I've had my Slant 6's for around two years now and am very pleased with their performance. I'm currently using them in a bi-amped configuration with two Kinergetics KBA-380 amps in a Hometheater system using the Apogee LCR center and a pair of Ribbon monitors in the rear powered by a Chiro C-200. Bass is provided by a Chiro Mesa C-150 sub. The only problem I'm having is that I was told if you blow a speaker or need a part for your Apogee speakers you might as well throw them in the trash because ADS isn't providing any replacement parts at this time. This is bad news. In the past I've had a ribbon blow in my LCR while under warranty and actually had a semi hard time getting it replaced. This was while Apogee was still in business. This speaker was not blown due to over driving or any other misuse. All I did was power up my system and noticed their was nothing coming from the ribbon. They did replace it. If you have any info regarding replacemant parts for these speakers please forward this info to me. Thanks

I have owned my slant 6's for about 2 1/2-3 years now. Origionally they weremated to Argon amp and preamp, with PS audio D/A converter and Proceed 2.
These are by far the best speakers I have ever owned before. The whole system
is bi wired and linked together by a local manufacturer R/C audio. Maybe something people haven't tried is this... my image is a little cofined due to the nature of the smaller ribbon but, with the assistance of 4 Room tunes and corner tunes the image is magnificent! It is deep and wide. This being from a Yamaha integrated amp and a Sony X77ES Cd. The sound can be a little less hard
with a different amp (tube or Carver) but you can't beat the image or the resolution from these speakers.

I always have been a critical listener. Choosing the right loudspeaker has a tremendous effect on how your whole audio system will sound. I have been using Apogee speaker for some time now. I currently have the stages, but previously did audition on the Slant 6. Personally, I feels that the Slant 6 is an excellent sounding speakers. It has superd transparency, that can compete with the most expensive speakers available. The midrange is very natural accompanied with a good soundstage width and depth. Now, that Apogees are no longer available, I had a hard time searching for other planars that sounds like the Apogees. I tried listening to the Magnepans, but they don't have the magic treble and midrange Apogee speakers offer. It is hard for my ears to adapt to other brand of speakers, after listening to Apogee for a couple of years. For the sound, it is highly addictive and irreplacable.

I just auditioned a pair of used Slant 6's from a gent nearby who has them for sale in preparation for a move. (It is currently listed in another online site.) The units had been upgraded with Dynaudio woofers, but I'm not sure if the application was a correct match or not. I listened for about an hour on rock, folk, classical, and jazz CD's, all fairly recent and well recorded. The gear was a Sony ES (not sure which) single CD, Conrad Johnson pre, and Onkyo power amp, bi-wired with regular Monster-type pairs. The level varied from medium to very loud, which may be more than these speakers are intended for.
I had been prepared for some brightness by the April '97 Stereophile "Recommended Components" listing, which put it in the "B" category (as good as it gets for the common folk). I have always had a high hearing range (tested up to 19K in college - used to hear ultrasonic burglar alarms and TV "whine", now hear around 16), and am fairly sensitive to high frequency distortion or harshness. I know many people have lower high end limits.

The reason for all this is that my experience with these speakers was different than the other reviews here. I was ready to take such an esteemed product home, being so convenient and all. However, I was put off by what became increasingly harsh brightness, and a seeming disconnect between the upper treble and what felt like excellent midrange and bass (with woofer switch on "normal".) The "pinpoint" image described by another reviewer became more of a prison-like feeling for me, as I found any movement away from the sweet spot caused the treble to literally disappear. The first time I stood up, I thought the ribbon had blown! I was actually relieved to find that it was just this hyper-limited dispersion pattern.

I know the digital path could account for some of the harshness problem, and that power may also affect the image, but I could not see myself being happy with them. I hope that this was an unusual combination of ears, gear, room (it seemed to small for such units)and possibly modifications, for it appears that many other people are quite pleased with them! (In general, I heard very good resolution, soundstage, and balance.) Another drawback for me was the size (52" high) and looks, which won't win any decor awards. The result for me was that I'm now suspicious of ribbon hybrids, as well as of the authoritativeness of Stereophile Magazine reviewers, some of whose other choices also puzzle me. This, combined with their orphan status, unfortunately makes these speakers a risky proposition in my view.

These speakers have very sweet, smooth mid range and excellent soundstage. However, image is not as good as my other pair of B&W 804. It can be my pre-amp and amp. (Adcom GTP600 and Adcom amp. I am thinking upgrade the preamp and amp.) I use slant 6 with a subwofer. The overall sound quality is better than B&W 804. Does anyone have any experiences with these slant 6 in Home Theater setup?

This is one of the best products I have ever heard. You hear treble and midrange detail and transperancy like
never before. You should match the speaker with a
subwoofer. The Vifa woofer in the speaker is
excellent--and I mean excellent. However, it does
not go as low as some people might want. Though
this product is not made anymore and Apogee is
out of business. It is a product worth looking
for if in mint condition.

Nice top to bottom coherence. Very quick and transparent sounding midrange and treble. Bass has the slam but lacks extension. Highly recommended.

I bought my Slant 6's in 1995. I have used them with a variety of equipment, but currently use them with a DVD player->CAL Sigma tubed D/A converter->homemade preamp-> Marantz 250 power amp (c. 1973). These speakers are very component sensitive, and the better the source, the better their performance.
I find the imaging of long ribbon tweeters to be different from dome tweeters in that the imaging is less pin-point, but more realistic. Pin-point imaging, while pleasing, is not natural in most concert halls. The sound emanating from my Apogees takes me closer to the sound of real music than most speakers I've auditioned. Vocals, particularly, can be uncannily realistic.
These can be very difficult speakers to place. In my current place, I have yet to find the ideal spot due to size/sound considerations.
Bass is quite deep, but could have better definition when compared to similarly priced B&Ws.
In the final analysis, the positive aspects of this speaker completely swamp the admittedly troublesome negative aspects. I very highly recommend them, particularly at the low cost when purchased over e-bay. Now if I could only afford better amplification!
5 stars for value at current e-bay cost
5 stars for sound in it's class
