Hello, my name is Garrett, and I, too, am a former Bose owner... I've only had my Micro 9000s for less than 48 hours, but already I can say without a doubt that they're phenomenally better than the Bose. The Bose sounded so bad that I thought there was something physically wrong with them. The BAs, however, are absolutely fantastic. Very clear, warm sound that just fills the room. I also looked at the Energy Take 5 system. Very good system, but a bit too bright-sounding for me. I'm very pleased with the Micro 9000.

Strength:

Excelent Audio Quality for the Price
Very well designed binding posts
Dipole surounds

Weakness:

150Hz Crossover for Sub instead of proper 80Hz
satilites/center freq. response bottoms out at 100Hz
no crossover control on sub
cabinet size is a little too small

Overall an excelent deal! These speakers outperformed all of the other speakers in this price range that I considered in stores. I would have prefered larger units (instead of looking like a little thing at the top of a pole), however the sound quality easilly made these units a better deal. The dipole surounds provide an excelent quality on DPL, DD and DTS tracks with my Onkyo TX-DS777 THX reciever. While not as good as proper THX speakers, these units cost a LOT less and provide very close performance. The speakers do a good job across their entire acoustic range and do everything from subtle nuances to loud explosions very well.

My only complaint with the units is the low frequency crossover. All THX recievers use a crossover at 80Hz for the sub pre-out which forced me to hook up the sub through the speaker level connections for the left and right channels which cuts down the seperation of the LFE channel in DD and DTS audio and takes away some degree of control. It also forced me to use the lower quality crossover in the speakers instead of the better THX one inside of the reciever.

Eventually I'll get a THX set, but I'm going to have to wait until funds provide! In the meantime this is an exclent set of speakers that provide unparalleled sound quality in their price bracket. All of the problems are tied to the THX setup of my reciever and really don't apply to non-THX recievers.

That's a great system for under $1,000. It's my first HT system ever used, but I spend a lot of time to compare with other systems for my budget. I can't go any where else after I found this one. It's also my first time to read Audioreview to get other's opinion today (I don't want others influence for my own judgement) and it's not surprised a lot of people like it. I'm using Yamaha 595A and
I have to say, they are a perfect combination.

I currently am going shopping for speakers in Moscow and I was browsing stores in this massive electronics market and came upon this one store that had alot of speakers so naturaly I walked in to see what they had. The first thing that hit me was the music playing, it sounded like it was everywhere and was so clear, I thought it was one of the huge expensive speakers playing. So I went to the salesman and asked in my bad russian which speaker was playing the music. He led me to two really small speaker satelites that were on stands and I was blown away because they sounded like 10,000 bucks worth of sound when in fact they were only around 7000 roubles (280 bucks) for the whole system. I plan to go back and buy those for sure today and will post another review when I get my Pioneer Elite VSX-26TX receiver and Pioneer DV-525 DVD player hooked up to it in my home. The best sounding system I have ever heard so far, a no-brainer to buy! GET 'EM!

I wanted to thank those who came before me and posted such positive reviews on this system. I was planning on buying the Bose AM-15's (I know, I know...), but after reading their reviews and the reveiws of the Micro System 9000 I thought I should at least compare these two side by side. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about audio, but I know what I like. The 9000 had a much fuller, warmer sound, and was also very crisp and clear. The Bose AM-15's sounded harsh and strained, not to mention they were about $300 more. Anyway, I bought the Micro System 9000 for $1000 from Audio King - full 6 speaker system - what a deal!!! My family and I are now thoroughly enjoying our home theater. Thank you Audio Review and thank you Boston Acoustics.

Strength:

Outstanding front three (Left, right and center). Superb clarity and crispness in the highs and mids. Great imaging and power handling for micros. No distortion at high volume. Sounds great with both home theater and music. Best in the market for the price.

Weakness:

Sub works great for movies, is punchy for music but stuggles a little at very high levels (as you would expect from a 8"/75W speaker). Rear dipole speakers seem cheap, and would be more effective in small rooms, but I was very surprized by the spacious surround sound they produced. Check out the version II system where they have upgraded the sub and rear speakers.

Let me start by stressing that research and testing is imperative when it comes to selecting a speaker system. Take samples of the music you like, and the movies you like, to the stores and ask them to power the system with an amp that is close to the same spec as your own. If you can get a home trial then do it. Also, some companies offer 30 day money back guarantee, which is time consuming way to test, but also worthwhile if how the system is going to sound in your place is important.

I listened to many systems and I kept coming back to the BA´s. The sweet front 3 speakers just make the system sound amazing. Boston have done things a little differently by matching their best micros at the front with slightly lower end sub and rears to hit the price point. Remember, most of the sound in movies, and all of the sounds in music, come from the front speakers. This system outperformed all others I listened to.

I home trialed a Polk RM6600 from Crutchfield. At first I thought it was great, but my favorite music just didn´t sound as clear in the highs as my car system, and this bothered me. However, the 10" sub was mindblowing... actually overpowered the satellites at times during movies. I tested it side by side with the BA´s and I couldn´t believe the difference - needless to say, the Polks were sent packing.

