NONE. Well, I must say, I did get a chance to listen to a pair, in FL, before I found a mint pair in CA. So, I purchase them. while listen to the speakers, I've notice the bass, was not there, and fact it was getting weaker... so, I pop off the grill and found the bass driver needed to be recone. So, I contact Regnar, whom are the Dahlquist Company. They recommended, for me to upgrade the Crossover, and Wire, and have both Bass Drivers, recone. So, I did a extra $600.00 or so. then once I received back the drivers, I took a can of Black Hole Spray, and Spray in side the box for the woofer. this would seal it tight, and make the bass even tighter. had to solder the new wiring harness, to the crossover. Then came the fun part... the break in period... for about 2 days, I let play very very low, Then the test. Well, I was shock, to have heard what I thought I heard, The sound was light and with alot air and openess, sound stage was hugh and deep... I had to close my mouth twice.. still could not believe it, I re-visted, the friend whom had the orginal pair of DQ-10's, and listen to the same piece of music, and said what a major difference. He was running Krell Amps, and Pre-Amp. I was using Pass Labs amps, and pre-amp.. The DQ-10's that I have which I call the MK III version, sound better than the orgianls this was very interesting... The bass line will hit very hard at 32 Hz. ( I used a sub woofer, and Xover, at 40 Hz, this works out very well... the voicals, are excellent. Similar Products Used: None. |

Strength:
high end and midrange. nice and bulky, louder than anything for the price.
Weakness:
bass sucks! must have a good sub with these to do them justice. Alright, my Dad bought the DQ-10s in 1975 and ahs kept them until now. He ran them on 2 Crown 300As, which is 300 watts mono for each speaker. He also ran a DQ-1 on a Crown 300. My mom wanted to get rid of them because they were too big, i convinced my dad to send them to Regnar/Dahquist where we spent over $1000 totally revamping them. I took them because my Dad got a pair of System Audio shelf speaker, which are amaing for what they are...any how, i took the DQ-10s and put them in my room and dan them off of an Adcom 1500 (?) wish is 150watts per channel. they sound better than ever!!! I love them to death and will never get rid of them. The high end is the best i have ever heard, even better than some Meridian DSP5000 speakers, even though it is hard to compare. I use my dads original Dahlquist cross over along with the DQ-1 powered by a Crown 300A (I am getting a new mono block soon). Basically, dont sell them, ge them refurbished by Regnar/Dahlquist. Wide cabinet, lean low bass ,power hungry, need a minimun of 150 watt amp. DQ 10,s a great foundation of technology, and ready to enjoy or modd to your liking: Tips: Replace the old woof with a more effecient design. A smaller 8 inch with a reduction ring made of wood, works wonders in the bass department. Replace caps wire and sand resistors with upgraded parts.Replace fiberglass stuffing with poly-dacron and wool blend.(Experiment with amt.) Replace piezos with ribbons.Dope metal brackets and driver basket with mortite.Re-inforce stands and spike with points.(speaker hight tip: 44 inches to top of frame, tweeters on the inside with cabs towed in a bit and 3to4 ft. apart. Enjoy cause they are fun and deserve high praise.Thank you John for a master piece. Similar Products Used: Carver Ribbons, Newform Research, Advents Home-Brew's |

Power hungry I agree with the guy below this article. The person who gave the DQ-10's a poor review was probably listening to a pair that needed work. After 23 years mine did too. I called the experts @ regnar / dahlquist: www.regnar.com (for those people who want to know). I upgraded them, had the woofers, and mid-bass rebuilt - woo wee - I could not believe my ears. I don't think I ever heard them sound so good. I was so happy I called them and purchased the regnar center channel and powered sub. - as I expected those kicked butt too! Best money I've spent in years - just like the DQ-10's way back when. I must sum this up by saying look at all of the great reviews this model has under it's belt. If you have a few bad ones -that's OK - not everyone has the same opinion or ears! Similar Products Used: ADS , martin Logan |

