B&W DM604 S3 Floorstanding Speakers

B&W DM604 S3 Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The imposing DM604 S3 is the only full 3-way system in the range. The dedicated Kevlar® cone midrange driver is housed in its own isolated chamber within the cabinet and delivers all the nuances of the detail in the recording without the encumbrance of having to produce any bass.

Twin 180mm (7-in) aluminium cone bass drivers combine with Flowport to deliver the deepest bass frequencies with ease. Like all the vented-box systems in the range, foam plugs are supplied to block the ports should the acoustic of the listening room impose too much bass reinforcement.

Suited to larger rooms, the DM604 S3 is capable of reproducing everything from the delicate sounds of a solo performance to the complexities of a large ensemble. In combination with the LCR600 S3 centre speaker it forms the basis of a truly impressive home theatre installation.

Strength:

great sound low price

Weakness:

super low bass

These speakers sound great. The bass must go lower than the specified 39 hz. It has a tight punch. the tweaters respond wonderfully to horns (sax, trumpet). They have finally broke in after about 100 hours and sound fantastic. They work perfectly in my system. Strength:

overall response.

Weakness:

the vinyl that covered it. i don like

It has great definition, soundstage, and it can play very loud. I don't need to use the sub, and can hear every single instrument in the recording. In the beggining the mid's were a bit muted but after the break up, the mids sound very pleasant, the bass is taut and defined as well as the treble.

Strength:

Great highs, smooth lows, mids not negatively affected by tons of power and tons of bass. Great sound stage.

Weakness:

Not sure.

I listened to B&Ws a while back. I compared them to Paradigms, Monitors and a few others. At the time I chose the Energy Take 5 system do to my condo and budget contraints. Just recently I was looking for new speakers again. I auditioned several speakers including Klipsch, Energy Veritas, Paradigm, Vienna Acoustics and more. I was looking at the 603 S3 thinking it sounded great at a great price but decided to put in up against a Paradigm side by side in the same room. I was convinced at this point one of the two would make me happy. The sales person did an odd thing though. He said, "You have to compare it to the Studio 60", well I did and the 603 couldn''t keep up. The Studio 60 was 300 more though so at this point I''m wondering if I should spring for the Paradigm. Before just assuming that was the right speaker for me I decided to be fair to myself and audition the 604 which cam in at the same price (before the discount I got). I realized that the 604 had the low end the 603 was missing. It also seemed to strain far less then the 603. I was amazed at the improvement and since I did prefer the highs of the B&W to the Paradigm already, the bass was the last thing I needed to purchase the B&W. I believe that probably in the past the Studio 60 might have been better than the 604 S2, but at this point I prefer the 604 S3. Of course you should note, the speakers had to be side by side, I could probably take one or the other home and never know the difference. Anyway, that''s my story. Please note I''m not audiophile, I just like what I like. I purchased the LCR600, and 601 S3 for my rear speakers as well.

Strength:

Lots of power natural mids no distortion at any volume level !

Weakness:

too expensive??

After a long market survey, I finally found it.''The end of the road''...nearly perfect sound.awesome bass and mid, ear shredding tweeter. You seat back, and you can''t belive..it''s so real and so loud that you cant get up out of your sofa. You can hear Micheal Jackson clapping his hands and talking on ''Billie Jean''..Pink Floyd''s ''Delicate sound of thunder'' is really a live concert..and Bassment Jaxx makes you feel like you are in a nightclub.. Strength:

Tight Bass, strong & clear midrange, ultra clear highs.

Weakness:

NONE !!

I spent 2 months shopping for a new speaker set-up that could do 3 things very well. 1st- double as home theater & stereo speakers, 2nd- fill a large room(aprox 24'' x 24'' with 10'' ceiling)with clean powerful sound, and 3rd- I needed to remain with in a budget that I set for purchasing a reciever, main & surround speakers. The package I chose included B&W DM 604 S3 mains, which after listening to Polk,Boston Acoustics,Infinity,B&W & Phase Technology, It had come down to the B&W DM 604 S3 and the Phase Tech Theatro 11.5''s. After driving back and forth between the two stores about 3 times I decided that the B&W''s were superior in just about every detail. They did not need an internal powered sub in each tower to produce deep tight bass like the Phase tech''s did. The mid range & top end were also much clearer than the single 7" driver and soft dome tweeter that the Phase Tech''s provided. The sound that is now comming from these B&W''s after the 30 hours or so of break-in is nothing short of INCREDIBLE !! You will not regret the purchase of these speakers ! EVER ! I know I won''t.

Strength:

Sorrento finish adds light to a room Plays loud Full range of sound with right amp

Weakness:

No low listening level from what i have experienced(like it low too) Craves pure Power

I consider myself an Audio Enthusiast only because i listen to music all day while my TV sits collecting dust. Im pretty new at owning high end stereo equipment, but i do know this. That is the B&W 604S3''s are some top notch speakers. Being a 20yr. old i tend to play all kinds of music and play it loud. Its amazing how this speaker creates an image so full surrounding when finely tuned for listening. The dual aluminum 7in woofers surely pound some bass out, and its tight as well. The mid and highs are just sweet. Apocalyptica seems to be playing right in my house. Im sure there are better speakers out there but for what these retail in the States ($1700 in WI) i was easy to jump on a $1000 price tag here. And hey i dont think i did too bad with my first set of high end speakers.
