Strength:

I liked the sound stage very well, the tweeters where very accurate on some music and some got to be to bright, almost shrill, the PRICE!!

Weakness:

The Bass got boomy at mid/high volumes, ported box, small driver, would be expected to happen in about any brand

I bought 4 of these speakers on U-bid for a whole 27 dollars apiece!! They are for my brother in laws system. I listened to them on my 2095 Yamaha. I really was impressed with these speakers. These speakers are the 628M not 627. Next to my NHT VT-2 I would give them 2 stars, but for the price I will rate them as 4. If it was not for the boomy bass I would give them 5 stars. A sub is a must with these little giants!! These speakers are good enough (with a sub) to make me wonder why I paid so much for the NHT!!!

Strength:

Price; decent soundstage and reasonable depth for the $$

Weakness:

A sometimes 'muddy' bass response; depending on the music, the tweeter may sound bit shrill.

As did Scott in the review before me, I am reviewing another Aura speaker: the LSW-628M, which I take to mean Line Source Wide 628 Monopole. The speaker is front-ported, and has a 6.5" mid/woofer and a monopole linaeum tweeter. Each cabinet weighs 29 pounds, and works best on stands placed about a foot away from the wall. I bought this pair at U-bid for $27.00 each. With shipping, the total cost came to just under a hundred. I believe these speakers are a fine value for the money. After an initial break-in period of 20 hours or so, I noticed a distinct ' warming' of the Aura's tone. To me., they sound best for jazz and acoustic music - certain R&R sounds fine too - I don't know that I would like rap or hip-hop on these, and classical depends on the complexity of the piece. In short, their price makes them an out-standing value, despite what short-comings they may have. I have experienced no listening fatigue from these speakers. They were broken in using an Adcom GFA-535 power amp and GTP-400 tuner/preamp. I use a Denon DCD-620 CD player, and a Rotel RP-560 turntable. I am currently using a recently purchased Vintage Marantz 2235B to drive the Auras, and I believe this has improved the sound considerably over theAdcoms. For under a $100 these speakers would be nice to stockpile. My lastspeakers of note were the (in)famous Dahlquist DQ-20s, which produced had wonderful imaging and a huge sound-stage- but they cost $2,000- the Auras are a cup of coffee by comparison.

Acutally, I'm reviewing the LSW828M model - which has an 8" woofer, but is otherwise similar. (This model wasn't on the front sheet). My guess is it's being closed out, as it's on uBid, but not in current catalogs.

This certainly made it an excellent bargain for me - I ended up paying $57/speaker - for this price, I don't think I can get a better deal. The tweeter units deliver amazing realism and saturation. The bass units are a little boomy, and perhaps less distinct than I'd like -I turned the bass level down a bit on my amplifier. This could be the (relative)low power of my amp (a Harman/Kardon AVR40).

Let's just say my next purchase will be a subwoofer to compensate for my system's inefficiencies - overall, I am really enjoying this purchase.

Strength:

Price Point, quality of workmanship, quality of drivers, quality of components, quality of shipping containers, crisp clean sound delivered very accurately...

Weakness:

None at this pricepoint...

I am reviewing the TOWER model of this speaker... the LST-627s... Made in the USA...

Cabinet quality: perfect for a speaker in the $500-1000 range... gold banana connectors, nice black finish, very non-offending design... neutral, non descript...

Sound quality: shockingly crisp and absolutely perfect for a Home Theatre setup... I use the Aura Center Speaker for the center and the same towers for my surrounds... they were so inexpensive, I thought, why not?

I highly recommend Aura products...

Strength:

Tight, accurate bass coupled with clean highs. The tweeter isn't "too hot" ...or should I say overemphasized. Vocals are also clean and tight.

Weakness:

None...at least up to this point.

I also am reviewing another model (LSW-828M).I purchased mine from ubid three weeks ago for $47 each($94/pair) and I consider them an absolute steal. In fact, I originally bought a pair for my daughter for X-mas and I decided to get another pair for my wife and me without even hearing them. I knew of Aura's reputation in car audio so I figured (at these prices)that I couldn't go wrong. Well, I've been astounded by their tight accurate sound so I decided to make them my primary speakers and demote my dbx system to surround duty. The dbx's are also half the size of these Aura's so that had something to do with my decision. I now plan on getting Aura's Center Channel speaker and Powered Sub for my home theater. I was surprised to hear someone mention boomy bass because the first thing I noticed was tight, accurate bass from these speakers...followed closely by the clean highs.Maybe speaker placement is the problem. Just a guess. I kinda hate to give my daughter her pair because I'm not sure a 14 year old deserves a speaker this good. I would've died to get speakers like this at that age.

I also own a dbx sub/sat system purchased from the DAK Co.(now defunct). These speakers beat out top-line sub/sat systems from Bose,Polk,Yamaha and Cambridge Soundworks in a double blind test back in the early 90's.

Strength:

build quality, full midrange sound with a good soundstage.

Weakness:

tweeter highs not as crisp and detailed as I would like; muddy sound sometimes.