At the time I purchased this system, it was in my opinion the best on the market for $1000. Forget Bose, there are much better systems for less money. Just remember to shop around and listen to everything (side by side if you can). Playing your favorite music tells you a lot about the speaker quality. An excellent system that won´t disappoint!

Strength:

Outstanding audio--music and home theater

Weakness:

Haven't found any in three years!

I've managed to piece together the equivalent of a BA Micro 9000 system by judiciously picking up the needed parts over the course of the past three years. The very fact that I was able to do this within the construct of a company's product line says a lot about the company, its engineering and its model/pricing philosophy.

I originally purchased the BA Micro90 Micro Reference Series system as an upgrade from 10-year old Bose AM-5s (still a good sounding system themselves, but no match for the BAs) when I was upgrading my home system from Dolby Pro Logic to Dolby Digital in 1998. There was a definite lack of deep bass (below 35 Hz) with the Micro 90pv powered subwoofer due to its having only an 8-inch driver and a 75-watt amplifier. I augmented the bass with a JBL TLX PS12 subwoofer and moved on. While I initially retained my Bose V-100 Series surround speakers, the difference in timbre (BA front to Bose surround) and the V-100’s power handling limitations led me to the BA VRS surrounds. I also retained the Bose VCS-10 for the center channel, as I liked its low profile on top of my Sony television. This configuration lasted until this past December when I listened to the complete BA Micro 9000 system at the local audio store and was blown away by the full package. By then, the only thing missing was a BA center channel, so I ordered the Micro 90cII and replaced the last Bose component. WOW, what a difference! This speaker tied the whole system together and brought the thing to life. Having two 3.5-inch drivers along with a 1-inch dome tweeter (the exact same drivers as in the three-year old Micro 90x satellites!) made the whole front end's sound field seamless. Now, as an object pans from side to side on the screen, the sound moves with it with no noticeable transitions. With the system finally complete (well, OK, I am drooling over a PV1000 that might find its way home with me soon), I can sit back and just relish the rich sound produced by my three-year old system and know that I still have one of the best sounding systems on the market

What’s the point of all this rambling? Well, for starters, Boston Acoustics must be commended for designing one of the best sounding satellite systems on the market today—let alone three years ago! Secondly, they need to be lauded and applauded for sticking with a good design for three plus years and NOT succumbing to the marketeers and offering a “new” line (and worse yet, discontinuing an awesome existing line!) just for the sake of introducing a “new and improved” product! My hat’s off to Boston Acoustics and their engineers. I’ve always liked their motto; “We make what people want to listen to.” That and the fact that they can design a system with this kind of staying power places them a notch above the rest of the loudspeaker manufacturers and wannabes. Keep up the great work!

Boston Acoustics home theater 9000 II is the best home theater system for under 1000 dollars.there isn't anything that compares to these speakers at this price range, the sound is incredibly clean and the highs are crisp, the 10 inch sub is powerful,it fills my listening area with clean and deep bass.I use this system for music and home theater and I am very happy with the performance in both. All of you who are in the market for a new home theater system go to your nearest Boston Acoustics retailer and listen to this system, you will love it like I do....and please do not buy any Bose system before auditioning the BA 9000 II,while the Bose sound just ok for home theater they sound really awful for music. BOSTON ACOUSTICS ROCKS!!!!

Build quality, great sub, In silver to match my Sony TV

Just got the New 9000 II system for my bedroom and it is even better than the old one. It comes with a 10" sub and more power than the old 9000's 8" sub. The store still had the old 9000 to compare to the new one and the new sub pounds! The new system also has different rear speakers, they no longer come with the dipoles. The new rears look like the front speakers but are made out of plastic instead of Aluminum. They seem to work better with my Denon reciver in the 5 channel stereo mode. I read the reviews below and they are right, I am glad I did not buy the Bose. The one guy that like the Bose, well I went to Fry's and they do not even carry Boston Acoustics and never have so you must have heard something else. Way to go Boston, a better system at the same price!

Size, Price, Clarity

Weakness:

Included wall mounts are very basic and kinda tough to work with, especially for the front main speakers.

If you are looking for a quality and great sounding speaker setup for your home theater system at a decent price, look no further. I'm no audiophile, but I am particularly picky about the clarity of my sound system. After listening to several different Bose, Eclipshe (sp?), Energy, and Bostons, I kept coming back to 2 Boston systems... the Micro 10k, and the Micro 9k. After listeniong to those 2 again a few times with the same audio track, it was VERY close, but the 10k did have a SLIGHT edge over the 9k, but it was VERY minimal, and the difference between spending $1000 and $2000 (once you add a sub to the 10k) was just simply nowhere near being there for me to justify the price difference. I've mainly only used the speakers so far for movie viewing, and they are fabulous! I can only say though, when buying speakers, go listen, listen, and listen some more, to MANY different brands to see what YOU like.

And yes, Good Guys can play ball with pricing... dont believe them if they say they cannot. You should be quite capable of scoring at around 10% off. I bought nearly my entire home theater package from them, and ended up coming out at about a total of %19 off the grand total. This was on a purchase of about $5500 - Gotta love the 36" Sony Wega XBR450. =)
