Strength:

VR tweeter, great bass response for small oval woofers, crisp and separated mids

Weakness:

NA

Extremely musical, open speakers for their size! Let me start by saying that I am a musician, both a pianist and vocalist, so I am fairly well acquainted with listening to music for faults and coloration. This pair of Boston towers made my CD collection come alive. You''d be surprised at the bass response from the single oval-shaped woofer in each tower module. Not only great for stereo music, but also work very well in my home theater setup coupled with a Boston VR-10 center channel which is very well acoustically matched. The VR tweeter is incredible and I don''t know why others claim they get harsh at high volumes. In my opinion, I haven''t heard clearer, less fatigueing highs from a speaker at double its price level. Do yourself a big favor and get a pair of these if you can. You can always add a separate sub to fill out the bass and they look great without being too large!

Strength:

Nice highs and mid-range. Pretty efficent, and good contempary look.

Weakness:

Tweeters become "harse" at loud volumes

First let me say that for the money these things rock. There is hardly a speaker on the market at the price point of these guys that sound as great as they do. Being that I work in the great world of "Home Audio Retail", I can easily say that anyone looking for a great pair of towers for a "first home theater" or replacing bookshelf speakers, these are definitly a good investment.

Strength:

Outstanding clarity and sound for both music and home theatre.

Unbeatable sound for the money. I have the VR940 with the VR10 Center, Yamaha Sub and MTX In-Wall Rear Channel Speakers. The sound integration with the VR10 is outstanding and the overall sound and clarity is great. You will not find a better sounding front set-up for the money. The VR940 will require a small amplified sub to help with the low end. My sub is very old and only has 75 watts and with adjustments plended great with the VR940.

The Eagles "When Hell Freezes Over" on DVD (Digital DTS Sound)will blow you away with the acoustical sound from this DVD.

Strength:

Smooth clean sound. Doesn't color music at all. Wonderful mids, great for jazz and acoustic music.

Weakness:

Don't like the caps, and sock grill style, but considering their sound I don't care

Far and away the best speaker in this price range that I auditioned. Simply superb clarity and realism with all kinds of music, but these speakers excel with acoustic and jazz. Nice sharp mids, and clear clean highs w/o sounding harsh at all. Tight bass, but in a large or open room you'll need a sub.
I have shifted mine to the back to run as surrounds, and purchased the VR965 (has powered subs) for the mains. This combination may not yield the best placement of speakers, but the timbre matching creates a very transparent sound, and with my NAD receiver in EARS mode, music fills the entire room without sounding directional or unbalanced. I am running the VR940s at -3dB now as they are much closer to the listening positon, and I am very pleased. I haven't put them to the test yet with any real demanding 5.1 DVD, but I am sure they'll be up to it.
These speakers are wonderful, and I absolutely love them. The entire VR line (940, 950, 965, and 975) is well worth looking into, and should have a size and price point to meet every need and budget. Do yourself a favor, and go listen to some Bostons before you buy!

Strength:

Looks (except the 3in. at the bottom), slim, I like the sock + endcap style.

Weakness:

The tweeter bridge would crunch if the speaker fell on it's face. Bass response (not significant, set it to small anyway). They ruined the beautiful design by not putting another endcap on the bottom, they put a cheesy looking foot that makes people think it's a cheap speaker when it really isn't.

These aren't that great speakers for movies. If you are buying music speakers, I'd get these (or NHT 1.5 w/ stand). The speakers just don't have a very believable, spacious sound for movies. They aren't incredibly efficient either, so get a decent receiver.

My recommendation is to check the ads for a good set of used speakers, you can get them cheap. Mine were <$1200 for all, if new the sub or front pair alone would be $1k.

If your also looking for a receiver, look into Onkyo.

My system:

Panasonic TV Not good. Will get HDTV when it's under $2k for a 40in. widescreen
Hitachi HiFi VCR Old (7yrs.), the best VCR I've used
Sony DVP-S360 DVD It will serve just about everyone's needs
Onkyo 575X Receiver Even though it says 70w, it is great, better looks than Denon and the remote is reason enough to buy it
Definitive Technology BP10 front bipoles
Def. Tech. C 1000B center (looks bad, sounds good, too big speaker for the performance)
Def. Tech. BP2X surround bipoles (If you're getting surround, do yourself a favor and put a pair of bipoles on the BACK walls)
Def. Tech. PowerField 1500 sub (replaced by 1500TL+ but this one's black and not as powerful, the TL+ is cheaper too!)

Strength:

Excellent sound and price.

Excellent sound quality and range for a low cost speaker. I looked at several models from paradigm, kipsch, AR, BIC and for the money and pure performance of the 940's, couldn't pass them. Looked at the 950's and couldn't tell a whole lot of difference between the two. The only suggestion I would make it to pair the 940's with the PVR600 sub for a truely amazing performance for DVD's and music. BA makes some of the best speakers on earth and I believe they should be proud of the 940's

Bass response, imaging, and style

Weakness:

Lynfield tweeter a little on the bright side

Excellent speaker, bought them as closeout at local stereo store for 40% of retail. Combined with the VR12 center channel they make a strong front soundstage that does home theatre justice.

A month ago I starte4d out on my quest to just buy some average Yamaha speakers. After spending a few hundred... a long story short I was hooked I wanted something great.

I came across the 940's they were the smoothest pair of speakers that I've ever heard. I love-em!!!

set-up

Boston's VR940's in the rear and front with the VR-10 as a center.

The VR-10 is the best match for the set, exceptional balance.

Still looking for a receiver, I am auditioning the Dennon Avr-3300,
not sure if I will keep maybe the Sherwood 945.

Strength:

Great for movies with DD and DTS. Size makes them easy to fit anywhere. Very clear and actually have some bass!

Weakness:

They can be a little harsh at high volumes. For music, they are too clear.

I bought the pair brand new for an amazing price of $300. At this price I would have been insane to pass on them. It was either these or Polk Audio. I couldn't get a deal on the Polks so my decision was made. When I first listened to them, I was dissapointed. I had had 12inch Cerwins and was used to the bass they produced and the loudness they exhibited. After all, they were loudspeakers. Then I tried them with Dolby Digital and DTS and was thoroughly impressed. I also have a BA center, two Infinity references for rears, and a 8inch infinity sub. I bought a Yamaha RXV596 to run it all. Overall, its not an overpowering system, but it is my first home theatre experience and I'm in heaven. My only complaint about the BA's is that when I play music and turn the volume up to high levels, the highs are too high. I may get some DCM's and run them as stereo speakers and the BA's as surround only. Having had the Cerwins, I like to loud unrefined sound when I blast Megadeth or Billy Idol. Yes I said Billy Idol. I recommend these babies, but keep in mind they won't rock the house. They will bring amazing clarity to your home theatre system.
