Strength:

Great sound

Weakness:

Power Hungry

I got these from my Dad after the foam rotted out. I replaced the foam, and feel that the sound is very close to the original. The driver's spider affects the response of the driver more than the surround, especially for the light foam surrounds used on these drivers.

I run these from a Yamaha RX-450 receiver which some might say is underpowered for these speakers, at 50W/ch. The beauty of the combination of the Yamaha receiver and these speakers is the continuously variable loudness control allows you to power the lows with close to the full power of the amplifier without cranking up the volume too high.

I set the amplifier volume to about halfway (pointing straight up) which is fairly loud in the apartment I'm in, and I turn the loudness until I reach the desired volume. This results in a deep, rich sound, even at relatively quiet listening volumes.

Another observation: I had these sitting on the floor, which is a common placement for this size speaker. I decided I wanted the tweeters at ear level while I'm sitting on the sofa, so I bought a pair of mass-loadable 12" stands. The bass seemed to dissapear because they were no longer shaking the floor and walls... and initially I didn't like the sound. After reading some posts on here, and realizing how power hungry these speakers were in the low end, I used the above trick with the loudness control to give them the low end power they needed. The bass is tight and powerfull now, much better than the muddy sound I was getting with them on the floor.

I also have them set to extended high range, which I think is needed with modern sources (CD/DVD).

Great speakers never die! (if you refoam them every 15 years :) )

Strength:

Nice tight bass. Smooth tweeter.

Weakness:

Needs Power!!

I'm fairly new to the realm of "Audiophilism". I purchased these speakers for $10.00 Canadian at a thrift store. The cabinets are pecan colored walnut with beveled edges and are in cherry condition (a few faint scratches noticed up close/6 inches). The grills are mint. Sounds to good to be true, but of course the foam was rotted. Off to the speaker tech and two newly foamed speakers. I've read reviews on how refoaming can change the quality of sound in these speakers, but I was just being born when they were manufactured so how would I know how they sounded originally (or care for that matter)!! I do know that I am impressed with how tight and smooth these speakers sound. After a total of $150.00 Canadian, I have a classic piece of history.

Strength:

Ausome sound. Great Base. Good highs.

Weakness:

_NeEdS PoWeR!_ These babys need alot of power (100watt amp or more) to run the well. At high volumes get a little "Shouty"

Great speaker, and for the price i payed for them, im very happy. If you find a pare of these speakers CHECK THE WOOFER! the outer rubber gets dryed out very easly, I had to replace mine but work better then they ever did. Other then that there just a plane old great speaker.

Strength:

good highs and bass

Weakness:

weak midrange

I have owned a pair of Advents for 23 years now. Purchased them new in 1978. They are great speakers for highs and bass. They make music sound "live". But for detailed midrange, forget about it. I thought these did a good job with midrange until I purchased some B&W speakers. They are very detailed and showed me what I was missing with the Advents. Having said that, the Advents are wonderful speakers for being over 20 years old and I still love to listen to them.

Strength:

price, 2-way design, walnut enclosure, 70's indestructability

Weakness:

outdated drivers/odd frame

I just inheritated these 1975 classics like thousands of other people and i need some guidance as the foam surrounds
are gone and the drivers are toast as well. Is is possible to replace the drivers with something else? Supposedly they are an odd cast/driver combination which makes it difficult to upgrade. I'm wondering if it would be cost effective to attempt to put in new woofers or just use that cash for new speakers all together. If anyone knows of a driver that fits the cut-out of this speaker are knows if you have to tweak the crossover to make the necessary adjustments please post on this site asap. Ideally i would like to use a rubber surround driver but am uncertain as to how to go about it or where to purchase it.Thanks to anybody that can help me out.

I have been using a pair of New Advent Loudspeakers in the pecan wood cabinets for about 20 years. Everytime I go to the hi-fi stores to audition new speakers to upgrade my system, then come home and listen to my Advents, I think they sound better than most of the speakers I audition. I realize there have been great changes in speaker technology over the past 20 years, but until I get into the really pricey area of speakers, I think my old Advents hold their own with most I have heard. When these speakers were made in the mid-70's, they were priced at $150 each and were touted by Advent to be as good or better than any speaker at any price. They are still giving me a lot of pleasure after 20 years. I wonder if anyone else is still listening to the Advent Loudspeaker.

