Strength:
Very clean trebble, and the design is thin and different than most speakers i seen.
Weakness:
Distortion on the sub at high level, a little weak on the midrange compared to Infinity Oveture 2 but. Sounds good for music, but for movies i thought KLipsch were better. This speaker sounds very good for music that have string instruments, especially listening to the Eagles in DTS. For Movie i listened to Klipsch and they sound better and handle high volume more better w/o distortions. Similar Products Used: Klipsch, Infinity, Energy |

Strength:
Warm sound, sounds great at low levels, efficient use of space
Weakness:
Hard to handle bue to exposed components covered by cloth, weighs over 50 pounds Thought to look up this model (BA960) on the net 'after' I purchased them! The salesman, a younger gentleman (Mike) ran me through the paces with Klipsch, et al and after about 20 minutes I was not really thrilled with anything that I was hearing. (Originally I was looking at something in the $300 to $400 price range I might mention.)Well, I started to describe my musical interests and Mike said he had a set of speakers at home that may work on what I'm interested in and they were in another room. We were able to key in on different aspects of what we each liked (style, audio spectrum, spl, etc) and he turned me on to the BA960'S. |

Strength:
incredible sound, uncanny detail. slim profile for tiny footprint
Weakness:
cloth exterior and weight make it hard to move around. lose the quality when the sound is cranked i walked into a myer-emco just to look around, but then saw these gems on sale for $700. i could not walk away from this sound. i have it hooked up to a pioner vsx-d608 reciever, and boy do my neighbors hate me :) the detail they provided was like taking some windex to my cds, i could hear EVERYTHING. and the bass is more then ample for lil apt, esp for movies. the soundstage is accurate and full. but they seem to take on a different personality when u turn it up high. the sound is stressed and looses depth. |

Strength:
Quality of sound for the money - awesome.
Weakness:
Packing materials - I can see that, if they got roughed up in shipping, the speakers could suffer. Also, the tacky plastic feet -- a speaker that sounds this good deserves better. Recently purchased a pair of VR-965s after auditioning similar (and in some cases, much more expensive) speakers from NHT, Polk, Klipsch, Mirage and several other brands. The 965's beat them all up to around the $2,000 price range. Considering I got the 965s for $900, it was kind of a "no brainer". |

Strength:
Clean, crisp sound, covering the full range sound. Stereo separation. Sleek, thin design; takes up little space. Attractive.
Weakness:
None that I have found. At 38, I thought it was time to finally buy some higher end speaker. I found these at a dealer for $500 a pair,on sale. After spending an hour or more in a sound room listening to various CDs I brought and u-571 on DVD, I was impressed enough to get them. Like other reviewers, I thought they sounded better at home! I am pleased with the way they sound regardless of what I am listening to. The highs are crisp and the lows are great with or without a seperate sub (I had one already). The other thing is that the stereo separation is great, regardless of how close to center you sit. I could go on and on about how good these are, but listening to them does them the justice they deserve. I am very pleased with these speakers. well, i cant believe it. i had a similar problem to kent. the first pair of 960s i got the left subwoofer hummed-even without any source sound. i reset the fuse and it stopped-for a little while. they went back. the 2nd pair-the midrange was almost buzzing whenever i played certain music-particularly female vocalists like celine dion and shiana twain. they went back. this 3rd pair the mid range is still acting wierd. its almost as if theres no crossover so when i turn up the volume the midrange reaches full extension or somthing. ive tried EVERYTHING: new moster 12 ga. cable, new room w/ different electric outlet, even a new receiver-the yam 793 and 995. so, the 3rd pair will, once again, go back.!!! dont get me wrong i LOVE their sound. its warm, smooth, and plenty or bass (for not having a separate sub). i have no idea whats up but i think i get me a DIFFERENT KIND....maybe def pro 400? |

Overall, a pretty good speaker. Retails for about 499 a speaker; I got mine on sale for about 450 a pop. I compared a set of Kef, Klipsch, Energy and Defintive Technology speaker of equivalent price with these speakers. I prefered the sounds of the Bostons in Home Theater the best, though I thought the KEF Q series speakers were a little stronger on the music side of things (a little warmer sound.) However, the built in subs make them difficult to touch in the price range, and they really shine on AC-3 movies. I saved the expense and space required for an additional sub for now (but I WILL get one later...) |

I recently purchased the VR-960's and am very pleased with their performance. I auditioned them against Klipsch and Paradigm speakers and chose the Boston's based on the strength of their amazing clarity and prior experience (I have owned a pair of T-830's previously). Let me say that the products from Klipsch and Paradigm also sounded excellent, and I'm sure there are many other maufacturers who produce great sounding speakers. Each speaker has it's own personality so to speak so I believe there is not a "best" speaker, or even a consensus top ten. Trust your own ears, take cd's that you enjoy when auditioning speakers and based on performance and budget make your decision. I paid $850 for my pair which were demo's. I can listen to them for hours without becoming fatigued, and they reproduce the music I play accurately and without "coloring" it, which is the Boston's stated goal. They have acheived it. Also please note the first review is for the VR-970 not the 960. |

I listen to a lot of heavy metal (like Metallica, Megadeth, etc.) The music I listen to has lots of Guitar. Thus needing a lot of midrange. I bought the 960's and found that they sounded great for blues, rock, and jazz. But as for the metal test, I tried playing some Metallica - Master of Puppets. The lows and the extreme highs sounded good, but the midrange was lacking big time! I could not believe how lacking they were. I then stepped up to the 970s. They sounded a lot better but still had the same problem. Boston Acoustics recognized this problem(preference) on the phone and stated they will soon be coming out with a new version of the 960 and 970. I am still waiting and looking. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. |

I purchased a pair of VR960's last week and I am very pleased with these speakers. I like how they transition from midrange to subwoofer so nicely. I like how the speaker controls the bass so as not to drown out the vocals when more bass is applied. I get plenty of bass for music and movies with the sub turned a 1/4 of the way up. That is all you need, that is how powerful these puppies are. I think this is the best bang for your buck in a HT tower speaker. And the integrated powered subs are great so you don't have that stand alone sub sitting in a corner somewhere all by itself. My wife really liked the idea of the integrated sub so she could decorate with out having to deal with the extra sub. As many of you know the W.A.F.(Wife Acceptance Factor) is 99% of the decision process when selecting home audio equipment. Unless your single, then get whatever the hell you want! |
