Lost my high freq hearing driving tanks, so couldn't care less if they don't produce mosquito flatulents. They sound great to me, and I'm the customer.

Strength:

Easy to place out of sight. O.k. mid-bass when "base-module" was properly placed

Weakness:

I think that dead horse has been beaten enough

I purchased an AM-7 demo package along with a Sony Pro-Logic A/V receiver in 1995. Got both for around $650. At the time, it was a very good package considering the mass-market speakers were crap and the mid-fi and hi-fi stuff was just too expensive for a college kid. Fast forward to 1999. Out of school, have a good job, bought a new car, got furniture for the house, and decided to start upgrading my A/V system. First thing I did was visit the Bose outlet and sat through their "movie". Sounded pretty good, but the systems were way too expensive, so I started looking around at alternatives. Went to the mass-market retailers, and although they were cheaper, the sound wasn't much better. Then I found this site, and others, and started researching A/V receivers, speakers, and DVD players. Well after a year, I am nearly there. I have come to the light. I can now say unequivocally that, after owning these speakers for more than four years, Bose is all smoke and mirrors. I never knew what I was missing in my home theater (which was the best part of the system). I knew that they were missing something (actually quite a bit) when listening to two channel stereo. Please, please visit your local hi-fi and mid-fi stores before buying Bose. You will not regret it. My new system:

Sharp 36" T.V. (due for an upgrade)
Onkyo TX-DS787 THX EX/DTE-ES A/V receiver
Pioneer Elite DV-09 DVD/CD
Adcom GFA 6000 (100x3 50X2)
Dynaudio Audience 80 fronts
Dynaudio Audience C122 center
Dynaudio Audience 42 L/R surround
Klipsch Quintet pr. rear surrounds
Onkyo CDR (forgot model number)
and my trusty Sharp Hi-Fi Stereo VHS player.
Monster and IXOS connections throughout

Now I need a sub to fill the 80's below 34 hz. (Rel?) and a more powerful amp. After that, a 50+ inch HDTV and my dream system will be complete. But by then, it will all be obsolete again, and I'll have to start over!

This is a correctment a comment made by Jeff who seems to have some facts wrong. Bose did in fact sue consumer reports about a review of the 901's. However, you are foolish and ignorant to think they sued simply because the review was negative. One can't do that. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the case was presented to the Supreme Court where Bose LOST. They did not win Jeff. Check Your FACTS...Then type.

Strength:

For this price, to be totally honest, there are none. period.

Weakness:

Not a bad speaker system, UNTIL YOU SEE THE PRICE.

I grew up a nerd. I idolized Amar Bose and wanted to get my EE degree from MIT. Well, I didn't get it there, and now I think that this guy is a crock.
It literally is a CRIME to charge so much for so little speaker.
They sound OK. No soundstage to speak of, tremendous treble roll-off at about ..oh i would guess...13KHz, and poor mid-bass and mid range (try listening to a buddy rich drum solo).
However, these are all common problems with speakers - COSTING 1/4 AS MUCH!!!!
Honestly, for those of you who wonder why "Bose-bashers" are so fervent, we love audio. We take it very seriously.
We are intelligent people who find it OFFENSIVE when an obviously inferior product is being forced on masses of people by a media BLITZ of advertising. (Personally, i like the alarm clock thing - but again, even it is too expensive)
There are no high-tech materials in use here.
I recently found something that makes me want to puke:

Strength:

The cubes are the perfect size for keeping my furniture in storage off the floor.

Weakness:

They aren't strong enough to hold my funiture off the floor

I've read much of the Bose, anti-Bose rhetoric and I took it with a grain of salt, but...it seemed to me the anti-Bose crowd sounded much more credible. On my recent Navy deployment I purchased equipment from Ebay and here's what I bought:

Pinnacle CGT speakers: $325 pr.
Carver TFM-6 amp: $150
Carver CT-6 preamp $150
Nakamichi 670zx cass deck $180
Carver S/DA 360 CD player $125

GRAND TOTAL...............$750

My neighbor (who's stationed on my ship) stopped by after the deployment to hear what I bought, and was blown away! I was flattered, especially since mine is a VERY modest system. He then wanted me to hear his. You see where this is going?
Yes, he had the Bose Acoustimass, driven by a Sony AV receiver, and yes, I finally got to hear for myself, they sound like total crap. The treble was dirty. That's the best word I can use to describe it, and the mids seemed to sort of blare. People actaully pay for these??? Now I've heard for myself what I really knew in my heart all along. I've been an electronics technician for 16 years, and I know a 3" paper cone cannot reproduce a 15khz sound wave accurately.

Honestly, My JBL N-26's sound better, and I paid $99 pr. for them.