I am happy to see another person out there still enjoyingtheir Advent speakers. Henry Kloss who owned & ran Advent
way back when knew how to design a high performance 2-way
speaker with an octave to octave tonal balance. They were
a good value for the money spent. I own 6 pair of speakers.
Two pair are Advents. I own the Advent 1's purchased in 1978 for $250.95 in the beautiful walnut cabinets. The Advent 1's used the same 10" acoustic suspension woofer
and 1-3/8 rolled ring dome tweeter in a smaller cabinet-22"
tall x 13-1/4 wide x 9-1/4 deep. Bass response is 2-1/2 db
higher than it"s big brother, goes down to 43 hz.I purchased the classic venerable New Advent Loudspeaker in
1980, it is also in the beautiful walnut wood cabinets.
They cost $396.90. Dimensions are 26" tall x 14-1/8" wide
x 1-1/2" deep. Bass response goes down to 30 hz. I really
love the sound of these old dogs, they can still hunt! I
have the Advents stacked with the Advent 1's inverted so
the tweeters are together with the large Advents, this is
something the local dealer used to do way back when.I am
running 5 sets of speakers through a speaker switch selector. My room is 30'x30', I have a pair of 10" 3-way
JBL LX-55's with titanium tweeters and I have a pair of
1977 Bose 301's flying a little over six feet in the air,
with a pair of Optimus Pro LX-5's with the dipolar Linaeum
tweeters sitting on top of the 301's. This flying combo
produces some really spacious omnidirectional sound, I also
am advocate of the use of equalizers, I am using an Alesis
1/3 octave eq, it really makes these puppies sing. I love
to listen to Stevie Ray & Jimmy Lee Vaughan,Dwight Yoakam,
Buck Owens, George Jones etc. through this system. The
Advents aren't perfect but hey what is, you don't have to
spend mega-bucks to get good sound. It all boils down to
personal preference and I am happy with what I have.

I've had these speakers for over twenty years, purchased them in 1977!! They still sound great. The foam edge on the drivers rotted about nine years ago. I had the foam replaced and they've been as good as new. The cabinets have shown their age with some small scratches and dents, but otherwise still beautiful to look at. I am planning to purchase a home theater speaker system for the family room so I have been auditioning many speaker systems. I agree with David, they still sound as good as other speakers today, I not giving my Advents up. They're going in the den for my own private listening pleasure. They will probably last another twenty years.

Strength:

take a lickin and keep on tickin

Weakness:

hard to find considering its origin price

Replying to Peter Campbells post;the original large advents and the new advents used a 10inch woofer. This low end driver was so snug in this cabinet that it would be almost impossible to put in a 12inch woofer.Peter what brand and model woofer did you replace this with? What did you use to tweek the outdated crossover? If you compromised the crossover why not change the tweeter? As far as having the woofer surrounds replaced it is well worth the investment and at a much cheaper cost than replacing the drivers.I agree that these speakers can give many of todays $1500 speakers a match for their money as they are! Peter I question your post.....you leave to many questions and to little stars!!!

Strength:

Not overly bright, great low frequency extension, classic design, able to absorb a lot of power without apparent strain.

Weakness:

None

Judging by the other reviews I must be a very lucky guy indeed. I just bought a pair of near mint condition original Advent Loudspeakers. The cabinets have a few blemishes, the grille is perfect and so are the drivers!
This guy sold them to me for $75 the pair. I tested them with an APT Holman preamp, a Yamaha M-1000U (365w/ch at .oo3thd)amp, and a Rotel CD-975BX CD player. They sounded awesome with all kinds of music. I used some South American folk music to test the low end but the music never broke up. I think these must be the best looking 20 yr Advents around. The only problem I could detect is the toggle switch in the back does not switch between normal, decrease and extended tweeter settings anymore. As far as I can tell both are stuck on normal. I will open it soon to clean the contacts or have the switch fixed as I'm realizing these speakers might really be a collector's item.
If anyone has a copy of the original manual I'm willing to pay for a copy as well as any reviews of the speaker.
Please disregard the model year as this site would not let me select anything before '95.
