these are freakin AWESOME speakers. Right now netmarket has a special on the cherry for 279 plus shipping 314. I highly reccomend these speakers. The sound is very precise.

I audiotioned many other speakers before choosing these. These included the following, in my opinion worst to best.
    Cerwin Vega (E series?)
    Polk (RT series)
    Infinity (SM series)
    Klipsch (KEF series)
Mission (Don't the series, just the model number of 704 and 705)

I got the AR 328's for only 380 a pair! They sound absolutely beautiful on my Yamaha reciever (rx-v793). With the rear firering port they handle bass perfectly, although I reciently teamed them up with the AR S112PS sub (also a nice piece of equipment).

    Specs:

    8" Woofers (2) -- 5.25" Mid 1" -- Horn-Loaded Tweeter
    3" Rear fireing port
    Freq: 35 - 20kHz
    91dB
    20-200 watts
    8 ohms
    Just under 50 lbs
    42.5" x 9.5" x 11.5" HxWxD

I could not have been happier for the price I paid and the sound I got out of them --- 5 STARS!

    Strength:

the bass blew me across the room(well not litarally! Very loud and bouncy!

    Weakness:

I could feel vibrations all over my body and head.

Don't get too close to these speakers, otherwise a great buy! Really cool and nice looking! I recommend these to anyone who likes to rock out hard! Good for all kinds of parties too! The value and the sound of the Audiovox is close; however the audiovox speakers that I tested were half the price and can be fit in any corner no matter what! Get these and you'll know who your real friends are.

    Strength:

Crystal clear highs, natural balanced mids, tight hard bass. Great value thru mail order.

    Weakness:

    questionable quality form mail order

I will start by saying that the 328 I have sounds great. These are excellent speakers, crystal clear highs, sharp tight bass, (by themselves the 8"s cant get quite as low as i would like, but part of my 5.1 setup is my powered 15 sub that covers that area nicely.) I got the AR's for $189 each from jandr.com. Probably better speakers out their for the MSRP of $500 each that Sears sells them for (JBL, Polk Audio, HMJ). But for $200, these are the best deal going. [I had the sisters of the blessed choir over and they really like these speakers.]
So I originally ordered 2 of the P428PS for $199 each (essentially the same speaker, but 1 of the woofers is powered by an built in 100watt amp.) The 428's were a dissapointment (they are now discontinued, I think it is a design flaw or a problem with the internal amp, there was almost no bass response, and one of the powered subs didnt work at all). So I talk to JandR, they tell me to ship it back and they will send out another 428. I pay $40 shipping, and wait. And wait, and wait. So 2 weeks later, I call up JandR to see wassup. The sales rep tells me the 428 was a discontinued model, and they have no more available (I decide to refrain from asking why they didnt bother to call me with this info.) He suggests they can send out a 328, and doesnt seem to understand why I wouldnt want to have to different speakers. I finally convince him that it is neccessary for me to return the other 428, and that I will take 2 328's. I pay another $40 to ship the second 428 back to JandR. A week later ONE 328 shows up at the door. The tweater looks like someone stuck their finger in it. Is JandR selling returned/defective merchandise here? The box looked factory sealed, and JandR claimes they only sell new stuff.
Anyways, its been 6 weeks since I first ordered my speakers. I have 1 speaker, a model below what I ordered, and im out $80 shipping. Im not sure what im going to do know. The tweeter sounds fine, so im not sure if its just the dust cover poked in, or if theirs physical damage to the tweeter. Im still waiting to receive the second 328, who knows what I am going to get.

    Strength:

nothing special, exept some good bass

    Weakness:

the tweeter breaks up at higher volumes

I bought these speakers for $640 canadian. and I thought this was a good deal. I got home hooked them up to my piece of garbage Technics SA DX 940 receiver and I thought they sounded OK. but then I listened carefully and heard the tweeter was distorting and I wasnt imperssed. after that, one broke, I took it back and they gave me a factory return. this speaker was BAD the cone was tearing off it. that's when I took them back and told visions how it is, they tried to give me another speaker and appologized for the factory return they gave me, but I told 'em I wanted my money back, and I got it. and decided to buy a good receiver so I got a Marantz SR5000 and I'm planning to get some paradigm monitor 7's cause they are really exellent speaker and well worth a listen.

