Strength:
Very faithful to the input source. This all-Naim system, completely standard, is characteristic of the marque with a very alive and rhythmic feel in every kind of music. Voices are clearly separated and presented in a convincing space if that is how the music has been recorded. The mid-range clarity is wonderful with natural acoustics and ungimmicky recordings.
Weakness:
The upper ranges are perhaps over-emphasized, though never strident. Bass is somewhat light though this may be to do with room placement - the rear-facing reflex ports fire at a large picture window, covered at night by heavy drapes. They also stand well clear of the side wall, by at least a metre. The lack of bass slam is apparent on synth bass. The Naim agent doesn't like the very heavy (>60 lb each) Target Foundation four-pillar stands. He thinks they absorb bass energy and would prefer a lighter weight stand. I don't find this entirely credible. I think placement is probably the issue. Very clear light and fluent sound, though not at its best with syth bass Similar Products Used: Wharfedale 708. Nothing Hi Folks, I'm mexican but I'm living in Chile. My configuration: Jamo D830 Ex-concert 8 Cherry color Linn Majik-IP integrated amp with phono, 66 watts at 4 ohms in black color Revox S22 CD player silver Nad 533 Turntable with rega RB250 arm and Goldring Elektra stylus Audioquest Slate speaker cable (bi-wiring) Van Den Hul III hybrid rca interconects Sennheiser HD-600 Headphones. I know that I bougth the Jamo's as a very good deal, I saw in El Paso Texas the same boxes at 1,400 each, the same cost in Europe. I tested the Jamos D830 in my house, the Chilean distributor send to me a pair of speaker for one month, firts I tested with a NAD 32 and 370 then with an Italian integrated Tube amplifier. I bougth this beuty boxes one year ago, then I bought a Linn Majik integrated amp. I usued for my test some Chesky, Linn and Stereophile CD's and LP's. I hear Jazz Rock and classic music, Tango too. My wife is an Opera Singer, she knows about live music and she alway help me with her opinion. In my humble opinion I thing that is a very good product. Was the product of the year 19997 EISA. Strength:
Dynamic, undistorded, very revealing, excellent imaging.
Weakness:
Bright. I’ve had these loudspeakers for a while now and I’ve become familiar with their sound. (Jamo Concert 8 has changed name but is exactly the same loudspeaker as the Jamo D830). First of all build quality is a first class. Nothing I’ve seen in this price range can compare. Jamo has gone long way to produce theese beautiful and resonant-dead boxes. SEAS Excell mid/woofer is most wonderfull of it’s kind and it betters such a good quality 7” woofer that I had in my ProAc Studio 100. ProAc’s (ScanSpeak) woofer did go little deeper but in comparison to Jamos it was colored, imprecise and somewhat compressed. Concert 8 excells in this area: very clean and quick sound. Unusually good dynamics. (Roll off is at around 40Hz while bass at 38Hz is still audible. Distortion is according to a measurement I’ve seen amazingly low at typically <0.3% from 150Hz-20kHz.) Imaging is in class with best I’ve ever heard. Vocals are so focused that they become “visible” between the speakers. While vocals are very clean it’s apparent that volume is increasing from somewhere around 7kHz all the way to the highest frequencies resulting in very good imaging but also adding brightness especially to female vocals. Brightness in the higher frequency range can be avoided by toeing-in loudspeakers, but there is still left some slight “pinchy” or “shouty” quality on some vocals. Just play loud Whitney Houstons old Didn’t We Allmost Have It All and you’ll get the picture. Sometimes the “s” sounds sound little unusual like they are moved higher up in the frequency range. They measure and sound bright. Because of this you’ll need to invest on the best cables. Only a slight upgrade like superb-sounding Supra’s EFF-I interconnect (cheap) did a Lot to add refinement and remove the “edginess” in the vocals. Next step will be new loudspeaker cables. Better tweeter would do fine. Yes, I agree with that. For this money it’s embracing to see that Jamo didn’t care to implement fine tuning of high register like seen in Concert 11. Shame on you Jamo! Karlcarl from Finland gave this great idea to try resistors so I got my hands on a good quality ceramic volume pot which I connected to tweeter instead of connecting a constant resistor. As I’m waiting for better speaker cables I can tell that I hit the magical spot for vocals at 1 Ohm (nominal) while highs are best at around 0,5- 0,8 Ohms. You should be able to add a 0,6 Ohm (7-10W) resistor on a way to the tweeter without any drawbacks! I also use heavy Target R2 and believe that these are an optimal match f You really care for the imaging and bass. My conclusion: If you like impressively dynamic and undistorted sound with 3D soundstaging this may be the speaker for you. It’s beautiful and build quality is very high. This is also a VERY demanding speaker and it has some unreleased potential. Try best electronics (tubes will work well) and wiring you can afford. Even then you might be forced to try adding small value high power resistor to tame the tweeter. (Try even to upgrade speakers internal cabling). Do that right and you will be left with a pair of excellent speakers. At it’s list price at 1700$ it’s expensive, but if you can find a used pair for around 1000$ or less: buy them. Then run. |

Weakness:
4 Ohms, Cost, Slightly Smooth Concert 8 images beautifully and the speakers disappears behind the music. I do not find it bright - may be setup dependant. The speakers do not colour the music and are transparent with wonderful midband. Bass is surprising for such a small box and treble is clear. Slightly smooth is both good for longterm listening but the nth degree of details can be smoothed over. Similar Products Used: B&W 805, EPOS ES15 |

Strength:
Everything, small yet enough bass to shake the room. Best midrange in its class, very quick, detailed
Weakness:
Better tweeter would do fine (perhaps Seas T25 02 ) Perfect monitor to listen good quality software, unforgiving for poor quality recordings. Midrange is soo good and quick thanks to Seas Excell line woofer. Tweeter could be better, but you can not expect more in this price range. I do not mean highs are bad, they are very good but the mids are excellent. Use it with a SET then you are in sonic heaven. Similar Products Used: Jamo E850, Mission 78x , lots of other stuff |
