Setting them up Let me start off by saying that these speakers are nothing short of amazing! I've had these speakers for a couple of months now and every time I listen I'm blown away. I'm running them with an all BAT system (VK-60SE, VK-50SE, and VK-D5SE) and Cardas Golden Reference wiring all around. For the last two years I've enjoyed my music through a pair of Hales T-8 loudspeakers (another great sounding speaker) and just recently replaced them with the Duos. I'm sure everyone has read the Avantegarde two page ad in Stereophile every month. The ad is very accurate. The Duos are transparent, extremely dynamic, incredibly fast, and image as good as any speaker that I've heard. The speed and dynamics of the Duos are addicting to the point that it causes a rush of emotion when listening to music that you truly love. Even old crappy sounding CD's from the 70's or 80's seem to come to life through the Duos. It's like what one of the other reviewers stated, that you have an emotional withdrawal when you stop listening to them. Now, I know that everyone's musical perceptions and tastes are different but I am perplexed over some of the reviews I've read on this site regarding this line of speakers. These speakers can sound awful if not properly set up. What makes it worse is that these speakers are very difficult and tedious to set up. A friend of mine who owns a high-end shop took four months to get his Unos to sound good. For those of you who are not familiar with these speakers, they have jumpers between each horn and subwoofer. The jumpers and the speaker cable coming off the amp can be wired in several different ways. What makes it confusing is that the way Avantegarde tells you to wire the speakers in their manual is not the preferred way. (Avantegarde-USA is currently re-writing the manual). In addition, the subwoofers have a crossover adjustment and subwoofer volume control that can make the speakers sound rich & warm or more dynamic. All of the adjustments need to be tailored to the room the speakers are in. In my opinion, the Avantegarde line of speakers needs to be driven by tubes. They just do not sound as good with solid state. If properly set up and fed with good electronics this speaker will take you to audio heaven! Enjoy! Similar Products Used: Unos |

Strength:
Staging and musical timbre. And while unique in design, they are a piece of modern art that so far everyone visiting has liked. Simply outstanding. Turn the lights out and you will not locate the speaker as a source - just music portrayed in space with an incredibly stable image. Instruments and voices have a timbre that conveys nuances that are rare. Add to this the ability to effortlessly move from quiet detail to full dynamics and this is simply one of the best all around speakers for conveying music emotionally that I have ever listened to. Owners manual Too many people have heard these speakers not properly setup or setup with equipment that does not match very well. I am guilty of it too, and almost gave up on these marvelous speakers. When following the setup instructions, I listened and within minutes found the sound extremely fatiguing. I setup initially with an ARC VT200 amp and ARC Ref 2 preamp. Talk about bad system matching. The Audio Research equipment is wonderful, just not with the Avantgarde speakers. I then pulled out a Viva Sintesi integrated 15 watt SET amp and was amazed. There was incredible bass that was not there at all with the ARC equipment, beautiful mids, but still something was a tad fatiguing in the highs. I called my Avantgarde guru and he told me I still had the speakers improperly wired. After re-wiring, I turned the system back on and heard what I was supposed to be hearing... music the way if should be heard. These are some of the best speakers out there at any price... but only when setup properly. |

I first heard of this horn speaker was a year ago in LA audio show, even though it was in a small room, this speaker still sound very natural and transparent. I was impressed even though it was a very poor listening environment. I guess in the audio show, the dealer mainly want the media exposure rather than allowing serious listening. A month ago, I had another chance listening to this speaker again, this time, it was in a audio shop. The mid and upper range simply sound incredible. Ultra fast and very dynamic. The bass sound came from the subs which was powerful but "relatively" not as transparent and fast as the mid and upper range. Since the bass sound is heavily related to room acoustic, positioning and set up, it's hard and unfair to make further comment. I believe this speaker has a huge potential. Is anybody out there has experience with Avantgarde's product, I would love to hear. |

highly sensitive to noise from components or power source. I have lived with the Avantgarde Horns (2.1) for nearly a year powered by Cary 300B monoblocks and I am simply thrilled everytime I listen. I have become addicted to the sound of this system to such an extent that I experience an emotional withdrawal when traveling for more than couple days. Similar Products Used: None |

Looks
Weakness:
Look (while I like them now, it is a bold and daring look that may not be able to prove itself over time). Thin and almost sterile presentation I had the speakers delivered and setup by the dealer. He did a most professional and superb job setting the units up and fine tuning the speakers i.e. placement/toe-in. The electronics used were the oh so sweet Sony SCD-1 with the Ortho Spectrum Analog Reconstructor, FIM cabling(speaker and power cords (the power cords to the Duos were NOT FIM)), the amps and preamp were Tube Research Labs. Right away I could tell that some of weight of the singer was missing. In this case the singer was Diana Krall. The gear I employ has no problem conveying weight, so to the speakers we look. I say we because there was a total of 4 setting the units up and listening. A feeling of thin, lifeless-ness comes to mind. We tried re-wiring with the amps diving the midrange directly. The rewire trick seemed to help a little, but it was not enough. In stark contrast the Talon Audio Khourus which I have owned for some time has much more weight and a since of presence the Duos just seems to lack. Now the duo is DYNAMIC, but it is like the difference between an exquisite master painting, and looking out of a window at the same view. The painting though accurately portraying all in the scene is 2 dimensional and life-less, the WINDOW scene on the other hand allows you to see the motion the dynamics of life and the odors of the outdoor scene. Ok, I know I may have waxed on poetic, but I am trying with words to convey a feeling of some nearly ineffable thing which seemed to be missing with this speaker. I think people are getting caught up by the sheer dynamics of this speaker. Having said all that I will say I would take them over the $85K Dynaudio Evidences I just auditioned...but that's and entirely different story.