    Strength:

This speaker runs great for highs and lower mid-range frequencies it is not for bass.

    Weakness:

Very flat bass response even if placed in acorner or against the wall.

I auditioned the above speakers and liked them very much, but--- the money they were asking for ,well I decided to test out the AR's and was I blown away by the mid and upper frequenies. I have two PS112 subs with these on top of them, and they look great together. I have a Marantz SR8000 reciever that kicks booty and it sounds like heaven. To you guys out there that do not think they sound better than they do all I can say is you have to have a reciver capable of driving these things out to the autpobahn. Need I say more. I give them 4.5 stars.

    Strength:

Great sound. Good bass, mid and high range.

    Weakness:

    None for my taste

I listen mostly to classical and jazz and require speakers with flat frequency response (not to mention at a modest price for my budget). I replaced an old pair of AR3a that I had for almost 30 years. AR is true to form with their speakers. These 328's are the best buy for the money and I tested speakers costing several time more. The 328's flat sound reproduces the instruments accurately. I have a piano between the speakers and if you close your eyes, you'd think someone is right there paying the piano. And with the sub-woofer I'm in audio heaven. Listen to Ravel's Balero (can't spell it) and you'll see what I mean. Oh!...had no problem purchasing speakers direct from retail. Don't trust mail order on electrical equipment. OK for books, etc.

    Strength:

Nice looking in black ash, very good build quality, Heavy - 50lbs each! Gold 5-way binding posts. 20-200 Watts RMS power handling capability.

    Weakness:

    Nothing worth mentioning

I just purchased these speakers after many months of research(reading reviews here) and listening to other tower speakers at various electronic retailers. I auditioned many speakers - Energy(impressive), Mirage, B&W (very expensive), Polk's, Klipsch's and NHT's. All of these speakers had nice sound and I probably would have been happy with any one of these but I choose the Acoustic Research for 3 reasons - sound, price, and value. I got a smoking deal on them - I paid $750 Canadian for them - They retail for $1000. A real steal compared to what some of the other retailers are asking for the others I mentioned above. These speakers have excellent frequency response(34Hz-20Khz) and sensitivity (91dB). The bass that these speakers produce is fantastic. The highs and mids are well-defined and not sharp despite the horn loaded tweeter. Now, I know that some people out there feel that a more expensive speaker will have a better sound and better build quality but this is just not true. These speakers are very solid and even come with a five year waranty! I previously purchased the AR216's for rear surrounds and AR225 centre channel. Together they sound heavenly. I purchased them from a electronics store rather than online so shipping damage was not an issue. (Most of the complaints about these speakers seem to be related to shipping damage, missing pieces, etc. but very few, if any, are complaining about the sound or build quality. Many people are afraid of there quality due to the extremely low price that you can purchase these for online (especially in the U.S.A) but I assure you - if you purchase them from a reputable place, they will stand behind the product. Most of these online dealers are selling second grade, warranty returns that normally would have been returned to the company and trashed. This is what gives equipment like this a bad name. I connected them to my modestly powered Pioneer receiver(65 Watts) and was immediately greeted with a warm, room filling sound that was unheard from my old set of Yamaha 3-way towers. I can't wait to connect these things up to a receiver that can really make them fly! You just simply can't go wrong with purchasing this pair of towers. Do yourself a favor and at least audition them before you spend a lot more - to get nothing more. You won't be disappointed. The money you save can go towards purchasing a higher end receiver - that's what I intend to do:)

    Strength:

Great Looks, tight bass, great mids, crystal clear highs, powerful...

    Weakness:

    The packaging SUCKS ASS...

These apeakers are great! So powerful when used with a good reciever...High quality sound, great for HT and Music. I found them for cheap on netmarket.com, printed out the page and went to sears to get 'em!
...I was not impressed at all with AR's packaging! If anything bumped into the box while it was in the stock room at sears they probably would have been destroyed. Which means buy them at sears!! Don't order them online... you'll be pissed when you have to return them because the tweeter is crunched and a woofer is torn...
There is no comparison between the Bose 301's and these...these spkrs eat Bose for breakfast!! Make sure you have a powerful reciever with sufficient bass to drive these speakers. Having Bass boost or an EQ makes a big difference with these speakers.
anyway.. these speakers are perfection, low price very high quality. What more is there?
