Strength:

Boston CR9's sound great. Boston makes great speakers. Very clear and bright. Vocals are great.

Weakness:

Low bass is not great, but is as good or better than anything in the price range. You want massive bass, add a powered subwoofer. I did.

I looked at speakers for a year. I found myself keep coming back to the Bostons. Even speakers several hundred dollars more weren't as good. I have used these at various gathering s and have had several people comment how great they sound. Even women have asked me about them. My nephew listened to Bush and said he had just heard them in concert a month before, and these sounded just like they did. Take your time, bring in a couple of your CD's and listen. Compare Bostons to your favorites. You will find yourself coming back to them too.
PS They don't go on sale much so expect to pay list or very close.

Strength:

Imaging is flawless. Tight. Had them almost four years now, and cranked my Denon AVR2700 up to +15 dB with no problems whatsoever, and not only that, they sound beautiful at normal levels as well. These are durable, well made speakers with excellent clarity of sound.

Weakness:

Low frequencies lack the thumpiness of less accurate speakers, which some may consider a low point, but an NHT SubOne more than makes up for this ;->

If you're looking for exceptional stand-alone speakers and don't mind missing the thumpy (is this a word?) lows, pick these up. They reproduce accurately as all heck, and for the price, are an excellent value. Of course, if you are buying them as part of a home entertainemnt / home theater system, you will need a good subwoofer to provide the low frequency effects, as these produce very little LFE vibration that I can feel.

Well balanced

Boston's are just flat out performers. These speakers are very well balanced. The music is very warm, but yet detailed. Thats a hard combination to have, yet Boston did it. Yes there are better Bookshelfs, but none for that price.

Strength:

These are well built, heavy speakers, built with solid materials, they should last forever if treated properly; and the sound - is superb!

Weakness:

None.

These are awesome speakers, period. I can't believe some of the other reviewers here saying that the bass is lacking! These speakers freq. response is from 42-20K! Have you compared these to other speakers in this price range? Of course you'll want a subwoofer with these speakers, you will with most bookshelf speakers. I've owned these for 5 years and absolutely love them. They have a gorgeous sound and reproduce the source material wonderfully. They are fantastic imaging speakers, with great clarity and detail. They will bring out details in the music you have never heard before. CR9s are perfect for Home Theater as well. I compared these to more expensive Klipshe speakers, and preferred the CR9s without question. You will be hard pressed to find a better speaker at this price.

Strength:

Deep sounstage, smooth midrange.

Weakness:

None.

If you are auditioning speakers for a smaller room or a medium sized main monitor, you owe it to yourself to give these a listen. I've had mine for two years and can't believe I "stole" them for a mere $319. Mine are combined with an Energy EPS-12 powered sub and an old Yamaha integrated amp with a Denon CD, and they sound like a rich and smooth chocolate malt. No flaws whatsoever. If you purchase the CR9s, you won't regret it. Thanks, Boston.

I've owned the Boston CR-9s for about a year and a half now and they're great speakers, make no mistake. Extremely well made and robust, you cannot fault the build quality. They offer superb clarity and a very neutral sound. Bass is considerable and tight, not boomy. However... they must be matched carefully with source/amps. To wit... If I had to do it over again I would possibly choose the B&W 602s over the Boston CR9s, but only because I've matched the Bostons with Rotel equipment which is also characterised by its neutrality and clarity. Therefore, to get a warmer, rounder sound, the B&Ws may be a better match. But I have tiled floors in the room and nothing covering the walls so that may be influencing the sound. I would definitely rate these as excellent bookshelf speakers, but ones that require a nice natural sounding cable as well as carpeting on the floor and curtains to take the bright edge off.

Strength:

Price. Fits well in a modest home theater setup.

Weakness:

It does everything a $400.00 speaker can be expected to do, but (for me) therein lies the problem.

I've had these speakers hooked up to a Denon home theater receiver for over three years now. It's a decent setup for a college apartment, but lately the CR-9's have become more and more fatiguing to listen to. Frequent visits to the local hifi shops have spoilt me, I'm afraid. As my ear matures, the Boston's highs get harsher, and the lack of LFE gets frustrating. I recently upgraded my cables with no real significant improvement.

My own personal preference dictates that $400.00 just isn't enough to spend for the sound I want, so I will be upgrading my entire system as shortly as possible after graduation. However if you must confine your search to a pair of speakers in this price range, you should probably give the B&W 602's and/or the Paradigm Studio 20's a listen.

I have the Boston CR-6's in the rear and the VR-10 center channel speaker. No subwoofer is used, but not because my system doesn't need one. I'm just a poor college kid right now.

Strength:

Smooth highs, and strong clean bass

Weakness:

Presence when compared to a better speaker.

The Boston CR-9s have smooth highs and a strong bass response. One can listen for hours without fatigue. I bought two pair of the CR-9s and one pair of the CR-7c for HT application. The 9's are a pleasant speaker and very efficent so they work well with smaller amps. At soundtrack they sounded very simular to much more expensive speakers. They are an excellent value in that price range, but they really can't compare in detail with most B&W speakers. What I hear in loss of detail in the midrange and highs. Acoustic instruments don't have the three dimensional image and detail that my old B&W DM4's easily produce. The detail is present, but somewhere behind the performers. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I love music and Hi-Fi equipment. In this price range of $350.00, the CR-9s are a very good speaker which is well made and attractive in appearance. It's weakness isn't easily discovered until one makes A-B comparisons with other well made speakers.
