Ok i wrote a review back in 2003 about this center channel speaker saying its output was not loud enough and it needs to be fed alot of power to be heard. Well i am writing back to clear up a few things. I bought the H/K AVR7200 and connected the VCS10 to it not really giving it a chance to prove itself. After Getting an SVS subwoofer and really calibrating my system this center sounds awesome with my set up. I really should have waited before i wrote but yes i am eating crow right now because everyday i really enjoy the new found sound coming from this speaker. My lesson has been learned. When i took the time to really set up my systems controls and tweek a few things i found that this center only needed a 2db gain over all the other speakers in my 7.1 setup to achieve room filling sound. This is a good center and i dont need it to supply bass into my setup because that is what the SVS takes care of. In conclusion if you have Bose products and want your setup sound matched buy this speaker and please take your time and read/calibrate your system and you will enjoy this center speaker for years to come.

Strength:

good sound

Weakness:

the one thing i dont like is its dimensions. this center channel is long and is hard to find an entertainment center to accomodate it

very good natural sound reproduction. seems to sound best right below ear level with no more than about 30 degrees off of center. sound is still pretty good beyond that but doesnt sound as natural. this used with 301,201 setup and an onkyo 602

Strength:

clear and lifelike reproduction of voices i feel it has a wide dispersion

Weakness:

none

i honestly dont know how a center speaker should be judged i always thought center channels were for voice. then u have a lot of reviews on people saying they except what ur left and right channels would produce. to me the vcs-10 is very clear and lifelike, sounds like real voices are in the room.

Strength:

Design.

Weakness:

Lacks dynamic sound.

This has been such a deep disappointment. Many years ago I purchased a set of Bose 501 speakers and they sounded incredible. I just recently purchased the Bose AM-3 speakers for my front and the VCS-10 as my center. The VCS-10 never sounded good no matter what I did. I would either have to crank up the volume or increase the center channel on my Sony Surround receiver to +9db to hear the dialogue clearly. Even increasing the treble to +9 didn't help. The sound never sounded crisp, dynamic nor accurate. I ended up replacing it with a Polk CS1 and what a huge difference it made. My center channel finally came to life. Since Bose has become mass produced and marketed their sound quality and overal qualilty of their products has diminished. Eventually I will replace my Bose AM-3 fronts with Polks, and maybe some day when Bose proves they can make a better sounding product then I will give them a try again other than that I will continue to use other brands till then.

Style.

Weakness:

Sound quality.

Complete shock! I purchased this speaker to blend with my other Bose cube speakers and found the sound comming out of it was very weak. Movie dialogue was muffled and very hard to understand. I have always loved the natural sound that Bose speakers put out, but this speaker was such a let down. I recently returned it for a Polk CS1 and what a huge difference. The funny thing about the Bose is that prior to me purchasing it I went to several Circuit City's and one Best Buy to hear it and not one store had this speaker hooked up. Obviously they didn't want you to hear how bad it sounds. Lastly, don't worry about using a different brand as your center channel, because that is why you have adjustments on your receiver to balance your surround system.

Strength:

Sounds clear and completely lifelike. No annoying highs and the lows are just perfect enough to allow the sub to make up the difference.

Weakness:

Does not sound good with lower quality audio connections.

I have read many negative reaviews on this center speaker, but as many, I went ahead and purchased it to complete my Bose setup. At first I was extremely dissapointed how regular TV sounded and kicked myself for not listening to those negative reviews, but I was not ready to give up on it. I went ahead and raised the decibel level on the speaker, but no matter what it just did not sound loud or clear for that matter. I verified it was set at small, but still no luck. I popped in a DVD and it sounded great. So I figured there had to be a way to get TV to sound decent. So I really sat down and starting thinking. This is when I realized that my digital set top box from my cable company had an optical output for sound. I headed out to go purchase one and replace the composite cables I was currently using. I hurried home and hooked it up as fast as I could. The difference in sound was simply amazing. Dialog comes through clear and lifelike. Better yet, It was actually loud enough that I could hear what was being said. So in conclusion, if you have cable hooked directly in your TV or you have a digital set top box using composite cables, this speaker is going to sound like absolute crap. Make sure you have the ability to get a high quality audio cable and this center speaker really shines. My old Sony speaker is in the garbage as I speak. And to think, I actually thought it sounded better than the VCS-10 initially. Hope this helps.

