Yes, there are better sounding speakers for less money. However, some of us who live in apartments need to make use of the little space we have effectively. That is what led to my purchase of the AM-6. They were within my budget, gave me instant 5.1 sound (actually 5.0, but will get to that later), and are completely UNNOTICEABLE. The white ones blend right into the wall. For inconspicuous speakers, they produce a lot of sound. My only complaint is the passive subwoofer (that's why its actually 5.0). This set needs a powered subwoofer added to it to give it solid bass and that extra 1 track. With an additional powered sub, I'll give the AM-6 a 4, but without it gets a three.

Strength:

Excellent sound for Dolby Pro-Logic Surround. Also plays great in stereo mode for music.

Weakness:

No support for 5.1 surround for the sub. Results in weak bass when using 5.1. Single cube is best for smaller room. Recommend the Acoustimass 10 for larger rooms.

I think this is a very good surround speaker package for the price. I'd recommend it to others.

Weakness:

Center channel stinks

Well folks, this is my second review of this speaker system, having lived with them for 6 months now. So after watching countless DVD's and having listened to all types of music on them, do I feel any differently? In a word, somewhat. I loved these speakers before, and I still do. The clean sound, balanced bass and small size still make me smile every time I turn them on. With that said though, I had to make one major change. When watching Dolby Digital DVD’s, I eventually found that the center channel sounded weak and muddy. Face it, that little single-driver cube just can't handle all the critical sounds (namely dialogue) that are routed to the center channel. Clear dialogue is crucial in a movie, and in this aspect, I am picky. If you only heed one thing regarding HT systems, remember that the center channel is arguably the most important for MOVIES. For listening to regular CD's or FM, these speakers were fine. But DVD's are what we do the most, so I started looking to replace the center channel. The first logical choice was the Bose VCS-10, which looks great, and being Bose, should have been be a good match. So I listened...and quickly found out that the VCS-10 was NOT worth the $199 price tag. It really wasn't a whole lot better than the little center cube that comes with the AM-6
system. Luckily, there were some JBL and Polk models sitting close by, and for $50 less than the Bose, I chose the Polk CS-175. Now there is a REAL center channel. Yes, it’s bigger, but it is worth every extra square inch! Hooking it up to the AM-6 system was painless, and wow, what a difference it makes. It blends just fine other 4 AM-6 speakers and subwoofer. So all in all, I still love this Bose system. Now then.. should you have to spend $150 to upgrade a system that already sells for $599? No. But since I love everything else about the AM-6's, I can live with it. So I give 3 stars for value since I had to spend more money to bring it up to par, and 4 stars for overall rating since the system as a whole is quite good.

Weakness:

Scooped Middle, Speeker Cord Flexibility, expensive mounts

I wanted to put together a new Dolby digital/DTS home theater system (including TV/monitor) to replace my old system, and I had a price ceiling of $1700 that I absolutly was not going to exceed. I also have a girlfriend that wanted my audio visual components to not take over the living room (this was not a demand, however i agreed for the most part). So I looked at systems in the 300-1000 dollar range.

I went to audiophile stores to look and came away thinking the speekers were fun to listen to at but not in my price range. I checked out online recources (mostly this one) and looked at more common stores like Best Buy and Circuit City. I checked out competing systems from Sony, JBL, Cambridge Audio, Bose, Polk, and others that I cant remember. Almost all of these were a bit of a dissapoitment, but some of the higher end systems sounded pretty good.

While doing this I purchased the other components of my system (Toshiba 32" inch TV, Pioneer 608 Receiver, and Pioneer DV333). the grand total of all of these components came to about $1100 with tax. I lucked out on all of them with open boxes and a double sale on the TV. So I had $600 left to spend on the speekers.

I went to the Best buy and gave all the systems a good honest try, and came away impressed with the tiny little Acoustimass 6 system. They had one open box that they dropped the price from 599 to 549, and I promptly bought it. I figured I could return if I didnt't like it. Well I never did, and have been very happy with the systems so far.

