Strength:

Great speaker for the money, excellent clarity with good highs and midrange

Weakness:

Could use more bass - but what do you expect for the size? made of Fiberboard, but for the money who cares

The people on this website who put down Bose 301's, are a bunch of Nose in the air loser snobaphiles with negative attitudes.
These are excellent sounding speakers for the money and not everyone has $1500.00 to $10,000.00 on hand to spend on top of the pile speakers.
Granted they aren't constructed of real wood, but it's whats on the inside that counts. They give off excellent midrange and sound reproduction with my Marantz HTS and if placed in the right spot, sound excellent with great clarity at high volumes. These are used as my main and an extra pair for surround. These speakers used in conjuction with a Sub give off the extra bass needed. I've been cranking the sh*t out of these speakers for almost six years now using my 3rd A/V receiver. They have stood the test of time with my abuse and have no complaints yet. If your having problems hearing what you want, maybe you better try upgrading your reciever first.

Strength:

Weakness:

cannot be seen now a days

very good speakers for music
natural sound
hi frequency
mids and bass
the spk is a book shelf and so u cannot expect a terrific bass, but this bass is more then enough for a 15 x 15 room

even though these are not the best in industry , it is better then many other speakers.

I asked you politely not to make me cry.....and look what you've done.

It's not the receiver, it's the speakers. Or maybe it's my IXOS interconnects, or my IXOS speaker wire? Or my DVD-Audio Player...

Or maybe when I connect my Axiom Audio M3 Ti's to my neithbor's higher end system, described, albeit vaguely, above, in place of his BOSE 301's....something magically changes besides the speakers. Listen to a good speaker back to back with these.

Strength:

Sarcastically, papers woofers and tweeters!!! heheh

Weakness:

everything under the sun and in the cosmos

Bose speakers are absolute crap. there is no way around it. The speakers have no mid frequency response. What sound does come out is forced. The high are not good enough to allow one to hear a drum stick hit a symbol. The bass doe snot go much below 50 hz, bad for 6.5" woofers. Also, I was told froma pretty reliable source, that while all of bose competitors have moved onto carbon-fiber composites and other carbon based materials; bose has continued to use only paper products. Thus, they have no kept up with the pace of technology. One can only speculate what their motives are but I think that the plummetting cost in paper products has allowed them to reduce their cost and keep their prices the same...thus a large bottom line.
I have compared intensely the BIC dv62si, speakers that I got for $50 /piece 4 years ago with the Bose 301 Series III only just recently and to my surprise the sound generated by this bic was an immense clear sound oppose to Bose.
Also, another problem I have found is that upon contacting bose for technical data that it is impossible to get because does not release any technical data to the general public concerning their product. After expressing my immense displeasure with this, I decided never again would I pay for the crap that one gets when one buys bose. Compard to all of the other products out there...one should not ever buy bose.
The only good aspect of bose is that they market remarkably well. For a company that has garbage for product they really do know how to sell it. Kind of reminds me of a used car salesman, not too offend but bose is the worst when it comes to speakers.
To sum up, over priced garbage is all it is. Try bic their speakers are as good as nht, castle or the like, but at half of the price.

Strength:

I have to say good looking....

Weakness:

Just about everything

I actually felt attached to the Bose 301 III for years. Since it is the first pair of speakers I purchased. It was rated number one on Consumer Reports. Now I own Boston Acoustics VR 970 which cost $1600/pair. Of course there is no way a $320 speaker system can compare to a $1600 speaker system. So it is understandable that Bose couldn't sound as good as the Boston Acoustics.

Soon after I buy the Bose 301, I got a pair of Polk M3II as my home theater's sound speakers. For the Polk M3II only cost about $150 a pair, also with it much smaller size, I didn't even try to compare the Polk M3II with the Bose 301 III.

After so many years, now I have a complete different systems (As I mentioned above, now I have Boston Acoustics, which I think may be the best sounding speakers for that price range.), so I give my Bose and Polk to my girlfriend.
While I setup the speakers for her, my girlfriend asked me to do a compare between Bose and Polk.

I thought the Polk M3II couldn't stand up to the Bose 301 III. But I was WRONG!!

The Polk sound much better than the Bose in just about every aspect - even in bass reproduction!! How can Polk - which each speaker is only about a quarter size of the Bose have better sounding bass?! I don't know. I don't have a degree and I am not a loudspeaker engineer. But I can hear it! So is my girlfriend. Compare with the Polk M3II, Bose is junk! Yet I used the Bose as front speakers and leave the Polk as surround speakers for years. Unbelievable!

I know that both loudspeakers are now discontinued. There seem to be no point write about them and post this message on the Internet. But I think it is important to let whoever is reading this message while considering purchase any Bose system know ¡V don¡¦t buy any Bose products! It is true indeed. No wonder so many others cursed Bose on this website. Bose deserved it.

Those of you who are considering Bose, PLEASE compare Bose with any other products before you buy. You will understand what I mean.

Strength:

Bright and clean highs, clean mids, excellent bass from an 8" driver.

Weakness:

NONE.

Unlike many of the uneducated morons to submit reviews, I have a musically trained ear. There is a definite difference between natural music, and music that has been overly mixed and compressd. One cannot possibly expect massive bass response from an 8" driver in a BOOKSHELF speaker. The Slot Vented design produces amazing bass for the size. Granted, this design does not yield Earth shattering bass, but who needs that anyway? This speaker is obviously created for realistic and accurate reproduction of natural sounding music. Anyone with any kind of musical or audio knowledge knows this. For the size, price range, and accurate representation of what is on the CD, Tape, Record or what have you, this speaker could not be any better. So, for all you bass heads thinking you are going to crank out 20 Hz at 140 db, you might want to stick to the true joke known as a bandpass box. For anyone wanting REAL musical sound, give the 301s a listen.

WARNING!!!
If you are not an ardent BOSE proponent, and you have posted a negative review of a bose product, you may be subjected to the wrath of an individual who goes by the moniker "Mr. Bose". He will come to you in stealth, with a foul tongue and an equally lacking vocabulary totally void of any degree of usefull coherency. This person is evidently either retarted or perhaps a crack adict.

Mr. BOSE: We know your out there, however your cowardice is evident in the fact that you don't give anyone the opportunity to respond to you maniacal ravings. This will not be tolerated. At least When I write a to reviewer I give them a chance to retort. Mr. Bose, it is well that you are devoted to your cause, nevertheless, it is unfortunate that you lack the intelligence to convey your ignorant beliefs. It is advisable that you consult a dictionary which, just in case you weren't aware, is a book which may bestow upon you startling revalations about the mechanics of intelligent expression. I await your response.

Just so EVERYBODY can be clear on this: I gave the speakers that I OWN not the rest of BOSE's products. I have heard the newer series IV's and they do not sound as good as the pair of III's that I own... I do not know about other series III speakers, but mine sound good to me... And by the way, just because you say your an "audiophile" on the web, it doesn't mean much because none of us can see what your system is, so you can say all you want. KNOWBODY, can see your system; for all we know, you just have a really crappy Jensen rack system and want to sound important! :-0 Plus, if your an "audiophile" what do you care what people buy?! Their not spending your money! And just so you know I enjoy reading comments about BOSE, I'm not an employee, and I have not nor will buy anymore BOSE in the future... I'm looking at Vandersteen, but us "audio enthusiast's" have to save our money for equipment like that...As I said above, I only rated the speakers that I own, nothing else...
NUFF SAID.........
