecting speakers.

Weakness:

Only in black.

Shopping for a pair of speakers under $400. I took a couple evenings to visit Circuit City, Best Buy, and a couple small shop's close to home. I checked for some advice in a couple audio groups and found many different opinions. Everyone I know meant well, but I just did not get far with the over flow of different opinions. The best advice I received was to let my ears do the deciding for me. However, a couple guidelines I needed to follow included,no tower speakers, under $400, and I may use them for Home Theater later. I checked out the Infinity, Boston Acoustics, Polk, Definitive and Acoustic Research. There were a couple I must say that were fairly close to Bose 301's, and there were some that did not come close. Now looking at some other reviews and opinions of some audio group participants, I did not check if the materials were paper, or what type of material is used to build the rest of these speakers. After checking many speakers out, I think that type of info is not as important as some imply. All of the speakers sounded different in their own ways, and I assume that is from design and materials used. The fact is that I and those who were along with me all thought that the Bose 301 speakers were the best buy. I thank the individual who suggested I let my ears make the decision, and not the opinions of others.

Strength:

looks, that's pretty much it.

Weakness:

boomy, gariany, harsh, crap parts

darn it..I have to disagree, it's mighty easy to find a "placement" for these speakers....they go in the trash. But I guess, after much work *Mike*, who copies his own posts also and lies, and reposts under a new name finally got it & I really can't ppreciate what I'm hearing now.

If you [Mike] want to lie, and repost under a new name, [your Ip and style is the same make a review please don't stoop so low as to "repost" what the your other name said and so on. This is supposed to be informative & constructive ....so chill out!

Anybody who reposts like you do Mike what you already said to boost ratingsa, to say is definitely 'LOW CLASS' that's as far as I know.

AS far as the 301's go..they're junk & they're not worth the money, more expensive than any pair of leather boots I have ever seen & to think they last longer than a ham slice sitting on your kitchen counter without refrigeration. *Mike*

darn it..i have to agree, it's mighty hard to find a "placement" for these speakers. But i guess, after much work *L* finally got it & I really appreciate what I'm hearing now.

If u guys wanna make a review please don't stoop so low as to "mimic" what the other has to say & vice-versa. This is supposed to be informative & constructive ....so chill out!

Anybody who copies what anybody has to say is definitely 'LOW CLASS' that's as far as I know.

AS far as the 301's go..they're good & they're worth the money, cheaper than any pair of shoes I have ever seen & to think they last longer than your shoes. *L*

Strength:

can't tell you

Weakness:

build quality

Boy, has Bose gone downhill. I still have my old Bose 601's that I bought in 1981 and they still crank. The build and sound quality of Bose products back then were great! I looked (but didn't hear) the new 301's at a nearby Fry's store the other day and the build quality is terrible. Too bad Bose has gone by the wayside. My rating is for build quality, not sound.

Strength:

Surround sounds, nice mid-range, do not need tobe at sweet spot to enjoy.

Weakness:

Boomy bass, roll off highs.

For $300 bucks, I think these speakers do the job and reasonable for casual listeners with low fi electronics . I am not going to detail of how they sound but I know that they sound reasonable. Some of reviewers appear not to like Bose speakers and I dont understand why. If you want to hear smooth mid-range, crisp high, nice-tight-deep bass, spacious soundstage, three dimension music layers, musicality whatever audiophile terminology is, welcome to dream-land. First of, I would'nt wander at BestBuy and-or CircuitCity and waste my time audition these speakers.

My interconnect costs as much as a set of Bose 301s. My brother who still in College is the happy owner of the 301 and I am with him.

Strength:

warmth, even & balance sound, sharp & crisp vocals & details (contrary to what others claim)

Weakness:

have to be placed "properly" (as with all other speakers)

I've "auditioned" a lot of speakers to the point where those salesmen are probably wondering if I do it just to get on their nerves ....well, the point of doing the auditioning is just to validate or refute what I keep reading from those so-called "audiophiles". My observations in comparison to the above-mentioned brands. The Bose 301 IV's
1) sound very good & don't hurt your ears! they've got warmth.
2) produce very balanced & even sound...you don't have to sit in between those speakers...u can sit right beside one of these babies & u still don't hurt ur ears...though the sound is still loud & clear.
3) They ARE NOT EXPENSIVE! as others would claim.
4) Paired with Yamaha amps & a cheap subwoofer & you've got urself a good stereo.

don't be cowed by those so-called audiophiles who r so darn pretentious they're "ashamed" to be seen at Circuit City stores. Heck, what's wrong with mass-marketed stuffs?

Lastly, most of those who claim to buy stuffs of real "audiophile" quality probably have much, much ,much , much smaller net worth than those who are not ashamed to buy stuffs that are good but are sold in chains like CC.

What's important is that YOU LIKE THEM. Don't follow the dictates of others. GO WITH YOUR OWN LIKES.

IF U ASK ME, I LIKE THEM A LOT. :)

Strength:

High quality paper cones and tweeters ,not that cheap metal or kevlar other brands use. High quality spring clips. No cheap gold plated binding posts here. Beautiful press board.

Weakness:

None.

When you're through with all the other pretenders, buy these. My friend has B&W's that he spent $8000 for a pair. I think that my Bose are a little bit better. Of course I lost most of my hearing shooting beer cans off the junked car in my front yard with a shot gun, so you should probably decide for your self.

amen on the previous review. I worked at best buy for about a year and everytime anyone walked away with a Bose speaker I felt really guilty. My job is not to discourage anyone from buying anything at the store, but I tried as hard as I could without being too obvious to talk people out of buying Bose. Some just don't want to listen. They hear Bose and think it's good because they heard the name. The fact is Bose spends more money on ads then all the high end speaker companies combined. They are the only speaker company with a tv commercial. It's obvious that they spend most of their money on ads and very little of it on research and development and even less on the speakers themselves. They are absolutely horrible speakers and a lot of speakers one third and less the price sound much much better. The bass is muddy, midrange is very lacking, and no quality high at all. The buid quality is the worst then any other speaker I've seen.

Strength:

Excellent performace for the design.

I am quite happy with these speakers. I had originally bought them as future rears until I could afford something *much* nicer (which I will determine when the time comes). I presently live in an apartment and could not take full advantage of anything much bigger than bookshelfs anyway (without getting evicted). For the 12'x14' room I have, they perform quite nicely. I have no complaints for what they are. They sound great for music as well as for movies. I did find their bass output to be somewhat limited, but in conjunction with the Bose center channel I got, everything sounds just fine. For more emphasis, well that's what you buy a sub for. To sum up, if you need bookshelfs go for these if the price suits you. If you are a true audiophile then why are you even reading this? -- go get some electrostats. In the end, listen to your ears, not the gratuitos Bose bashers.
