Strength:

As like any Bose product they have supreme treble and high end sounds. Good midrange bass.

Weakness:

No weakness just like any bose product.

I use these speakers as mains on my system. They are very loud! Treble and high end sounds are excellent. Clarity is perfect. If your speakers sound fuzzy or distorted its a problem with your reciever.

Most people think that the Home theater reciever plays bass on the front channels wen in surround sound. Truth is they do to a certain extent. If you want bass get a subwoofer. I currently run 2 Cerwin Vega LW15 subs on my system with the bose speakers.

BOSE IS NOT DESIGNED FOR DEEP BASS OR HALF ASS DEEP MIDRANGE. They will play any high sound you can play through them.

For about $800 dollars you can go to best buy and get the Bose 301 for the front, 201 for the rear and the VCS 10 for the center. ON A GOOD RECIEVER WITH LOW HARMONIC DISTORTION they will sound excellent. Now if you want bass get a Cerwin Vega, infinity, klipsch, polk or what ever powered sub you want except a KLH sub any KLH speaker is not even worth talking about.

Now if you go with the
Bose 301 front
Bose 201 rear
Bose VCS 10 center

You will be satisfied. A 100 x5 watt reciever should be good.
Pick up a good sub for about $500 and you will be set.

Rough price $400 for a reciever
$800 for bose speakers
$500 for a subwoofer

Total $1700 For a home theater system.

ANYONE who says that bose is terrible is not right in the head. True they are High priced. And are assembled in mexico : ( but they are excellent quality for a cheaper high end home theater system.

GO bose unless you have gobs of money to spend on nicer products.

Overpriced speakers. Not terrible, but not worth half the asking price. Look elsewhere for value, unless you like paying for a few dollars worth of parts and a hundred dollars worth of marketing.

That is my real e-mail address, aren't you jealous?
David Dickins, your musician credentials do not mean a thing. My father has a PHD in Music, and my Grand Father was an orchestral conductor for a city of 700,000 plus people. Neither one would know a 3 star from a 5 star speaker if it bit them on the ass. You could probably guess I am a musician too, and you would be right.

No, you will never totally create a "live" reprduction. You can however come close, but only by using good equipment. The dumb comment about a $20 source is inane. The CD cot $20, however, on good recordings (Reference Recordings, Chesky, Audioquest, Telarc etc..) thousands of dollars are spent in the making of a album.

I think the Nays have it here. For the other people who write "I don't understand why these guys are bashing Bose" (paraphrased). I am glad you can read our reviews, because if we had to talk about Bose face-to-face I am afraid your hearing problem might be a communication barrier.

These speakers are an atrocity to all fair minded citizens every where. They use the same philosophy the Nazi's used in WW II. Tell a lie, tell it Big, and tell it over and over so that the second time someone hears it it is confirmed by the first.

Listen to some real speakers at a dealer (find one you like and trust first).

No way worth the price. Typical Bose bass...one note. No highs, sounds like the singers are singing into their chests with a scarf around their mouth. Very generous two stars. Much better speakers for the price out there. Can't wait to upgrade!

Regarding Dave Dickens review. I have 2 degrees in music and have spent time conducting, teaching, working as both a radio DJ and running the desk in a recording studio and take it from me - Bose Blose.
I have auditiond these speakers at both sears and CC and its tragic that people spend this much on a speaker of such low quality in terms of both sound AND workmanship.

Try out a pair of NHT super ones or super zeros and you will see what I mean

But of course, Paul Harvey has a set of Bose..... Good Day////

Strength:

none

Weakness:

everthing in side and outside the box

I was once into Bose because i was a stupid kid that did not know any better and bought all the hype that Bose say's. a lot of people i know have Bose and i thought Bose can't steer me wrong but was i lead into the path of a moving train. i bought these speakers after listening to them at Fry's and believing the sales man about what he said about research and develpoment(crap). i brought them home hooked them up and listened to all my cds. man did these speakers love to bottom out and take up a lot of space. no clear highs and bass was nasty ugly crap...my brother laught at the prcie i paid for them and laught at the sound they made. so i thought i better throw them away or set them on fire so they can go to hell, but then i decided to do an expertment. get car speakers an see if i can use the box since it already had an 8" cut out. i went to my friends car audio store and put some Earthquake 8" db subs in and the component set inside. the 8's are dual 4ohms voice coils and the comp.set is 4ohms so i can wire them in 8ohms. i had him cut out a bigger hole because the 8's had a bigger magnet and surround. i placed the 5 1/4 on the side where to two crappy tweeters where and the comp tweeter on top flush mounted. i throw away the tweeters that where used in the bose box and the 8" crap sub. i love the new set up now no bottom out and crisp highs and finaly a midrange that never existed before. so didn't throw them away or give them up for targets get some Earthquake subs and component 5 1/4 set up and they will make you a lot happier then before.