I agree with all the previous reviews. I am a college student living in a fairly small apartment. I use these speakers with an Onkyo TX-DS474, and a little JBL 8" 80-watt powered sub. They sound decent with these components, but still not as bright as I would like it. I also tested these speakers connected to a Harmon Kardon AR45 and B&W 6" 2-ways. The Auras really couldn't compete with the B&W's, but I guess I can't really complain about the Auras for $27 each. I assume 55w per channel with the Onkyo isn't really enough to make these speakers come alive. I think I really need an adequate amp to drive these. I listen to all kinds of music, and found them to be best for easy listening and some R&B, but I find them coming up short with Rap and anything that needs a fuller sound, low end bass, and bright highs. Overall, a great value for a budget system.

This bookshelf speaker has the following characteristics: crossover woofer to tweeter 2.2Khz, frequency response 40-20Khz, sensitivity 88db, 6 Ohms, 10-125W power handling, magnetic shielding (all their linesource line-up), 13lbs (5.9Kg), 14" X 8" X 9.25", and comes only in black woodgrain. The amazing part is that it goes lower than the OPTIMUS PRO-LX8 with a smaller woofer (clean). The tweeter is smooth with a very very touch of brightness (tested on a Pioneer 906S with MIT cables and a Pioneer Laser Disc, can't remember the model). This speaker imaged very well and had a pretty deep soundstage. This thing works very well with their sub and made a very good HT setup. This is definately a more refined version upgrade of the OPTIMUS PRO-X77 & PRO-X88AV with the larger woofer (clean sound across the board) making this easier to match with a woofer. Unfortunately couldn't hear to much music on this other than the sounds they had on the TOP GUN LD (Kenny Loggins sounded very well in the opening scenes) but can't really tell you if this would be for hard rock or rap but it would most likely need a sub to hit the lower octave. I was really impressed with this mighty bookshelf and I think you should consider this as well if you come across it.

Strength:

Simply, put great sound for the money!

Weakness:

Missing some mid-qualities

Aura Model LSW 628 M

This is one GREAT speaker for the money. If you can find a pair, buy them!

I purchased these for my workshop, thinking if they worked at all they would be well suited for that purpose. WHAT A SURPRISE!

I decided to use them temporarily while I was waiting for the drivers for my Duntech Sovereign 2001's to be shipped & then installed. A very worthwhile update, I might add. About a $4,000 upgrade.

Back to the Aura's. I decided to use these in my primary listening room, while I was waiting. Boy did I ever get a big surprise! I found them very easy to listen to for long periods of time. Highs that really are articulate & delicate like the much higher priced speakers. Admittedly anything connected to the electronics I have should sound decent, but I found myself enjoying the sound, not just tolerating it the way I had thought would be the case.

Simply put the best audio-bargin I have ever purchased.

Equipment used:

EAD T-1000 transport, EAD DSP 7000 Mk III balanced, Jeff Rowland Consummate pre-amp, Jeff Rowland Model 7 mono blocks, with Magnan Vi interconnects, Goertz AG 2 speaker cable, Cardas Lightning Digital cable. & The part that really worked well with the Aura's a Genesis 900 sub-woofer.

I must say I have more than got my money's worth!

Strength:

For the price you pay EVERYTHING is a strength

Weakness:

Larger size cabinet for a sat / sub system

This is a followup on my previous review.

It's been a few hundred hours of listening now. The speakers are broken in and I had to come here and repeat what I said in my other post.

If you get the LSW628 Aura's (which give you "slightly" better midrange than the LSW828) and add a 10" powered sub ( such as the great KEF Coda S at Ubid) you will have a speaker system with EXCELLENT fit and finish that can compete with speakers far up to the 1000 dollar price range.

The imagery of the speakers as time goes on only improves.
The overall soundstage has depth that can overwhelm the listener at times. Closing your eyes you can actually start to hear the musicians almost 3 dimensionally.

I'm not saying these are the best speakers ever made. Or that you can't maybe find speakers you will like more.

What I am saying is hands down "for the price" there is no better speaker available period, end of contest, game over.

If I had sat in a sound room at my local audiophile stereo showroom and heard the Aura's with the KEF powered sub I would have been willing to lay out up 3 times what I paid or more.

To pay twice what I paid I would have considered it a great deal to brag about.

But to get this setup for 3 hundred dollars or less is the out and out all time most outstanding deal I have ever come across.

This says a lot being that I NEVER am willing to pay retail for anything.

I spend more time writing letters of complaint to companies for things I am unhappy with. It is refreshing to be able to come here and write to all of you and have nothing but praise for a purchase.

27 dollars plus shipping = about 100 bucks total cost at Ubid.

Once again I will say "Best damn 27 bucks" I ever spent"

I must agree with the previous reviewers. I have the LSW-627M's and they are a steal. Wish i could buy a few more pair but Aura Systems has divested their sound division to a new company and they haven't responded to my inquiries.
These speakers need a decent sub to complement them and the you are set. For under $400 total you can have a speaker system that rivals anything at ~$1000 or so. Great soundstage, excellent build quality and the shipping/packing materials are the best I have ever seen. A real bargain!!!
