Strength:
Great balance from bass to treble. Surprisingly low and tight bass for driver size.Smooth, detailed midrange.Dynamic enough to sound great with movies. Absolutely gorgeous speaker in Rosenut. Very revealing of source material.
Weakness:
Long break in period. Need alot of good amplification. Grill alters treble clarity Decided to upgrade from my Paradigm Moniter7s after 8 years.Began with Paradigm 60's and 80's and a pair of comparable Mission speakers(shipped in from Atlanta by Mission distributer for my audition ay his cost)in a sound room at Modern Music with very high end equipment and all the speakers volume balanced. After four hours listening to selections from my personal music collection I decided that I liked the treble/mid of the Paradigms over the Missions and the bass of the Missions over the Paradigms. I have a friend who had recently purchased a pair of B&W 603s that were now broken in and ready for a serious listen.(His audition of my Paradigms resulted in his upgrade from JBLs)After many hours of critical listening(in his homewith spl meter volume matched)we decided that we preferred the bass and treble of the Paradigms over the B&Ws but the B&Ws sounded much better in the midrange to us. I was at the compromise stage due to my budget. I decided to give the B&W 604s a store audition in the search for better bass. I listened to 604s, 603s, an CDM7s and 9s but still hadn't heard THAT SOUND at a price I could afford. The salesman suggested I listen to the new CM4s which had an aluminum bass driver and Nautulis type tweeter. I found it! Great balanced speaker for music and movies. Strength:
Wonderful sound and sound staging to die for.
Weakness:
Needs a little volume to bring out the full character, but I wonder if my mid level receiver is more to blame for this - tweaking just a little treble seems to help. Sorry, but I am writing for the CM2s which for some odd reason do not have a space here. I A-B'ed the CM2. CM4 and CMD-7NT for an entire day and went with the CM2s plus an ASW650 subwoofer. I thought the CM2s sounded better than the CM4s and the store rep told me I was probably hearing the kevlar woofer in the CM2 vs and aluminum woofer in the CM4s. He told me every single person who took home the CM4s for a try out brought them back and he thinks it is due to the woofer issue. Of course the 7NTs were amazing, but guess what. Listen to a recording with a solo violin and only the CM2s brought out the full mid range to the point where you could really hear the "violin-ness" in the recording. It was amazing. There is something in that certain mid range area that is happening with the CM2s. Similar Products Used: Tannoy PBM 6.5s? |

Weakness:
Very long burn-in I have used my CM 4's for 3 months and probably listened for approximately 150 hours on modest volumes, mostly classical music. I bought them based on one (too) short listenting period in the shop. The first weeks I was very, very dissappointed with the sound: lean and sharp and hurting my ears. This improved gradually, but I am still not competely happy (who is ?) .Especially the upper midrange, certainly with piano is often too sharp. My other equipment should be good enough: Marantz CD 17 MK II, Bryston BP 20 and 4BST Amp.. Can I expect further improvement or are the CM4's simply a bit too sharp in the upper midrange ? If no further improvement occurs I can only rate these speakers as average. |

Strength:
Great bass, large soundstage
Weakness:
placement is tricky I have only been an owner of these speakers for a little over a month and so far am fairly pleased. They have terrific bass, contrary to what some of the other reviewers have said, and also have a great soundstage. Mid's are not as impressive, but the speakers are only now starting to break in. They DO require being placed somewhat further from the wall and I have listened to them with slight toe-in for the best sound IMHO. Anyway, they sounds great, and I feel they are also some of the best looking speakers on the market. I also read the UK reviews and faltered at purchasing them, but in the end, it's really the ears that make the final review anyway, right? Looks Nice
Weakness:
Did not fit into our listening room Well after 12 Wonderful years of listening to my down the road Ebay sold Mission 765's...I set out on my quest to do better in sight and sound I was ready to make the move ,just got tired of my Missions I guess!!! Yikes indeed... Missions being my first love was not even available to audition and from what I could do with my detective work, Denon the US Distributor for Mission was no help in finding a pair of 775's.. Or even a dealer within the Mid West...So I ventured on now my locale makes this journey hard for me, but I had some pleasant and some unpleasant sounds hit my ear drums...And in the end of this journey of Hundreds of miles on my car any many many hours, my wallet talked to me = was it the Nautilus 804's or the CM4's...After more audtioning of others the CM's beat the wallet,A Pair in Get this,in Black Ash finish never before available now reside in the space of the Missions....Be patient it is the bloody break period in I told Myself,as I serched the cartons for the band aids for my bleeding ears, they must come with band aids...But they have gotten a tad bit better over the months!! Plus I Updated my Powwer Plant to A New Integra DTR Series, that also helped.. But my dealer was worried he was going to get a malpractice suit and I have been worried that the price of band aids could out weigh the up grade price to the Natulis 804's...Natulis 804's on the way...If your not fussy about sound at all these are great but if you plan to live with them for years you may go deaf.. Once I got them into my living space as you can tell they did NOT do well at all the 804's are WONDERFUL after borrwing a pair from the showroom... A Lesson to all make sure you can work with your dealer to do this of you'll be sorry!!! And Never buy Speakers on Ebay that you have never heard...Any one need a few boxes of band aids!!!And do gag your wallet when shopping........... Similar Products Used: Road Tested... Strength:
In my opinion, the best match for my A3 system. Great rhythm and timing. They can play any music exceptionally well.
Weakness:
If you are not at eye height with the speakers, the bass boom is noticeable when you stand up. I bought a pair speakers to match my Musical Fidelity (A3) system. For some reason, the UK press is in love with Arcam and are not particularly keen on the CM4s either. I must disagree completely here. I auditioned a number of speakers including the PMC FB1, Proac Studio 125, KEF Reference Model 12....and was disappointed with all of these. (Perhaps they sound better with the UK press' beloved Arcam's? - I didn't think so, although everyone has different tastes) I had decided against upgrading my entire system until I heard the B&W CM4s. They have a massive soundstage, great rhythm and accurately reproduce the recordings I had with me. I listen to a wide variety of music and they haven't suffered with any recording so far. To get the best from the speakers, I found I needed to move them about .5m from the back wall and away from the corners. I also toe-in the speakers and use bi-wire cables. ...add a power amp (A3CR) and these speakers seriously rock! The image moves about 5 feet forward. Strength:
Detailed, revealing Imaging (with proper placement and room) Balanced/integrated (not too much of anything very important) Finish, Style
Weakness:
Stability (no plinth) - but you don''t swing off them do you! Long break-in period (esp midrange) - but well worth the wait These are great speakers and were purchased for a 2-channel system with a view to HT at a later stage. I have heard them on Rotel, NAD & some esoteric gear in various listening environments both acoustically treated and untreated. In testing, whatever the source the CM4''s just sounded ''true'' I was continually drawn back to the sound I was hearing - each time I smiled and I wanted to listen more to see if there was anything that would furrow my brow - there wasn''t. They are very revealing, detailed and neutral. Possibly "laid back" but far from dull. Highs are refined and can deal at great volume without any harshness, the midrange is smooth and integrated, and the bass is surprisingly extended and controlled from a comparatively small cabinet. If it is there in the mix, you''ll hear it with these speakers. Basically poor recordings sound poor, good recordings sound good - so if versatility is your need you may be disappointed - but you don''t want everything to sound the same do you? To get the most out of these (and most any speaker) you need plenty of space both from the rear wall, and especially between the speakers themselves, off-axis they perform very well, and I have found that less toe-in sounds better. Of course a sub would assist with HT and the most demanding music. Hmmmm... a Rel Q201E would go nicely! However, once the tweaking is out of the way you really get the sense of them dissolving in your room and you are simply left to enjoy the music.