Sound stage, imaging. I almost forgot what these two sounded like. Pity the poor fool who wrote that last review. I just fixed my woofers today after having them sit in my basement for six years. In those six years I've moved on to home theater and didn't realize until tonite that I was trying to enjoy two channel like I used to. I've wasted six years of listening enjoyment by not getting them fixed sooner. The last time I got goose bumps was listening to Thiel CS6's at my brother-in-law's, also a former DQ-10 owner and the one who turned me on to them 26 yr's ago. Almost sold them once unfixed for $100. I'm never getting rid of them unless they truely die. I've only listened to 1 CD so far, Martin Taylor - Kiss and Tell, an excellent CD to test with and enjoy. The 10's the last listener was auditioning must have had the tweter fuses blown. There is no way that any in shape 10's will fail in this category. Snare drums just snap, cimbels ring, reeds vibrate. Close your eyes and you can see the hammer hitting strings in a piano. What I'm discribing is on a CD who's primary artist is an acoustic guitarist. The string playing done by Martin on an acoustic guitar is a thing of beauty. You literially feel his hands going up and down the guitar neck. I've listened to this CD many, many times on my current speakers Mirage OM7's, which I thought I was happy with until tonite. Things popped out and darn near ran over me that I had never heard before. The last song had faint talking in the background that I've NEVER heard before. So, I'm back in the saddle again, two channel that is, and I can't wait until tomorrow. The only thing mentioned in the prior post that's accurate is low bass. Low bass has always been a weak point and it's the only waek point in my book. By the way, what does flabby mean, why is heavy a weakness, and large is the design. If you see them for sale and the're in good shape buy them if you love music. |

Strength:
incredible soundstage...both in depth and transparency...awesome imaging qualities
Weakness:
flabby, slow 25yr old bass...power hungry large design...rolled off highs foam surrounds,,,complex crossover,,,heavy! I auditioned these at a local dealer with the intent of buying them. However, after much trepidation I decided to pass. I found it difficult to pay $5oo for technology that is almost 30 years old. This is not say that didn't do some things right. Imaging and soundstage depth were very favorable. THe real weaknesses were in the bass response and extreme highs categories. Bass drivers are the same cheap paper cones found in the Advent Classics...not a good thing. THe highs appeared muted and rolled off... which is the often the case with older speakers. I do feel that for the money there are better choices such as the Maggie MMG and the Vandersteen 1b or 1C. These Maggies have better high end definition while the Vandies have very good bass extension. BOth of these are very transparent...with the Vandies offering a little more depth of soundstage. Both of these would be about the same price...the Maggies new...the Vandies used. Since the dq-10s are "vintage" speakers prices seem to be soaring rapidly...anything over $3-400 is extremely inflated...they sold a ton of these back in the day! I have heard of people spending over a grand to have them refurbished...are you kidding me? Similar Products Used: maggie mmg, vandy 1c,spica, meadowlark |

Large units ! Several DQ 10 reviews make the same comment regarding power requirements. I have done many power amplifier auditions with this speaker. Total watt output is not the issue with the DQ-10. Their rated efficiency is approximately 87dB. This is relatively inefficient but not the worst you will ever encounter by far. The real culprit is the current capability of the power amplifier. The more current an amp is capable of delivering the better the DQ-10 speakers will sound. I have auditioned the Carver M-500t (251w/channel), a Krell (200W/channel), a Yamaha (70W/Channel), several SAE amps (100-200 W/channel), and finally, an Aragon 8008BB (200w/channel) Because the Aragon has the highest energy storage capability (measured in microfarads), this amp really sounds the best on the DQ-10. Satisfy yourself and bring your speakers to a high end stereo store and do the demonstrations. While it sounds like a lot of work, you will be rewarded with superior sound. One small note regarding Aragon. The new line of Aragon power amps does not have the same internals as models just one or two years ago. You may find the used rack is the best place to start for power amps. I have owned DQ-10 speakers for many years. There are no finer speakers for imaging and overall sound definition. In view of the relatively low price they are getting in the used market these things are a fantastic bargain. You will not be disappointed with them provided you address the power amp issue. Remember, total watts is NOT the solution. Rather, it is a large transformer and extensive power storage capability (capacitors). Similar Products Used: B&W |

Midrange and highs. Phase coherence
Weakness:
Extremely power hungry. I used a Bryston 4B to drive them back then. Quite large and our room sensitive. Base is not up to modern standards so a sub would be a definite necessity if the lowest octave is important. I first bought these in 1977 or 1978. Owned them till 1988. Unbelievable sound. Closest sound to an electrostatic that I had heard at the time. I replaced them with Thiel 2s which were faster and with a better upper midrange and base. They need enormous power. minimum is 200 watts per speaker. Sold them 10 years later for the same price that I bought them at. Similar Products Used: Thiel, Vandersteen, Apogee |

wide open soundstage, delivers more music than any box I''ve heard, and gives the Martin Logans a run, but the ML''s gave me listener fatigue. Fantastic with vocals, acoustic guitars.
Weakness:
need to use a sub when I don''t discipline myself to remember how music really comes from the instruments, not the movies. I am on my 3 rd pair of these babies! The first had to go of the marriage went. The second I did the crossover myself and they sound great! The 3rd pair I bought with replaced woofers, and am now beggin'' you DQ!) fans to help me and sell me two original woofs-any condition. Similar Products Used: Dahlquist DQ30i |