Bose, you suck, and all of you who own Bose, don't be too proud to admit you were duped! At least let someone make a profit from you who's going to give you a decent product in return.

Strength:

Fantastic installation, very nice looking, excellent matching accessories, convenience of placement, durable.

Weakness:

Alas, as mentioned below, sound quality. Sadly, they do not measure up to speakers at even a quarter of the price.

As the gentlemen below pointed out, Bose has quite a marketing scam going for it. Most new enthusiasts seem to believe that Bose represents the ultimate in high end without ever having heard a Bose speaker. This is due to the terrific adverising that the company does, added to the pressure from salesmen who earn a higher markup on Bose than for most other products. (In other words, your A/V store gets to pocket more money for selling Bose than for, say, a Martin Logan system.)

Unfortunately, they represent a terrible value for the money. I recommend using them only where placement is more important than quality, since their tiny size and distinctive styling makes them excellent for fitting into an existing room without disturbing the decour. The sound is really a bit lackluster, with shallow bass and nothing particular special above it. It'll certainly do the job, but certainly shouldn't command the price point that it does. Compare this system with the Paradigm Titans and the Energy Take 5's and make an honest assessment.

By the way, do know why you never see any reviews of Bose speakers in most major magazines? Almost all magazines rely almost entirely on advertising revenue (subscribers account for a very small percentage of their income) and Bose is a *huge* advertiser, with multiple full-page ads in almost every major magazine.

So, let's say for the sake of argument that these magazines tried out the Bose stuff and didn't like it. How can they publish an article saying this, and thus piss off one of their biggest customers? On the other hand, they can't lie and print a *good* review, because their credibility would be be shot and they need the circulation in order to attract the advertisers.

The solution? Don't post a review at all.

Sure, this is speculation, but from now on check your favorite magazine for any statements regarding Bose. You'll find that they either avoid talking about Bose, or if they do mention Bose, they do so in an incredibly neutral tone, avoiding mentioning anything to do with their quality.

One thing that I know *did* happen. Bose once sued Consumer Reports for posting a bad review ... and won! Consumer Reports reported that the sound for the 901's "tended to drift around the room". (I believe this is an accurate quote, but treat as a paraphrase.) Bose's lawyers argued that the sound only drifted along the *front wall* and that the "experts" at CR should have been more specific about this in their magazine. Bose won, if you can believe it.

Now, I did buy these speakers when I got out of grad school. In my defense, at the time there were no similar products to compete (3 matching fronts) that I knew of. I have since relegated this system to my bedroom and have a set of Atlantic Technology speakers in my main room. I am *much* happier now. :-)

Weakness:

Sound Quality

I had the chance to hear these at a friends house recently, and was really sadenned by how poor sounding they were. Very harsh, a recessed midrange, and one note midbass with no bottom end. Quite frankly, based on what I remember hearing the Bose 201 & 301 were far better speakers for less money. I would pass on these at anything over $50. Paradigm, Definitive Technologies, and Boston Acoustics, all offer much better products at lower prices. Are the Bose AM-7s the worst speaker I have ever heard, no. They are a very poor product for the price however.

Strength:

The sats are tiny, the "sub" can be out of sight!

Weakness:

The tiny, plastic, colored, dynamic depraved, cheap sats and the boomy, one notey band-pass bass module are NOT MUSICAL.
Its all marketing and poor sound.

This system like all acoustic mess speakers sell because of clever marketing. The sound will please those who never even aproached good audio gear and like tiny sats with a boomy sub(read bass module).

These are "speakers" sound inferior to even some mass market El Cheapo units!

If you want good sond and dont want to spend a fortune go listen to PSB,Paradigm,Monitor Audio and even Klipsch.Yes the cheapest Klipsch sound better! And cost way less.

Be alert and audition other brands.A 1/5 score was never so justified as here! And its not a joke.

WARNING!!!
If you are not an ardent BOSE proponent, and you have posted a negative review of a bose product, you may be subjected to the wrath of an individual who goes by the moniker "Mr. Bose". He will come to you in stealth, with a foul tongue and an equally lacking vocabulary totally void of any degree of usefull coherency. This person is evidently either retarted or perhaps a crack adict.

Mr. BOSE: We know your out there, however your cowardice is evident in the fact that you don't give anyone the opportunity to respond to you maniacal ravings. This will not be tolerated. At least When I write a to reviewer I give them a chance to retort. Mr. Bose, it is well that you are devoted to your cause, nevertheless, it is unfortunate that you lack the intelligence to convey your ignorant beliefs. It is advisable that you consult a dictionary which, just in case you weren't aware, is a book which may bestow upon you startling revalations about the mechanics of intelligent expression. I await your response.
