My review is for my Advent/1 speakers recently purchased ( having read many great reviews from a variety of Advent owners ) for my music system. These would be the slightly smaller version of the New Large Advent speaker from about 1979. As an audio enthusiast and previous music student, I've owned several speakers over the years (including Dynaco A25's) and I must say these are truly my favourite. Recalling my first 'real' experience listening to music (from sources other than a transistor radio) brings back fond memories as teen with my uncle at my grandparents' farm. My uncle's Bogen amp (about 30 wpc, late 60's-ish) was placed on a beam in the barn. His speakers (not sure of the model, from late 60's-ish) were placed on hay bails....any WOW. What wonderful sound came from those records we played. Now back to my Advent /1's.....Insuring that I incorporate some decent wattage to do justice to their design ( I recommend a min. of 80 wpc....I'm using 120 wpc) I set them up on low speaker stands. WOW...the wonderful sound quality that I remembered was back. These speakers don't flinch with hard rock, classical or jazz....'Blood, Sweat and Tears' vocals and their musicality played remarkably. Clarity, warmth, power and bass to boot were back. The main floor of my house is filled with wonderful music that never gets fatiguing. When I desire a more intimate listening experience closer to my set up, all the detail and musicality I remember as a music student, with musicians back in the music room, is there as well......I would trust your ears as part of an overall listening experience with a variety of music in choosing a speaker. You won't be disappointed with the Advent /1's. Weakness:
Have not found any weakness as yet....The woofer's have been recently re-foamed. Purchased: Used
Model Year: 1979

Strength:
The Advent legacy's just plain sound great , no not the worlds best tweeter, not the very deepest bass. But to me all that subwoofer teeth rattling sound is not enjoyable anyway, plus its just not natural sounding. I often still listen to just my Legacys especially for classic rock or radio they just sound so right.
Weakness:
Maybe slightly weak in the midrange Spotted this pair of Legacy 2's in great condition in a thrift store. Paid my $22 and left smiling. I figured i could replace the drivers and have some nice classic looking speakers. The surrounds were rotted of course and the drivers are 8" in a 10" frame. I easily popped in some 10" drivers i had in storage and they sounded decent. Then after reading many blogs and reviews I found I could replace the foam on the old drivers. I had never done this before but it turned out to not be too hard and i read all I could before trying it. I let the glue dry overnight and was rewarded the next day with some really tunefull Quality speakers. Plus they look great. I A&B these with my Sony SSK30ED's ($150 on clearance) and the overall sound is GREAT! The Sonys fill in the midrange and the Advents just flood the room with sound. My 100wpc Onkyo 2 channel amp never even gets warm. I will never have to shop for high end speakers again, I used to look around a lot but it seems I cant beat what I have without spending several hundreds and they will still never look as cool as my advents. I just picked up a set of Cerwin Vega big boys 3 ways with 12" woofer. They sound great too except need refoaming, next project underway then i'll give them to these hard rocking kids down the block. I recommend speaker fixing/rebuilding to anyone who is even slighly handy, you will be rewarded greatly. Similar Products Used: KLH, JBL, Wharfedale 8.4, Sony SSK30ED, Polk Audio. |

Strength:
Great 3 way speaker with wonderful details in each area. Very natural sound. The price when new was much less than other high quality speakers. I would put these up against anything B&W makes for under $4000.
Weakness:
very large and heavy- 22.5 inches wide. I bought a pair of advent 6003s 24 years ago. those speakers sounded better to me than walsh ohm, klipsch, thiel. i am sorry i sold these 2 years ago. i sold them for the same price i had paid for them and had refoamed the woofers a year earlier. not bad. i have not been able to find anything comparable to these new. i find some speakers that are clear but no bass. so few speakers have a nice cabinet. these sounded so nice with a jolida tube amp- i have often heard that advents are power hungry. these required a minimum of 10 watts. i drove these nicely for many years with a modest tube amp. the sound was amazingly reallistic with unbelievable bass. the mids were great, the highs phenominal with bone jarring bass. The bass sounded natural and did complete justice to an upright string bass. Vocals, horns, woods all sounded very pleasant. I will continue looking for another pair of these to buy. I sold mine to pay some bills as I was out of work at the time. Similar Products Used: walsh ohm, klipsch, thiel, and bose all listened to. |

I have heard the vintage or classic Advents though it was so far back I cannot make comment, I remember I was very impressed. I am writing about the Advent Legacy II Speakers, circa. 1990. This model is one of the last Advent Legacy II models produced, though I believe that Jensen actually made the Legacy II models during that time period. The specifications of both are very similar.

Strength:
clean, proper sound, great bass which not many other speaker can do like these do it, go really loud without the sound being bad, made in the 70 ties which would mean they are like indestructable, compared to modern speakers, they still sound really good even more, you'll have to pay loads of mony to get the same result as the advents, whatever you give them, they will take it and give it to you like you never heard it before.
Weakness:
at their price point, none, exept maybe that they can actually require alot of power depending of how much bass you want to hear it's simple, really, there's the advent loudspeaker, and there's any other speaker in the world.
Similar Products Used: you could say that i use B&W dm604 S3's but they're alot different then my advents, if you want something to compare: go to a little rock concert |

Strength:
Strengths everthing and you better be strong to lift them. Great longevity like me I guess.
Weakness:
Can't think of any at the moment I have had my set of large Advent Utility cabinets since they originated purchased in 74 they dated 73 on the rear of cabinet. I was a kid of 19 in college then saved some money from the summer, came september and went back to college purchased a complete outfit dual turntable a high-end sony receiver from then. Still have and use the receiver and the Advents. I have always loved the sound. I've listened to many others outfits and it takes a really expensive outfit to surpass and not by much. Within one year both woofer surrounds went to dust. That was back in 88.. I wwent to an authorized Advent repair shop and purchesed replacement speakers and I changed my self. A year later ditto. THis time Advent improved on the quality of foam. It is a lot more rubbery. I think these will last at least 30 years more and its been18 years since 88.. Same great sound as in 74. I'm an old man now and I think I enjopy my music more then ever. I guess I'll be berried with them. I've gone from beatles and Stones and Hendrix to Sinatra ,Tony Bennett and Miles Davis with them. Customer Service customer service is great no matter where you go because they sold so many sets of this speaker . I think it was the best selling quality loudspeaker of all time. It kept the Advent company in the black for many years and Kloss a rich man. Similar Products Used: Never used a product really similar in design. Kloss got it right the first time |

Strength:
2 pairs stacked were as good as speakers costing five times as much in 1973, same as today.
Weakness:
May be hard to find parts in the future. For those with a single pair of Large Advents it is imperative to purchase another pair, stack them with the bottom pair upright and the top pair upsidedown and feed them at least 150W/channel RMS. This will address the comment about subdued midrange with a single pair. Large Advents are a whole different animal when two pair are stacked and fed good clean power.
