Strength:
Life like sound pressure levels.
Weakness:
Very revealing of poor recordings and electronics.
After more than 5 years I still feel these are the best all around speaker I have ever heard. They are very revealing of both the recording and the electronics. They do need power, lots of power. Don't purchase these speakers if you can't afford the amplification to drive them.

Strength:
Sound qualities are too long to list - beautiful look - uncompromising build - will last a lifetime
Weakness:
Won't cope with mass market elements - extremely demanding in terms of amplification - Difficult to place in the room - heavy I red a lot of pros and cons regarding these speakers. To my opinion they are one of the best sounding speakers I've heard BUT they are demanding indeed. Demanding in terms of amplification, demanding in terms of source, demanding in terms of cables and demanding in terms of placement. Once you have achieved solving the above equation you'll be ready for hours of pure listening pleasure.

Strength:
You name it. And at this price they are in a class with speakers costing up to $60,000 dollars. Not that they are better tan those more expensive model, just in the same class.
Weakness:
None I have owned the early (1982) b&w 802 Series One and most recently I have lived with a used pair of the B&W 801 of the same vintage. Over the years I have refined all aspects of the electronics and wiring of my system. Each time the vintage 801s registered the changes with improved sound. I was really happy.

Strength:
The best looking and the best sound speaker
Weakness:
Expensive, VERY HEAVY This is the best speaker that I have listen to. I use THETA CASABLANCA III and DREADNAUGHT II and Transparent reference balance cabling. The sound of the N802 is phenomenon. The sound stage is wide, crisp, and the bass is tight. The speaker is state of the art in construction, and very exotic looking. If you mate the N802 with the HTM1 center and DS8S surround, you got your self a killer system period. I highly recommand the N802 to anybody. Similar Products Used: wharfedale opus 3 |

Strength:
Dynamic range, imaging, resolution in a wide and deep soundstage. High WAF.
Weakness:
Deep bass in my listening room although I suspect deep bass would be adequate in a dedicated listening room. My N802's produce the most palpable mid-range of any speaker I've had in my own listening room. Driven by quality class A system components and good source material the N802's are capable of delivering the dynamic range required by large symphonic orchestras, imaging that places instruments in their proper place in the soundstage, and the resolution to hear every nuance of the performance. In my listening room the N802's produce a wide, deep, holographic soundstage.

fill in this space with whatever you can think of - and then double it
Weakness:
can't think of any I want to correct a review I made earlier about these speakers after listening to them in a dealer’s showroom. A year ago I bought a pair of these speakers and have no complaints whatsoever about them. Use them with a Musical Fidelity Kw 500 integrated, Nu-Vista 3D CDP, and transparent cabling throughout. The result is nothing short of total satisfaction, and I will not be changing these speakers for the duration A friend hit the nail on the head – they are the domestic final solution Similar Products Used: most of the B&W speaker range |