Strength:

Hmmmmm..

Weakness:

The speaker. incomplete sound.

If you feel the need to start taking apart a speaker cabnet to remove and replace tweeters/drivers, how much thought really went into the design(by audio profesionals LOL)in the first place. A speaker should sound good without having to mod it or fight with so called tweek settings of your a/v reciever. When I had this so called speaker intergrated into my HT, I couldnt tell if my tv speakers were on or if the Bose was on. This speaker is a joke.

Strength:

Nice-looking slim profile, build quality, matches perfectly to other Bose speakers when set up correctly...hint, hint.

Weakness:

Takes a little tweaking to set up correctly, which discourages ignorant or proud people that really don't have a clue, and I say that with genuine compassion for those without purpose in life.

Bottom line: If a speaker sounds good to you and you need one, buy it, not because of reputation or recommendation from a friend, but because they sound good to you. Believe it or not, not everyone's ears are similarly sensitive to the same frequencies or volume levels...what may sound great to one person can understandibly sound substandard to another. That's why manufacturers allow the user to adjust volume levels and attenuate or de-emphasize certain frequency ranges. I am quite pleased with my VCS-10, maybe because I know how to set it up to correctly match the rest of my home theater system? My home theater system consists of a Kenwood KRF-X7775D THX Select 7.1 Home Theater Receiver (180 watts X 5), Kenwood KMF-X9000 two-channel, THX Ultra-certified power amplifier (to power the back surround speakers, hence 7.1), Bose AM-10 IIIs, two Bose 301s and the Bose VCS-10. The 301s are being used as my front left and right speakers, while the cubes are used as surround left and right and back surround left and right...I have a spare cube array as a result. After positioning all the speakers optimally for my room parameters, and matching all speaker volume levels to each other (the VCS-10 needed only 2db gain to achieve the same volume level), the Bose center channel speaker matched perfectly. I'm not sure why the center channel speaker needed more power to equal the volume level of the other speakers...might be because the receiver powers its four 2.5" drivers instead of the two 2.5" drivers in each cube array. All speakers were set to "normal/THX" vice "large." I am in hog heaven with this set-up, especially watching movies like 'Gladiator' in DTS-ES. For those of you that either skimp on a quality home theater receiver or don't take the time to read the manual to learn how to set your speaker levels and distances, shame on you for taking your shortcomings out on the Bose speakers. Once a friend sold his Bose 901s because he said they didn't produce good bass. I invited him to listen to mine, which, at that time, were connected to Pioneer's A91-D digital integrated amplifier. He was shocked and disappointed in his decision to sell his. Ya gotta buy quality components and read the manual, or stop wasting everyone's time with your unfounded complaining, "But I read my two-page manual and it didn't help!"

Strength:

Nice looks,sounds ok.

Weakness:

The sound is clear but not loud at all, need maybe 250 watts per channel to really hear it.

I bought this center channel because my entire speaker system was Bose and I wanted everything to match. I am using Bose 701 up front, 301 for surround, AM5 for rear surround and a JBL sub for bass. To deliver the goods i had bought a Onkyo TXDS 575X receiver which sounded outstanding but could never make this center sound better. So to make things right i go and purchase a Harman Kardon AVR7200 receiver thinking my Onkyo did not have enough power to drive the center channel. Well i spent 1,600 dollars for nothing because it sounds the same with the Harman receiver so now i know this speaker is not whats needed to do the job. it looks great on top of my 61 inch Sony but i go after sound qaulity and this VCS-10 dont have it. I really like Bose but this speaker should be discontinued.
