Strength:
Have enjoyed the 605As since 1960. Built the corner encloses to the Altec specs. as back then the corner design was considered best. Have had many amplification systems and speaker configurations since; running 11.2 speaker sound on my main system now. The Altecs are in the "2 channel stereo" configuration, enough said. Weakness:
I had to have one re-conned back in 1979; my fault for neglecting the yearly rotation. I have since religiously rotated every year. Lost cabinet specs; wish I still had them. Price Paid: $150 each
Purchased: New
Model Year: 1960

Strength:
Super Efficency
Weakness:
Only the level control and only one of them. Purchased in the early 1971 and installed in a 9 cubic foot bass relex enclosure. They were my gold standard until the early 80's when I discovered the Klipsch Line. My Klipshorn best the 604Es by a little. My Forte's don't quite match the Altec 604E's in the bass region. My ElectroVoice lack the mid range punch of either the Horn or the Altec's. Have struggled with noisy tweeter level control on one of the pair. Prices have risen sharply on several attempts to bid at EBAY Similar Products Used: Electrovoice 12trx, Klipshorn, Klipsch Forte, and Klipsch Hersey |

I traded a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls to my best friend for these Altec studio monitors. The driver consists of a mating of the 416 woofer with the 806 high frequency driver, the 806 is mounted behind the woofer and it's horn passes through the woofer's pole piece and terminates in a multi-cell structure. The cabinets are walnut veneered, about 7 cubic feet and vented. Efficiency is very high, about 98db. These were made in the mid 1960s and put to shame to chinless audiophile speakers of today. Bass is very clean and dynamic and goes very low with great impact, they can shake the house driven by 30 watts of tube power. Midrange is clean and lifelike, though not with the razor clarity of VOTs that crossover 1000 hz lower, highs are clean and lifelike. In summary CLEAN and powerfull sums these babies up, music just flows from them with no effort or strain, these are speakers for music lovers, great for SET fans too. Prices on the old alnico Altec Duplexes (604 and 605) are going up, get 'em now. Are they better than Cornwalls? I think so but my friend doesn't, both are great speakers. |

Strength:
superb dynamics, effortless reproduction
Weakness:
none I was fortunate to come across a pair of 605A drivers around 10yrs. ago, at that time an audio associate had just installed the "new-style" HF diapgram, and "new" cone-material. The cabinets constructed for these are 9cu' bass-reflex Mahagony-veneer. What more can I say about these than what Tom relates in His previous review? The "old boy's" just seem to get better through the years. What they will do with even 1/2 of a watt is astounding. No compression as the volume is turned-up, just more and more effortless music. Yes they are big, they take up room, and my Wife might look at them and sigh occasionly, but you can have your "modern" sub-sat "Home Theatre" systems, once you hear quality old systems such as the Altecs, old JBL, Electro-Voice, and Klipsch, and you truly love music, you'll never be satisfied with "modern" equipment Similar Products Used: JBL4312, Two-way corner Altec's |
