Strength:

Bass / Trebble / Imagining / Sound Stage. I was more disappointed with listening to the B&W 683. I could tell where the speakers were, and the sound was being fired at you, and was kinda shallow sounding. They were though, not bi amplified and most probably not run in correctly. But I would gladly choose these Speakers of the B&W any day.

Weakness:

Needs Speaker Spikes (initial massive jump) + Good Amplification and a Good Source (2nd massive jump).

Well I was first disappointed with these speakers to start with. Comming to the conclusion that my speakers were at fault, with poor imaging and poor dynamic range. I have since changed my setup to incorporate an Auzentech X-Plosion soundcard using ASIO4ALL and with 0ms of hardware buffer, having this connected to my Onkyo TX SR605. Not being the most musical amplifier in the world. The speakers have changed dramatically over 100 fold with the upgraded source + Speaker Spikes to stop the resonation feeding too much into the cabinet and providing muffled bass. Bass is now sharp and responsive. The character of the speaker shifts dramatically depending on the music being fed into them. For instance "Beyonce - Summertime" her voice is in front of you during to the chorus and shifts slightly left during verses. While the tones are heard from everywhere and the guitar is slightly left and lower of beyonce's voice. Speakers are blowing me away.

The biggest change so far is the source, going from a Creative X-Fi using Entertainment Mode, then switching to Audio Creation mode and selecting bit matched playback with ASIO. Then upgrading to an Auzentech X-Plosion for the HTPC benefits and continuing to use ASIO.

Hopefully if you power these speakers well and have a great source. The sum of the parts are greater than the individual components.

The speakers really really do shine.

Strength:

They will fill a good size room with sound. They have smooth sound at low to medium volumes. They don't take up much room. They make a good garage speaker or 2nd/3rd surround pair. Good for home theater - movies.

Weakness:

They don't have a full range of sound. They sound smooth but not rich or crisp. At times the can sound tinny. Must have a good sub. For the money you can get much better speakers, Axiom, Polk and Infinity are all better choices.
If you're going to spend $300 for a pair of speakers you're not happy with, then wait and spend $350-$400 on something you'll love.

Ok, I started out with JBLs and was disapointed. They sounded like crap. After I 10 or 15 minutes of listening, they tired you out. Bad speakers will tax your hearing. I went to the 201s which are good for home theater but are lacking for music. I liked them for about a week and realized I wasn't satisfied with the fullness of the sound. I went to a Best Buy and checked out the 301s. The selection Best Buy had was limited so the 301s were the best for the money. In the sound room they sounded great. At home they sounded good. I am really happy with them. I have 130 watt per channel Pioneer 7-1 with a Polk 10" sub and it sounds good in my home. My friend ordered Polk RTi6s (now discountinued) for about $30 more a pair. They were awesome. He was shopping new receivers and hooked them up to my Pioneer. The difference in sound was amazing. My Bose 301s sounded cheap compared to the Polks. The Polks were on close out at $249 a pair when I ordered mine. If I heard the Polks first, I would not have bought any Bose products.

Customer Service

I haven't had any problems yet, but I did go to the Mall of America and walked into the Bose Outlet Store to look at the 901s. I got ignored for 15 minutes. I guess I wasn't dressed right. I bought my Polks a week later.

Every thing

I dont like these speakers they sound terrable.
These speakers did not grab me at all, they sound very boxy and and undetailed.
I was very tearfull when i had these mutants, saying what have i done ,my money has been eaten away bye a stupid dealer that doesnt know much about speakers.
Any way I own a pair of linn keilidh speakers that sounds way better than these slime balls. The keilidhs are much detailed and transparent with a good liquid midrange. I rgrert bying these bose speakers coz i thought these new 301's would sound better then the older version, but i was wrong. older version is way better and has better body constuction.

RAPS YOU WITH SOUND. AUSOME FOR DVD

Weakness:

