I have read some interesting reviews, and every person is different in what sounds good to them. I purchased these speakers at an Army PX in Germany for about $560, and I had them conected to a Pioner VSX-D3S receiver that claimed 100 watts per channel for the mains. My room-mate already had bose 301's run off and ADCOM system and they sounded pretty good, so that clued me in about bose. So my 501's rocked nicely but semed to lack base, and cranking up base wih the receiver only made it warbly, but placing them farther apart helped and overal i was pleased with them. In the years since they have been in many different rooms with of diferent wall types. I CANNOT OVER-STATE THAT THESE SPEAKERS REQUIRE A HOLLOW FRAME WALL THAT CAN RESONATE!!! Masonry walls dont do that very well, and i have personaly seen the difference. It seems these babies need more power than I've ever given them, but can attest to their ability to sound great at low power. the pioneer died by developing a crackle in the left channel, repair was too expensive so i trashed it. well its replacement is an RCA bookshelf system that has 60 watts per channel and it soundsamazing. Yes there are speakers that are better than these, I highly rocommend thse because they last forever and they sound great with almost anything you connect them to. EXCELLENT VALUE anything |

Strength:
They'd make a great door stop.
Weakness:
No high definition, no bass, just a rather muddy mid range.
First off, I don't own, nor have I ever owned these speakers. However, I am familiar with them.

Strength:
Size, pleasant sound when set up with a good amp, nice imaging.
Weakness:
Quality of parts are not up to the retail asking price. Its interesting that people rant like Bose is the devil or something.

Strength:
Suavidad de agudos y respuesta hasta 18Khz!
Weakness:

Strength:
At ear height the base poors out of the back of these things, exeptional clarity.
Weakness:
not particularly elegant in design. (my opinion anyway) I have owned a pair of nice looking, very good (not perfect) but very good sounding bose 501v's for just over a year now, and if you are thinking of buying a pair...DO IT!!

Strength:
Clear, crisp sound
Weakness:
Lack of bass, need a subwoofer I was not terribly impressed with these speakers the first time I heard them in Best Buy. Later I purchased a pair of Bose 701 Series II speakers and found them to be exactly what I wanted at the time. To round out my home theater I searched for and found the Bose 501 Series V speakers to use as my surround speakers. I have not regretted this decision once. The 501's provide the perfect sound for the rear of the room and the direct reflecting technology really helps you feel surrounded. The 501's don't have enough bass to be used as a front speaker in my opinion unless you are going to have a nice subwoofer to back them up with sound but they are perfect surrounds and can be found inexpensively on ebay. Well, from most of the reviews I've read here proper speaker placement and association with other speakers has not been explored. I have had the Bose 501 V speakers for about 6 years now and have been very pleased with them from the get go. They need to be properly placed in a room with walls very much in consideration. You can take these speakers and absolutely fill up a room with fantastic sound, not to mention adding a sub and a couple of rear bookshelves, but, proper placement is key. |

Strength:
Strong Bass (if you've heard otherwise they weren't positioned correctly or didn't have enough power) Strong treble Great Styling Handle lots of power for receivers that are made today
Weakness:
Strong Treble: as a strength and a weakness, the tweets can sound grainy sometimes, and sometimes overpowers any midranges that are produced Lack of Mid Driver: As stated above, the speakers sound good, but could have benefitted with the addition of a subtle midrange driver. Bass Tonal Qualities: I haven't yet put my finger on it. Sometimes really good, other times sounds just like bass and not like bass notes. I wrote a review more than a year ago on these same speakers. Now that I've had some time with them, I'd like to say that overall these speakers aren't nearly as bad as some would say. They do have some shortcomings, The treble may be a bit too "electric" or "tingy" sounding, and I still believe a larger midrange driver would have been better. the "tweeter" which faces the listener is actually crossed over in the midrange, with the highest frequencies cut off from that driver. The other true tweeter is the one at an angle. It would have made more sense to put a mid and a tweeter facing the listener, and to keep with the "stereo everywhere" effect, put an attenuated tweeter at an angle. I recently purchased a pair of Wharfedale bookshelf speakers (8"woofer, mid and tweeter) and I believe the Wharfedales do have an edge in presence and accuracy, but the 501's do have more pronounced bass response, louder but not necessarily better treble, and the 501's do not have the midrange quality of the Wharfedales. Due to the tweeters not being in the rear of these Bose speakers, they do not share some of the characteristics found in many other models, which dilutes the soundstage. It is possible, even with the angled tweeters, to tell where the sound is coming from, and to get some of the essence of the recording. In this though, I believe the Wharfedale's do better. They seem to show the listener more effortlessly where the instruments and singers are, and it is much easier to determine, for instance, what type of microphone was used during the recording, and the overall atmosphere of the recording studio. This is something that is hinted at, and found to a pretty good degree in the 501's, but is much more apparent in the Wharfedales. Do I like the 501's? Yes I do. If the scale were 1-10, 10 being the best speakers I have heard (the best I've heard are currently in the $5,000-$7,000 range) I would give these speakers a 6/10, which really is good considering. Better than average when compared to everything from KLH and Radio Shack to Castle, Magnepan, and even Thiel and Infinity Epsilon, I'd say is a pretty good performance. These speakers could probably best be categorized in this way. As far as Circuit City, Best Buy speakers go, The 501's, when properly amplified and positioned correctly, are among all of the better and some of the best available in those markets.
