Strength:

Nice sound stage. Good bass for these drivers. Solid mids.

Weakness:

Too boxy. Not transparent at all.

I've been auditioning speakers for about 2 months now. I'm being very picky while trying to find the perfect match for my listening habits. It's quite a struggle because each store has different equipment, interconnects, and wire hooked up to their speakers, so you're not only auditioning the speakers but also the equipment.
Last night after reading these reviews, I auditioned this pair. I was expecting to be impressed but was not. There was something missing... or too much of something. At first I could not put my finger on it, but then I realized that they sounded too boxy for my liking. They were not transparent at all.
I think that this speaker would be well suited for a home theater, but not for music. I'm only shopping for good speakers for music and that's why I don't have rave reviews. I would score this speaker higher if I was looking for a good pair of fronts for HT.

My equipment:
Rega Planet
Raga Mira
Kimber PBJ interconnects
Kimber 8VS wire
NAD C440 Tuner
Monitor Audio 3s
Definitive PRO 100 Sub

P.S. Give the Monitor Audio 5s a try if your in this price range for musical speakers.

Strength:

Home theater performance!!!

Weakness:

Why did you look here under "weaknesses", this speaker hasn't got any, of course.

I had to those between these and B&W DM604 S2, but I those these because I didn’t really need that extra bass unit. I already have a B&W ASW2000 woofer, which gives me plenty of bass. By the way… I use these as main speakers for my home theatre, if anyone has any questions, don’t hesitate just mail me.

! There is one thing to note about these speakers: they like to play loud, but that is no problem because I like to listen to them loud.

Have been using these for about 2 weeks and am very impressed by the clarity. They never sound too bright and
annoying even at high volumes.
Having the Nautilus Tweeter tube in the S2 does make it
sound a lot nicer.

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

flabby bass,

I simply think these speakers are not very good. I feel the 602's are a better sounding box. Sorry !
The bass simply is not accurate, sometime seems very tubby almost. High mids are not clearly represented.

Strength:

Crisp, Clean sound. Midrange is top notch.

Weakness:

none for the price.

I've had the 603s for about a month. My system does double duty as a HT and audio setup:

*Marantz SR7000 (av rec)
*Marantz DV-3100 (DVD/CD player)
*603S2 front mains
*601S2 surrounds
*CC6S2 center channel
*ASW1000 Sub.

The 603s are simply great speakers for the money and a good choice for me. For serious audio, I might be in trouble if I didn't have the powered sub, but since I was getting one for the HT anyway, I am loving the 603s.

The sound is crisp and clean. The midrange clarity really impresses me. I find myself listening to more classical than I used to, as the 603's really accentuate individual instruments. The units can also rock out pretty well also. I was listening to Rush's Moving Pictures and was amazed at the guitar and drum clarity I had been missing in the mid 80's. But, it should be noted that if Hard Rock is your music of choice, you'd do well to consider a sub, or go to the 604s. But that was my point when I said "for the money" in my opening line. I'll put these speakers up against any in the same price range.

The 601s compliment the 603s nicely and for background music, I will often use the receiver's 5ch stereo option. In 5ch mode, however, I found myself changing the settings to drive more through the 603s.

Strength:

Clarity, warmth, soundstage but…

Weakness:

…can be painful when bi-wired

I’ve got to make a correction to my previous review, because my experience with these speakers has changed. I’ve used them for half a year with an AMC cdp/amp combo (a NAD look-alike), and then things were in control. But now I’m upgrading my system, and I went straight to YBA entry level. With neutral and powerful amplification, the 603’s started to sound unbearable. Treble and bass extremes became overruling, loaded with strain, and mids got pale and dragging their feet. It felt like a bright sun piercing through heavy clouds on a stormy day. I thought I needed to buy a new speaker system right away, but I cannot afford it for the time being. Nevertheless I found a way to face this overturn, and I’ll post the message as advice for someone with a similar problem with the 603’s sound. Here’s what I did:

I moved the speakers about 76 cm/30” from the rear wall, and put damping material behind them (actually large sofa cushions).
I covered my living-room glass window with a thick piece of cloth.
I placed a rug on the floor between the speakers and my seat.
I STOPPED BI-WIRING. I found out that the main source of trouble was the double cables I was using. But since the original jumper bars are not a good solution, I tried this with success:
I used plain copper wire to replace the delivered jumpers, then linked a speaker cable to the upper binding posts.
As a result, bass is still pretty much there, but no longer boomy. And most of all, mids are more vivid now.

Try it if you may, and good luck.

Strength:

Upper bands and low listener fatigue.

Weakness:

What seems to be hard roll-off in the lower band - but it probably adds to the 'sting' of the sound.

A precise speaker actually handling the rock AND the classics I prefer. At the price (one of a few products relatively cheap in Norway!!) it delivers incredible value for money! No less.
Many contestors are no at all up to this challenge - to handle more than rock. I could not recommend it warmer at the price. The next step would be active crossovers and SEAS Excel mid-woofers plus Revelator tweeter and a super precise sub. The price? more than double. Even if you make it yourself!

Similar Products Used:

Gamma system sub plus JBL monitors. With an active crossover it only lacked the preciseness in 2-300Hz and below... Gamma will have to take the blaim.

Ok i have just been reading through the reviews for these speakers an i must say to all the people slamming the bass and /or clarity. I have had these speakers for 8 months now and i have found them to be a truly good all round speaker.

One thing i will say is they are rather sensitive to room placement. In my old house i had them close to the wall and they were REALLY boomy (quite muddy and unpleasant). Since moving to my new place i now have the ability to move them around abit and now am very impressed with the overall sound

Strength:

Maintains a nice bass punch, with amazing clarity and highs

Weakness:

They like to be driven at >25% volume

A few months back, I performed a major over-haul of my home stereo and home entertainment system. After much auditioning, I settled on the B&W DM603S2 Fronts, and CC6S2 Center, plus an ASW1000 Sub. My rears are B&W LM-1's. I have a Sony CD/DVD player DVP-C600D attached with an optical link to a STR-DA555ES Receiver. My front end speakers are connected with Double BiWire Audioquest CV4 and the Sub is on an AQ Jade sub cable.

By comparison, I found the Boston Accoustics to be too bright and very directional. While the Paradigm's were more "warm" than the BA's, they didn't tickle my ears with their highs. I found the B&W DM603S2's to be just right, and I built the rest of my system around that!

Before I went to the double bi-wire configuration I was 110% satisfied with the Home Theatre performance of this system, but felt that something was missing when listening to audio tracks. They just didn't seem as crisp and crystal clear or as "live" as I wanted. I was also looking to have my ears "tickled" by the highs a bit more.

Double bi-wiring with AudioQuest CV4 answered my prayers! I
couldn't be happier now! I just don't think I could buy better performing speakers without spending 10x as much.
My buddies with Mirage and Paradigm speakers are equally impressed with these babies from B&W.