EFFICIENCY IS AROUND 89 EVEN THOUGH IT IS UNPUBLISHED. BASS IS GOOD BUT NOT SOUL SHAKING

I BOUGHT THESE SPEAKERS A YEAR A GO THROUGH IT INTERNET AND WAS UPSET. I HAVE A SET OF INFINITY SM152 FOR MY FRONT A DCM FOR CENTER
AND A SET OF INFINITY SM65 FOR MY REAR.
I REPLACED MY REAR SPEAKERS WITH BOSE 301 V. MY FIRST UNITS I WAS UPSET. THES SOUNDED CRAPPY COMPAIRED TO MY INFINITYS.
I PASSED BY A BOSE OUT LET ONE DAY AND AN TOLD THEM ABOUT MY EXSPIERENCE. THEY TOOK ME IN THE AUDITION ROOM TO LISTEN AGAIN. THEY SOUNDED BEAUTIFUL. THEY SAID YOU MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN A BAD SPEAKER THE FIRST TIME. NEEDLESS TO SAY I BOUGHT A PAIR HOME.
NO THE BOSE DO NOT MATCH MY INFINITYS. I BELIEVE THERE EFFICIENCY RATING IS AROUND 89 OR SO. THEY LOVE POWER. SO USE A GOOD AMP.
ALLWAYS REMEMBER WHEM AUDITIONING THESE SPEAKERS. STAND IN FRONT OF A REGULAR SPEAKER BY ITSELF. REGULAR SPEAKERS SCREAM AT YOU. SO YOUR TWEETERS ARE IN YOUR FACE. NOW DO THE SAME WITH A BOSE 301 V SPEAKER. THE BOSE WILL NOT SCREAM AT YOU. IT WILL SCREAM AROUND YOU.
I USE THEM FOR MY REARS. THEY ARE AUSOME FOR DVD MOVIES AND
SURROUND SOUND. MUSIC. BASS IS GOOD BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEP IN YOUR SOUL YOU WILL NEED A SUB

Strength:

Look good, small mouth but loud. Pure sound. Give you a good imagine sound in your room if you set up and do right, man! 8 inch woofer baby.

Weakness:

The bass and treble not every deep and clear in the low volume. Take a long time to set up and find the right place to put in your room to make them sound good because the design " bass reflex" in the back.

I bought this speaker for my birthday and also at the time Bose 301 series V has in Vietnam. This speaker with the new technolopy "direct reflecting" while giving you a "stereo everywhere". I like this speaker because it looks great, small and produce a louder sound more than it looks but the setup and find the position for the speaker sound good like it look is quite complicated. With my opinion these speaker sounds good in a proper room just for music and movie. The postion to put is the most important one. I recommend First if you put in the stand you have to put its quite near the other two side of the wall near its corner so the bass and the mid can reflex to get to your ear. Second if you hang it on the wall you sould find the place in the middle of your wall or where you can find your eyes can see straight direction to the front side of the speaker. Don't never put it the wall and quite near the ceiling. The speaker does sound good, loud and clear man! But in some song and in movie I find the mid and treble not very clear. On the low volume the bass seem to be disappear and not deep at all. I think if you have a sub it will help yo out easy and also you need to find the right amplifier. After setting them up just enjoy the pure pleasure of listening great sound. Good luck!

Strength:

Being a hobbist speaker builder and musician, I know what sounds good to my ear. One thing i learned by building speaker systems and studing the art and science of this craft - NO speaker system is perfect and that some are more perfect than others. That being said, these speakers are not studio monitors in the truest sense nor are they the most perfect. But they sound good by the error of omission. You will not find the highest and most articulate highs nor lows that will cause the house china cabinet to clatter. Colorations are minimal, these things are not made for pin-point imaging but they produce a reasonable facsimile of of sound placement. To be honest and IMHO, speakers that image really well, can be fatiguing. What you do get is something that sounds believable in a musical sense, which after all, isn't what a good speak system tries to achieve?

Weakness:

Most home speaker systems, no matter the price, cannot reproduce with accuracy, the dynamic range and true volume of musical passages, they get close but no cigar. The dynamic range of this speaker is fair at most but to be fair, so are most bookshelf speaker systems, esp. in this price range. As mentioned before there are some colorations that distract from the experience but does not enter into the fatigue factor. The bass on some program material can boom and this is something that happens infrequently as the bass on this speaker is quite good with good pacing with the rest of the system. The issue seems to come from box Frequency cutoff at a higher frequecy due to its size compared to its 8" woofer. I find this strange because there is no chestiness on male voices as on other speakers that exhibit this problem. My guess is the peak in DB. is not large enough on male voce as on a kick drum to cause the issue.

Bose 301 Series V. 1 - 8" woofer and 2 - 2" mid-tweeters, one in front, the other in rear, cabinets are Black. Cabinet's materials is a mixture of 5/8" MDF and inert plastic and are positional, there is a right and left cabinet. The front tweeters are angled in-ward cris-crossing the listening area, The rear tweeter is aimed out toward the side walls. Being the curious sort that I am, I unfastened one woofer from one cabinet being careful not to cause any harm. The most striking thing inside is the re-enforcement basket behind the woofer presumibly to control excessive cabinet infuences on thesound. The tweeter's xovers are staggered, the front tweeter crossover is placed at a higher frequency than the back at about an octave apart (my guess). There doen't seem to be any crossover for the woofer as I did not see an induction coil to control high frequency rolloff. Its too bad Bose doesn't publish design specifics as other manufacturers, as the design in this speaker is quite elegant for the sound it produces. Maybe Bose would rather let listeners judge their products by sound alone?
