Hi, Back again! [It's the 3:rd time so I may bias the rating (though it's been a 5-star from the rest aswell), but the speakers are evolving you see. And besides: Tho opinion is just mine (all mine...)]
Have - since last time - had the chance to listen to the speakers with better stands (ProJect3) and better amplification (Myryad), and they responds eagerly.
The soundstage grows accordingly, and not just sideways. [Can anyone explane to how the soundstage can be wider than the distance between the speakers? And the depth / hight thing? Well, I can also hear it; but how does it work? Never the less, it carries you away when you close your eyes.]
The Bass does also benefit from good amplification, getting tigter and meatier (though I'm a vegetarian, so...). Not that you can get an "eartquake" from a 6" membrane; but you get a very present bass whenever there is any in the sourse. [And there is no bass when there shan't be any, contrary to many cheep floorstanders.] Music like Massive Attack or Tricky is highly enjoyable though their heavy reliance on bass. Personally I easily exchange the physic bass for the kind of rapid and spacious bass speakers like theese give.
The resolution had increased, but that comes from the amp. But it is a nice thing that the speaker responds to better electronics (such as their last single ;-) ) I mean, a speaker that sounds nice and "hi-fi" with cheap electronics does not always sounds excellent and Hi-Fi with decent (enough excellent and Hi-Fi) electronics. And just because speakers are small they don't have to sound blurred when played loud with complex music: and thease certainly don't! (If you have the amp.) And just because they can play loud, you don't have to stand abscent bass and highs at low volumes: and thease certainly don't. So, it's not only that they sound good, they sound good at the volume of your choise.
Have had a split opinion between these and the Dynaudio before, but I don't think one benefit anything to spend twice the sum on the Dynaudio (Audience 40 or 50). And for one thing, if you choose the Dynaudio you loose all the engageing vividness that you can have with theese speakers.

Strength:

Fabulous reproduction of piano, both solo and with chamber or orchestral accompaniment

Weakness:

Not as flash looking as some other brands

I'm a pianist and not an audiophile... for me, these speakers provide an accurate reproduction of a piano sound. They also do a quite good harpsichord !!!

Apart from overall musicality, I find the following features really easy on my ears...
(i) They do not get 'confused' when the piano is being accompanied by different instruments (such as orchestral brass), at the same pitch - ie. it's possible to hear each instrument quite clearly.
(ii) They communicate musical nuance very well
(iii) They don't get 'confused' with a number of heavily syncopated rhythms occurring in different instruments at the same time (ie. in the music of Bartok or Stravinsky).

I use these speakers with a NAD 340 amp and a Cambridge Audio D500 CD player.

Similar Products Used:

Similarly priced speakers from B&W, Magnat, Castle, etc.