Weakness:

There are better speakers out there for the same money. BOSE is more marketing hype than actual resaerch and product quality

I bought my first BOSE speakers (501's) when I was 14 (15 years ago) and enjoyed then up until a few months ago. The foam surrounding the drivers fell apart after 15 years. Over the years I added 301's and a VCS-10 center channel and though I had a good sounding sytem. Now I have B&W Nautlis speakers with a Velodyne sub and I realized what I had been missing. BOSE has become more marketing focused over the years and this all but replaced R&D and in some cases quality. BOSE makes an average consumer product at a price point that is probably a little high, so I would recommend looking to other manufactures. You can do better elswhere unless maybe you want the small size of the AM series cubes or something.

Strength:

The name. The price ($159 for the pair). The fact that my wife likes Bose.

Weakness:

For this price, none.

It's used as my rears for the HT. Not bad for the price. They sound better than the Radio Shack.

I have a Sony DB-930 Receiver with a Sony DVD and Bose AMT 7 (4 piece - 3 sat and 1 sub) for the front and another 50watt Sub (not enough but can't afford a bigger one yet).

For those of you who simply hates Bose products. That's your opinion. The most important opinion to me is my wife's and she likes these speakers and that's that. To me, these are great speakers for what it cost. They are hard to place because of the design but once you get it done they sound decent. In the rear, they don't need to be awesome but it's better than the junk I got back there before.

Bottomline, if I can afford more would I buy these 301 Series III? No, but what awesome speakers can you buy for $159? And yes, the name is important. Like it nor not, Bose has projected itself as a good speaker company and that's worth something to my wife. To me, it's better then the crap I had back there before :)

I'm submitting this review to counter the poor review given by "A disturbed citizen." Either disturbed continued to buy every Bose product even after he decided they were crap or he's rating something that he doesn't really own. I'd advise him to stop posting falsified, biased reviews and to break out that dictionary he talked about and learn how to spell retarded and addict.

Thanks
Daniel

Strength:

Everything imaginable!!! absolutely the best speakers ever made!!! The base is only paralled by MAYBE the Wilson Audio WATT/puppy. and the Treble! My god, dynaudio wasted their time designing those silly esotar tweeters(not to mention B&Ws wacky nautilus tweeter design, but I'll get into that)!!! Who'd have thought that the best treble in the entire world could come out of a $2 paper wizzer cone?!

Weakness:

The only weakness I can think of is that thier not for free!!!!!!!!! I love them THAT much!!!

I wanted a very accurate 2-chan music only system for my gameroom in the basement. so I decided that B&W Nautilis 803s with a Rotel RCD-990 CD player, Bryston 14B-ST amp (500 watts x2, $5500), and Bryston PB-25 MC pre-amp($2900) would be the way to go. And they where great!!! the base was incredibly dynamic with the 500 watts per chan, and the treble and mid range where some of the best I'd ever heard. But then One day my girlfriend made me go into the nearby bose-outlet. I didn't want to go, being the snobby rich audiophile that I am, but I went just to appease her. The first (and only thing) I heard where the Bose 301s. I couldn't believe my ears. The 301s have the best treble I've ever heard. Way better than those $95 tweeters that the 803s use. Here I went and spent $5000 on a pair of speakers when all along I could have gotten a $300 pair of BOSE that put my 803s to shame!!! I felt SO stupid. The 803s claim freq. response of 36Hz-20kHz. If thats true, then the 301s must be capable of like, 25Hz-40kHz!!!!! At least!!! That stereo everywhere sure works too! I used to have to SIT DOWN in the same chair to get the best out of my 803s. But with 301s, I can just wander the room and really scrutinize my favorite recordings. I mean the most carefull listening is always done while moving seats, right??? The best speakers on earth! I sold my 803s the next day and used all the money left over( I got $3600 for some stupid jack*ss!!!) to buy the 301s for $300 and spent the remaining $$$$ on candy bars and yahoo stock. I kept all the expensive electronics, I mean, $10000 of electronics is just the begining of what bose deserves right?!
The moral of the story? Bose speakers are the best in the entire world. end of story. If you spend money on ANYTHING other than bose, your wasting it;)