Strength:
Transparent and open with an immense amount of detail, where vocals are unforced and articulate. Mid and trebles are very crisp, open and explicit. Tuneful bass that is detailed and capable of great power when required. Wide and deep soundstage, which is three dimensional and airy. Precise and stable stereo imaging.
Weakness:
Rebels if paired with mass-market stuff. Needs decent partnering gear and therefore can sound disastrous if mismatched. It’s fascinating to read the cross section of opinions on this product and I can quiet empathies with those who loathe them and wise versa, as I have been on both sides of the fence at various points. My initial hearing of the N 802 was when it was paired with Krell Equipment and Transparent cables. I recollect being completely gutted, for want of another word, at how poor the speakers sounded. The base, what little of it was audible, was lumpy and unruly, the treble bright and irritating. I couldn’t comprehend what the fuss was all about. I had completely given up so much as even considering these horrendous sounding things and just prior to settling down for the fantastic Sonus Faber Amarti’s, accidentally stumbled upon yet another pair of N 802 paired with top of the line Levinson gear this time, connected once again with Transparent cables right across. Contrary to my previous experience, I was left mesmerized on this occasion. The N 802’s sounded like they were a completely different product altogether. It was then clear to me that these speakers, like most, need to be carefully partnered and that means getting the right combination rather than the most expensive. No other speaker that I’ve heard – and that’s more than I care to remember - varied so dramatically in their performance as these did. I was convinced enough to invest in a pair immediately and risked combining them with a Bryston 14B SST power amp, even though I had not listened to this combo, nor read any prior reviews of it at the time. I must confess that my decision was based merely on the affordability of this stunning amp. The compatibility of the combo? Walla! Spot on! Yet, one could tell that there was more to be eked out from these babies. I vaguely recollected then, that I had read somewhere about an owner stating the magic of Muse electronics Model 9 signature as a source component with the N 802’s. So once again I logged on to the web-sight of this manufacturer and since reviews were almost non-existent, decided to take the plunge. Call it luck, but the whole soundstage took a leap forward, resulting in the Nautilus’ breathing life into my room. The sound was phenomenal. I had unknowingly put together a perfect combination that gives me endless hours of listening pleasure and out performs combos that cost three and even four times more. I now use the Muse Electronics Model 11 as a source component along with Transparent Cables all the way. I really haven’t got adequate superlatives to do this combos performance justice. I also tried the Krell SACD standard however the Muse is ahead in a number of areas, even though this brand somehow does not get much attention by the hifi press. Moral of the story? These speakers need to be partnered with decent gear and of the right choice, so careful matching and listening is paramount. If one is lucky enough to hear these babies at their best, there will be no doubt about the incredible value of the product or the sheer genius of the team behind its creation. They truly are gems that are capable of achieving hifi Nirvana at an affordable price. Use the spikes, bi-wire them. Pity those who missed out on the experience. Strength:
Build quality is astonishing. The quality of the sound reproduction is better still. Looks, although i can appreciate that's a matter of taste.
Weakness:
They're not small, so might not suit smaller rooms. Damn heavy too! And *so* revealing, they can strip weaker recordings to the bone. I have to laugh. When somebody sdays their idea of musical Nirvana is Signature 805s (excellent though they are), i just can't take a critical review of 802 Nautilus seriously. Let's get this straight. The 802s need three things; 1. Great quality source components 2. Amps with sufficient wallop 3. A lot of experimentation in placement They lack bass?? LOL, absolute nonsense. Come and listen to mine - bring body armour with you. They sound boxy? LOL, come and listen to mine - hear things more lifelike than you've ever heard them before. They aren't full range? Not even worthy of a response. They lack soundstage? Well mine currently fill the entire lounge, most of the dining room and a good portion of the garden. Where DO these people listen to these things??!! At the end of the day, if you get the above three criteria right, you won't want for another speaker, ever. Period. End of. Oh, and swap the midrange centre cones for the aluminium items fitted to the 800s. And don't keep them on the rollers - they're EVEN better on the spikes! |

Strength:
Build Quality is in a class of its own! Midrange and tweeter are magnificently silky smooth! Ample amounts of bass! Amount of R&D B&W pumps into their speakers. (Read the B&W technical document, "Development of the Signature 800." Guess what...the same technology filters right into the 802s) What is not to like in a speaker that nears absolute perfection.
Weakness:
NO WEAKNESSES IN THIS SPEAKER! People who review these that think they know what they are talking about. (Come on people... George Lucas at Skywalker ranch uses the 802s with Chord amplification) It simply does not get any better than this!!! There always seems to be a love / hate attitude for B&W. I don't understand how people can hate a speaker that plays exactly what you give it without coloration. FOLKS, THERE IS A GOOD REASON WHY GEORGE LUCAS USES N802s AT SKYWALKER TO MIX AND WHY ABBEY ROAD IN THE UK USE THE N802s TO MIX AS WELL. It is perhaps one of the best speakers I have heard PERIOD!!! Yes, some recordings don't sound as good becuase this speaker is sooo revealing. A speaker is really designed to deliver exactly the signals it has been given. How can one fault a great speaker that delivers what it is given. GET REAL PEOPLE and buy decent software for your hardware and better yet buy good hardware to begin with instead and fix the real problem...which is not the 802s at all. Look at the money B&W spends on acoustic research to chase perfection. Again, there is a reason the best mixing and recording studios in the WORLD use B&Ws. They are everything an serious listener wants in a speaker and more. |