Dont be fooled by posts here, this is not a high end system, and should not be considered as such. Comparing it to BWs is stupidest thing I can imagine. It does not sound that great for music, it has too much of a scooped middle. But for 5.1 sources it rocks!! But if price and size are at all important to you you should consider this system. It sounds wonderful for any 5.1 playback, and thats what its for, isn't it?

Weakness:

Bass? No wall brackets

I bought this product primarily for use as Home Theatre speakers. It is easy to set up and does not occupy too much space. It is great for people like me with transferable jobs as it all fits in a box and does not weigh too much. I in fact bought it in California and carried it back to Kuwait. They sound great for Home Theatre and music. Clarity is excellent. It has a rich ambience and good soundstage. Bass response is tight and not over emphasized. Maybe, some people will find it is a bit low on bass but that depends on your individual taste. I find the bass more than adequate especially as I live in a flat and very strong bass would piss off my neighbors. For those of you who like strong bass, I recommend adding a powered sub woofer. However these speakers should not be compared with the more traditional tower speakers with different drivers for mid range and high frequencies and with built in powered sub woofers; they just do not belong in that category. They are also not meant for true audiophiles but for audio enthusiasts who need speakers better than those marketed by Japanese companies like Sony & Technics etc but do not wish to invest in expensive tower speakers. They produce excellent sound when hooked up to my Yamaha Dolby digital/dts receiver, and Panasonic DVD player. All in all they are excellent entry-level home theatre speakers.

Strength:

small, cheap, easy set up

Weakness:

sound quality, plugs on speaker wires

These are remarkably easy to set up, and practically invisible when installed. The Bose wall and ceiling mounts are way overpriced and don't hold their adjustments over time, but they sure look slick. For dvd use, the sound quality is great. I have to agree with another reveiwer on this, watch "The Matrix" with these cranked and you'll be looking for a broom to sweep up the 50 caliber shells landing all around you.
These have two downsides. First, the (required) speaker wires have big plugs on them, so you need to punch big holes in your wall or ceiling to run your rear speakers, or you have to cut and splice the wires. Second, for listening to well recorde and mastered audio, they are a letdown. I know, they don't cost very much (for six speakers) but still, they say Bose, and .......

Price..

I didn’t read any review before I bought my Acoustimass AM 6 speaker set. At the store they sounded good and therefore I bought them. I paid $805 Canadian including local taxes, which is about $535 US dollars. After reviewing various speakers I realized that these speakers are overpriced. I have them for over a month now and I am satisfied with them, if I don’t think about the price I paid. There are some bad reviews on Bose speakers out there but as long as AM6 is concerned, they do pretty good job. Just try the movie Armageddon or The Matrix in DVD, you will know what I mean, incredible bass on these movies, it blows. If you have Dolby Digital Receiver with 5.1 sound, these speakers do a fine job for home theater.

Strength:

Awesome sounds for such small speakers

Weakness:

Weak bass

"Wow" was the first word i said after installing these speakers and watching my first DVD movie. The sound is big for these small cube speakers, and the are easy to hide and mount on any wall. (with the purchase of a seperately sold wall bracket) The problem I encountered with the AM 6 is the bass produced by the AM module. It blows! Well it blows without the proper placement. I got some bass when i put it in a corner, but it was not enough for me because i'm a rap listener who needs to feel the bass. To make this a good system, try buying a seperate powered subwoofer.
(i'd give 5 stars if the sub was better)
A very good and high power reciever is also recommended to make good use of the incredible sound these cubes can produce. To conclude, the Bose AM 6 is a good entry level system for anyone looking for a blast.

After listening to several entry level home theater speaker systems in various stores, Bose was the obvious choice and the only one that provided a sound that clearly matched the movie soundtrack. The entry level offerings from Yamaha, Cerwin-Vega and Sony paled in comparison and it was obvious that they don't take the entry-level home theater market seriously. Every time I watch a movie with a great sound track, I'm reminded that I made the right decision and would easily give these speakers 5 stars.
